To be sad that more people don't consider rescue dogs?

Overly emotional, flicking through Facebook, and several local shelters are at capacity and appealing for homes for their residents. Rows and rows of sad looking middle aged dogs. Breaks my heart.

We're currently at canine capacity so none of them can come here (probably Grin) but I can't fathom why nobody wants them... 😢

Battersea is great at what it does but it's not comparable to a normal rescue , we visited on a Sunday ,had an interview and took away a puppy on the same day ,from our view point it was fantastic ( my mum has had battersea pups in the past and had the same experience )but it's not for everyone .

stumblymonkey · 27/02/2016 10:50

We aren't in a position to have a dog yet anyway as we're still renting at the moment.

I will look at rescues for 'my' dog when the time comes (although I know DP will want to get 'his' dog as a puppy).

I have had cats from rescue before (and also from kittens) but will definitely get my next cats from rescue. It's a bit easier though as cats don't have such defined breed characteristics.

Peaceandloveeveryone · 27/02/2016 10:52

Do they not home check Floral? Shock

stumblymonkey · 27/02/2016 10:53

Yes Peace...I saw her, adorable Smile

But for example...she can live with older children whereas we will have small DCs.

I'm not anti-rescue at all but just explaining what puts people like my DP off.

Katenka · 27/02/2016 10:54

Both me and dh wohm. We got knocked back by two rescue shelters because ds is under 10. They wouldn't consider homing with us at all. Not that they didn't have a suitable dog.

He has always been around dogs. I want them to have a dog growing up.

stumblymonkey · 27/02/2016 10:55

Now I'm trawling cat rescue centres having promised myself and DP we would stick to two cats for the time being after our other two passed away. Confused Must. Stop. Grin

Peaceandloveeveryone · 27/02/2016 10:56

Stumbly I ended up with one from here that someone had found run over and covered in fleas.Grin.
She is a fat princess snoring on my lap now.

carlajean · 27/02/2016 11:01

sorry to derail, just to say that we believe our dog is a Staffie/Jack Russell cross (a Jaffie?) and it's a fantastic combination.

I was bored at work and started looking at free ads pet pages. I was disgusted the amount of pets being rejected due to 'circumstance'. One woman was giving up her cat as her friend gave it to her and now she doesn't want it. That's what she actually wrote!

Floralnomad · 27/02/2016 11:04

They didn't home check us and my mum has had 2 lots of dogs from them and never been home checked . We were good candidates , I'm at home all day , youngest child at the time was 11 , I don't know if they home check people who actually live in London but we had gone up from Kent to the London site . We gave them our vets details for them to get a reference if they wanted but I doubt they did as the vets never told me and I'm there a lot and friendly with the senior partner . The pup we took had very bad kennel cough , he'd been there for 8 days having been handed in as a stray but was not ' on display' . We had looked around and not found a suitable dog and asked if they had anything else and they came out with a staff pup and a black patterdale mix which is the one we took . It was a fabulous experience for us and the dog has turned out to be brilliant .

MrsJayy · 27/02/2016 11:06

A jaffie Grin

Peaceandloveeveryone · 27/02/2016 11:06

There is a thread on MN at the moment from someone who has bought a puppy and wants to give it up. Very high energy breed Sad

Peaceandloveeveryone · 27/02/2016 11:08

Carla what a sweet face your Jaffy has.

UpWithPup · 27/02/2016 11:12

Our nearest rehoming centre won't bet us adopt because we're 'not in their catchment' Hmm

LaurieLemons · 27/02/2016 11:12

I think people should be fined for dumping their dogs too. Then people would bother to find them another home first. I agree they need to lay off with the rules a bit as well. You can never be sure, even with a puppy. I would bet my life that my rescue dog wouldn't hurt DS (not that I take that chance). My 10 month old puppy is nuts though I wouldn't trust her for a minute. Obviously some dogs have issues, but surely not all of them?

