To be sad that more people don't consider rescue dogs?

Overly emotional, flicking through Facebook, and several local shelters are at capacity and appealing for homes for their residents. Rows and rows of sad looking middle aged dogs. Breaks my heart.

We're currently at canine capacity so none of them can come here (probably Grin) but I can't fathom why nobody wants them... 😢

Agree Sparkle, hope you have a lovely time with your new ddog.

Quod the rationale is that you can raise, train, and socialise the pup yourself in order to ensure it has a well-rounded upbringing, free of trauma, poor training, abuse etc. Many rescue dogs have a patchy history at best.

My friend rescued a beautiful terrier cross that had been assessed by the in-house behaviorists as having no problems, and which would be fine for her family and elderly lab. Two days later it tore off her other dogs ear for no apparent reason. It emerged his previous owners had bought a younger, larger, aggressive dog that they couldn't be bothered to train, and so they'd given the terrier to the rescue because the new dog kept going for it. That terrier should NEVER have been rehomed with another dog.

She bought a puppy after that. Which is tolerated by her old boy, even if she does kick him out of his basket Grin

"This lovely dog can be homed with primary school-aged children.

She is a long-stay, probably because she is a staffie"

I'm feeling so sorry for that staffy...

The law is that you're supposed to keep your dog under control, because other people don't she has to be muzzled even though it says she's fine with dogs who don't come over and hassle her...so that's two people so far who wouldn't want her because of the muzzle when the problem isn't even actually hers, it's the other dog ignoring her I don't want to be friends signals and the other dog owners who don't bother to call their dog back from an on lead dog.

That's just so sad actually. Sad

I agree Quod and I have a friend who returned a springer to the breeder for aggression and another one who's Hungarian vizla bit Dd2. There is no guarantee at all but people will do what they want ultimately.

I completely disagree that we shouldn't help dogs from other countries. Do you understand how bad the conditions are for dogs in places like Romania and Serbia, where they treat street dogs worse than vermin? The worst shelter here is a bloody palace compared to the best of them over there Sad. You don't even want to know how they "euthanise" these poor animals, it would turn your stomach.
We have had our Romanian rescue from a small independent charity for almost 4 months. He's an absolute sweetheart though not without his issues given his horrific past. We're working on it and never have I done anything so rewarding as watching him blossom into a wonderful young dog.
A dog in need is a dog in need wherever it comes from. If there are people out there willing to spend time, effort and money bringing these dogs over here to loving homes from the absolute hellholes that they are in presently, then more power to them. It's their business.
Incidentally we had 3 dogs already (one a UK rescue). Absolutely no intentions of taking on a 4th so it's not like a UK dog would have benefitted. But this particular dog...his story totally broke my heart and so we gave him a home. And therefore freed up a space for some other poor broken wee soul to be saved. I can't understand why people who profess to love dogs would have any objection to that. They're all dogs in need but unfortunately, some are much more in need than others.

I rescue/ rehom racing greyhounds. Can be rehomed with scool aged children and some with cats. Only reason not recommended with pre-schoolers is the waging tail! Retired greyhound charities will match dog to your circumstances. Definitely feel problem is lack of education with regards to puppy farming, if only the public were more aware.

Ginger you are so right in that, I feel the same. My Dad has a Romanian rescue, the sweetest dog that I have ever met. Often the people criticising wouldn't rescue a dog from this country though, so are in no position to judge. Those dogs are in a living hell sometimes.
