I would try and maybe feed more often in the day? If you think it isn't working for you then go ahead. All sleep training involves SOME tears, but it could be more or less. We did a VERY gradual form of it, and I will outline it below.
So first you make sure he's drinking enough in the day and then decide a certain time during which you won't feed at night. So feed at 7pm, then a dream feed at 10, and then no feeds till 6 am. And then do whatever it takes to settle in that time. If it means, you put a hand on his back, and rub and pat then so be it. I suspect it will take a couple of weeks but you will see a difference. I did sleep train, but very very gently with minimal crying. First, I had a very set and very definite night routine (which we still have at 4). That was step 1.
Then step 2 was by staying there and not offering feeds, I reduced night feeds (although this was around 8 months). Again, hand on the back, rubbing and patting but not giving in. This was a REALLY big step.
Then as step 2, I would feed, then tuck him in and put a hand on his back till he fell asleep. If he screamed (which he did), then I would say 'night night. Big boys go to sleep now.' ad nauseum. About 6 weeks of this later, once he got the message that Mummy would be there but he needed to go to sleep, he would drift off, and I could remove my hand from his back half way through the process.
I did all this while co-sleeping. So I stopped feeding to sleep or cuddling to sleep but at the same time I co-slept.
Then at 1 year, we put his cot at the foot of our bed. Put him in there, and again, hand on back, 'big boys go to sleep in their cot.' First night he cried for 10 mins. Next night for 3 mins, all the while I stroked his back, and then never cried again.
Then around 18 months once he had been secure in his cot for 6 months, and also could fall asleep and stay asleep without breastfeeds I began a very slow gradual retreat. So by the time he was 2, I could tuck him in, and then leave him to it, and he would fall asleep by himself.
He stayed in our room till he was 3, and then moved to his own room (long story why), and is an excellent sleeper.