Floralnomad · 27/02/2016 11:14

Just seen that thread peace , honestly what do people expect when they buy large breed ,high energy pups .

MummySparkle · 27/02/2016 11:14

There are rescue puppies too - we have a gorgeous rescue doggie who we've had from a pup. Poor mum was brought over from Ireland to dogs trust and gave birth the second she got off the van Sad she must've been so scared. We have two under 3 in our house so getting a rescue dog would be out of the question, but when the DCs are teen we probably will when DDog is no longer with us (don't want to think about that now)

But anyway, you can put yourself on a waiting list for a rescue puppy and it's so worth doing. I think we had to pay £80 for DDog, covered all of his paperwork, his vaccinations and him being neutered, lead and food for a few weeks. I'm sure we paid less than all of that cost. And he is the most loving stupid good natured dog I've ever met

Peaceandloveeveryone · 27/02/2016 11:16

Sounds as if it's crated for most of the day Floral and left alone.

MrsJayy · 27/02/2016 11:18

I sometimes think people dont think getting a puppy through your life changes when you get a dog i know somebody who has a young dog they are always looking for dog sitters as they are here there and everywhere but organise social life before thinking of dog sitters its so frustrating because its usually an emotional plea on facebook drives me nuts

stumblymonkey · 27/02/2016 11:21

One of my friends pissed me off beyond belief last year.

She has a Siamese cat already (very timid and affectionate) and was looking for another lap cat. However she's quite shallow and instead of going to a local rescue decided to adopt an ex-street cat from Dubai (because it would be a talking point I think) which was then flown over to the UK.

Said ex-street cat funnily enough was not a lap cat and was not exactly going to be a snuggly companion to her Siamese so she gave it back after a week.

I cannot understand some people's thinking process AT ALL.

That...along with some other stuff (drink driving, and other personal stuff) mean that I now do not consider her as a close friend any more.

Toofat2BtheFly · 27/02/2016 11:26

We had our rescue from Birmingham dogs home (dogs trust) .our dds were 3&5 and I worked p/t ..... They did a home check to make sure our garden was secure ,

Having young dcs isn't always a no no.

Ddog is a absolute pita .. I've got no garden left ..chewed through carpet and I'm constantly covered in dog hair . BUT she is the most gentle and loving friend to us and the kids and I wouldn't give her back for anything !

She is a staff cross lurcher ..runs dead fast then has to sleep it off for 8 hrsGrin

Wolfiefan · 27/02/2016 11:27

I'm only thinking of getting a dog now I have given up work. My youngest is school age. I have the time and energy to train, walk and entertain. I'm still expecting a bit of a shock!

Toofat2BtheFly · 27/02/2016 11:28

We have a cat too .... They have agreed to disagree ,toofatcat is the boss anyway !Grin

Wolfiefan · 27/02/2016 11:30

Peace I've just had a look at that thread. A Weimaraner! Beautiful but bonkers! And people criticise me ruling out certain breeds!

TitClash · 27/02/2016 11:30

YABU.
The problem is that there are too many dogs in rescue. Get to the root of that problem. Why are the dogs there?

If its because the owners have lost their job and can no longer afford to keep the dog, the RSPCA or another large charity should start a Dogs Credit Union type scheme where owners are provided with food and basic vet care, and when they have the money they can repay the loan. That would actually cost the shelters less than taking in the dogs.

If its because the shelters are taking dogs from puppy farms, they should stop doing that. They are supporting the puppy farmers. Puppy farms wont close until they are unprofitable. Giving them a free way to get rid of their old breeding stock is not an ethical thing for a dog charity to do. At least charge them for taking the dogs, and not the new owners.

If its because they are importing dogs from Romania and elsewhere, then again, there are an unlimited supply of unwanted dogs worldwide and not enough homes for them all. Is it a good use of resources to spend £200+ to have a dog vaccinated and flown here?
