To ask if you wear them how much your last pair of spectacles cost

I have worn glasses since I was 7, then contact lenses from 18 up until my 40s when I developed dry eyes and other problems which meant I had to give them up
Now at 51 am having to consider varifocals
I have quite a strong prescription so usually have the lenses made thinner, prefer rimless styles and due to allergies have to have either titanium or stainless steel frames
My current pair are also transitions as I found that cheaper last time than buying a second pair even with the offers around
I've tried 3 local independents along with vision express and specsavers
Cheapest quote I've had was around £400 dearest £600+
That was not for custom varifocals but not for the very basic ones either

I think they were £140? But then that was £60 from my contact lens scheme (i wear continuous wear monthlies which 'include' £60 towards glasses), £60 from nhs, and then i paid £20?
Specsavers

Klaptout · 02/03/2016 16:41

I've got several pairs of glasses I keep all the frame and send them along with the new prescription to www.framesavers.com/

PermaShattered · 02/03/2016 17:09

Have you thought abut buying them online? I discovered MisterSpex a couple of years ago - I found the ones I wanted in Boots (£350ish) and bought them (with lenses) for around £120 online. Easy to do and fantastic customer service.

SmashingBumpkins · 02/03/2016 17:15

Me:
Eye test: £10
Glasses: £70

DH:
Eye test: £10
Glasses: £240
Specially thinned lenses: £50

We both only wear them for watching TV so no special lenses or anything

serin · 02/03/2016 17:32

I'm like surburbanrhonda, Zeiss, high index lenses are the only real option for me. last ones were over £700 but did include a free pair.

I really envy those who can afford to match their specs to their outfits
.

slebmum1 · 02/03/2016 18:08

£60 for two pairs but should have been £140 I think - glasses direct. Love them.

I now don't care if DTs sit on them or I sit on them or the arms go wonky from lying down watching to in them.

Last pair cost me about £400!

slebmum1 · 02/03/2016 18:10

Oh and glasses direct do a free home trial for whoever asked up thread:)

BreakfastAtStephanies · 02/03/2016 18:16

Shotgun - I am an optometrist. You do need to be aware that your advice upthread about walking into an optometrist and getting an adjustment done on glasses purchased from the internet may not be quite valid. Some may refuse, others would do the adjustment but charge you for it. They would warn you of the charge in advance. Fitting and ongoing adjustment of the glasses for the lifetime of the glasses is part of the dispensing service which is included in the cost of the glasses purchased at the opticians.

Doobydoo · 02/03/2016 18:16

Eye test... nowt. Glasses 25 squid.Specsavers. and they did em in 2 hours as had lost mine. Fab service.

Girlwhowearsglasses · 02/03/2016 18:33

£400 frames
£250 lenses

Wear all day every day for three years (when they usually break)

Sounds a lot but I betcha most people spend much more on hair or make up in that time.

Right in middle of face so pretty much the centre of my identity.(hence name). I have astigmatism and the contact lenses for this are a bit thicker and make me want to scratch my eyes out.

FlibbertigibbetArmadillo · 02/03/2016 18:36

£90 at tesco for glasses and a free pair of prescription sun glasses, but I went when they were doing one of the 'double the value of your tesco vouchers' events so only handed over £45 of vouchers

billybear · 02/03/2016 18:59

ASDA my hubby has bio vocals or something used to spend a fortune at boots opticians then my dad went to asda wow great service fraction of the price

Nanny0gg · 02/03/2016 19:05

Also, because of my prescription I prefer to go to an optician where I will see the same person every time (much like my doctor).

There are too many things that can go wrong with my eyes for me to take any chances.

NotJimbo · 02/03/2016 22:09

Interesting to hear all the ASDA recommendations, I'll check them out next time.

My current glasses were £600, for Lindberg frames and 1.74 index lenses, for a strong -ve prescription with astigmatim. My last glasses were £700 for similar but rimless, but I always make my glasses last 4 - 5 years per pair. I buy them from a poncy local independent optician.

I've had prescription sunglasses bought on the internet for about £100 less than the local optician, but I was a little disappointed with them, the brown-black lenses I selected turned up more of a mad orange colour, and I needed the frames adjusted (local independent did this for free, even after I'd admitted buying them elsewhere!)

I'd be keen to pay less, and I've still the joys of varifocal to look forwards to!

ShotgunNotDoingThePans · 02/03/2016 22:11

Breakfast, I realise some opticians might refuse to adjust glasses not bought from themselves, but it's wasy to find one who will. I was doing this long before the interweb even existed and it was never refused then, nor has it been since actually, although one place made me sit in a corner while they 'got permission from the manager,' which amused me.
Whoever mentioned raybans: DH has several pairs bought online. You just need to make a note of the frame number and google it and you're off. I always take a photo.

ShotgunNotDoingThePans · 02/03/2016 22:14

Just remembered, I have rayban prescription sunglasses.

DaphneWhitethigh · 02/03/2016 22:19

I've got a pair of Lindbergh frames. Currently on their third set of lenses - god they're good.

TurnOffTheTv · 02/03/2016 22:52

Shotgun, what if they break them whilst adjusting?

Lauren83 · 02/03/2016 22:56

£570, terrible vision + Severe astigmatism

notimetoshop · 02/03/2016 23:21

mine were £450 from boots. the frames weren't that much, i think £120, it was almost all to do with the lenses. but are the £20 and £40 varifocals? even normal glasses for short sight have always been around £150-£200. (the varifocals did make enormous difference though)

ShotgunNotDoingThePans · 02/03/2016 23:32

If they break them whilst adjusting? Does that happen? I think in that case I'd be very disappointed and would politely ask that they replace them or at least refund the amount I paid. But if the specs were old and weak or fragile for some other reason, I imagijne they'd warn me of the possible outcome, in which case I'd decide whether to take the risk.

BreakfastAtStephanies · 02/03/2016 23:47

TurnOffTheTv - exactly. What if they break them ? They are not covered for breaking them, they are not liable, which is why some places would make Shotgun sign a disclaimer, and is probably what the staff had to consult the manager about.

BreakfastAtStephanies · 02/03/2016 23:51

No, they would not be obliged to replace them nor refund you. However you would have been fore-warned about this. They would not be expected to refund you since you did not make a purchase with them. There may be some leeway on this at the manager's discretion ( goodwill gesture ).

ShotgunNotDoingThePans · 03/03/2016 08:44

Well, it's never happened but nor has anyone ever forewarned about it. Now I have the full information, I can decide whether to continue buying cheaper glasses which have never been broken, or go back to spending the best part of £500 and always returning to the same optician on the off chance they might. Actually, as I said earlier, even when I bought from opticians I always walked into whatever branch I happened ro pass whilst out shopping - isn't that what everyone does? It's not always convenient to go back to the place you bought them from.

Hersetta427 · 03/03/2016 08:48

Mine were approx. £450.

Tom ford frames.
lightweight, extra clear lenses, anti mist, anti fog crap.
