To think the 'Disrespect NoBody' ad campaign is horribly sexist?

p4rmaviolet · 28/02/2016 21:22

Not sure if this has already been discussed but has anybody else seen the 'Disrespect NoBody' TV adverts that are supposedly raising awareness for healthy relationships and domestic violence?

Every single scenario in the advert is targeted at men abusing women whether it be physically or emotionally. Y'know because men are never victims?

Sorry peeps, i cant hang around - i have to get some sleep!
Good luck and have fun! 😘

" Reported " and not always proven

SpeakNoWords · 04/03/2016 00:25

I'm surprised you find the advert offensive. Most victims of DV are women and most perpetrators are men. As a victim of DV yourself, I'm surprised that you wouldn't support awareness being raised in the main victim group. There is an argument that an additional advert specifically targeting male victims of DV might be helpful, which is something that the government could decide if it considers that cost effective and worthwhile. Perhaps you could feed your disappointment back to them?

It's worth noting that the website accompanying this advert has a specific section for men, with links to helplines specifically for men.

limitedperiodonly · 04/03/2016 00:38

Is there some kind of MRA Name Generator?

You know like when IT tell you to use a password with a number in it and upper case and lower case and maybe a sign or two like 007mrBi61!!!

And you just think: 'I won't remember that. Can't I just use the name of my first pet, MrSnuffkins?'

Nixcos · 04/03/2016 03:10

Firstly OP was stating the advert was sexist for implying all domestic abuse comes from men, the website itself has links to the "Men's advice line".

Secondly domestic abuse is more than physical assault, its controlling your partners life and abusing them sexually.

Also around 40% of domestic violence is against men. Here is a report by the guardian on the subject. www.theguardian.com/society/2010/sep/05/men-victims-domestic-violence

You can turn this into an ugly "stop blaming women" argument when no one has said "this is all women's fault". Or you can acknowledge that domestic abuse is awful for anyone and highlighting what is abuse is important for everyone.

OhShutUpThomas · 04/03/2016 06:51

Not that Guardian Parity support AGAIN!
Do they all have it pinned up on their walls I wonder?

Congratulations Nixcos you just won the Internet 😂😂

Do you think they're all on some vile MRA forum somewhere that only operates at night, tag teaming losers to come over and moan at us?
It's quite pathetic that they have nothing better to do with their time except troll women's forums in the wee hours. FACT.

Ps - for an actual answer to your post, please do feel free to rtft (that's READ THE FUCKING THREAD) where we've gone over the points you've made several thousand times. You're not breaking new ground here with your amazing reply. You just look a twat.

FreshwaterSelkie · 04/03/2016 07:15

I almost feel sorry for the MRAs. Intellectually speaking, they've brought knives to a gun fight.

All those made up stats - it flaws me, it really does

And no, I don't think the ad is sexist, if we were still anywhere near the original point...

PunkrockerGirl · 04/03/2016 07:26

Day off from my low paid job today.
Going to mop my flaws later Wink

limitedperiodonly · 04/03/2016 07:27

Do they all have it pinned up on their walls I wonder?

Yes, just above the one that says: 'Now wash your hands'

Jasonandyawegunorts · 04/03/2016 07:39

There was a time when this thread was a pretty insightful discussion.

Our autocorrect-challenged friend was certainly the most entertaining MRA we've had for a long while. I'm still laughing at a 'man without his convent'. No man should ever be without his convent. His floors were pretty bad too, tut tut Grin

One part of me feels sorry for the MRAs - I feel they're a bit sad and bitter, life hasn't turned out right for them for whatever reason, and they're top of the pile (they're generally white males). Who to blame? Feminists of course. Them uppity, crazy women demanding to be treated like human beings! Complaining they've been raped! Some of them are even getting into STEM subjects now! Then they find a voice for men, and before they know it, they're trolling MN at 3am. Sad state of affairs really.

But they come on here and call us cunts, and I think meh.

RufusTheReindeer · 04/03/2016 08:18

zigs posts were a bit of a roller coaster for me

I thought "aaah bless him"

And then

"What now!!!"

And then

"Either english is not his first language or he has been dreadfully let down by the british education system"

And then

"What the fuck!!!!"

And then back to "bless him"

It was like an episode of Walking dead...complete wiith zombies turning up at the end Grin

I've only managed to get to page 5 before making myself stop (building frustration & lack of sleep does not make for a good combo), so my apologies if this has already been said in one form or another, but surely the emphasis should just be on abusive relationships in all forms regardless of gender, or even intimacy?
My last long term relationship fell apart after months of my being manipulated, the people around me saying nothing despite having suspicions, and ultimately I came off looking like an unstable kook. I take ownership of my behaviour at the time, still regularly regret a lot of what was said and done (though there was never any physical violence during the relationship), but she spent over a year playing games with my head, isolating me, lying to friends and colleauges, living at least two lives - and at no point was I seen as a victim by anyone but a few close friends who I only managed to reconnect to after she'd done playing me for a fool.
She'd grown up in an abusive household, as had I. Both had history of unhealthy partnerships and pairings and both had moments of letting those factors sour us, become excuses for who we were to each other and why we did the things we did.
I think my point is this : I'm not a fan of the anthropomorphic body part advert, don't think it does the campaign or its ideals justice, and I don't think sexism has anything to do with it. Gender roles and biases, on the other hand... She was a victim, and I was a dick. It was a two way street though, and not often are people willing to admit that can be the case.

PosieReturningParker · 04/03/2016 08:31

I'm in oar of this thread, it's hellarious.

BeyondTellsEveryoneRealFacts · 04/03/2016 09:26

Til i saw the "mopping the flaws" comment, i didnt twig on "the floor in your argument"

Anyway, i just want to say www.theguardian.com/society/2010/sep/05/men-victims-domestic-violence and 40%
In case you missed them

Fact

OhShutUpThomas · 04/03/2016 10:12

Wow Beyond! I've never seen that before!

And if the info was provided by an MRA group, it MUST be true Shock

TrueBlu · 04/03/2016 10:19

I loathe "what about the menz" whingers.

Because who cares about that 40% right? Fuck 'em Hmm... Should've known it would be you coming out with a comment like that Fartdust.

BeyondTellsEveryoneRealFacts · 04/03/2016 10:44

40%, is it trueblu? I must have missed that stat being given.

RufusTheReindeer · 04/03/2016 10:45

trueblu

A number of people on the thread have argued that the 40% figure is wrong

fact

TrueBlu · 04/03/2016 10:50
Grin

But even if it was 5%, I do feel it should still be addressed.

BeyondTellsEveryoneRealFacts · 04/03/2016 10:53

But it has been? There is a breakdown waaaay upthread of the five adverts and (off the top of my head, i cba to try to find the post to check) only three are aimed at women

TrueBlu · 04/03/2016 10:53

I know an awful lot of men who have been attached by their female partners. Two were stabbed. Not one of these men reported the incidents for a number of reasons.

One victim was my brother, it happens a lot and yes it may be a smaller percent but that in no way should mean it's not an issue and that men shouldn't whinge Hmm

TrueBlu · 04/03/2016 10:55

X post.

I've never seen any ads other than those aimed at women, I guess that's not to say they aren't out there...

BeyondTellsEveryoneRealFacts · 04/03/2016 11:20

I'm talking about this exact campaign, not random ads aimed at men
