Grrrrrrrr. I'm hate it. I am all for celebrating reading and books but this yearly dress up activity at school drives me mad!

I have 2 Dc, they both want me to buy ready made costumes which will cost £30 or more! So not happening. I will still have to cobble something together though. I can't be arsed. We don't have anything. I have scoured the Internet for ideas. Kids either don't like the ideas or I don't have the stuff.

Sod off WBD!

Jeans and t/shirt = Charlie Cook Smile

Mine went as him every year Grin

Our school have said nothing about World Book Day, it's not on the calendar or the website.

Then yesterday the school newsletter came out and it said they would be sending out information about WBD "shortly".

Last year they had us organise "hero" costumes by sending a letter out on Monday evening, with the costume needed for Thursday morning. So two days notice to buy or make something.

Other schools gave out notice for WBD weeks ago. I will not be happy if they wait until next week and then spring some sort of theme on us.

IdaJones · 25/02/2016 10:05

I'm going to ask that the school gives more notice of dress up days hygge. We were told on tuesday, but i asked before half term and was told they hadn't decided yet. The children have been told to come as their favourite character which is fine if its a character you have stuff at home you could use for, but sometimes you are going to need to ask around/look round charity shops/ buy stuff and slightly more time would be good for that

LarrytheCucumber · 25/02/2016 10:14

It's not that much fun for the teachers either, being expected to dress up year after year. My costumes were decidedly limited- Burglar Betty and Grandma Swagg as I recall! ;)

notquitehuman · 25/02/2016 10:17

Just put some animal ears on them. Voila, they're one of the Beatrix Potter animals. I dunno which one, there are loads.

Allice · 25/02/2016 10:32

I hate it too.

But have had a bit of a result with my kids this year.
My son who is 8 is going as Raj from the David Walliams books, I'm thinking trousers and shirt and cardi, I have ordered him a name badge from eBay which cost about £2 saying Raj on it.

My daughter who is 11 is going as the witch who's name I can't remember from Wicked, she had a witches dress and green face paint so we're sorted.
Had to buy a copy of Wicked though but it cost a couple of quid second hand so not terrible.

I wrote to the zoo had a lion in it?

BartholinsSister · 25/02/2016 10:35

Wasn't there a kid last year who rocked up as the fellow from 50 Shades of Grey? Caused a stir as I remember.

mogloveseggs · 25/02/2016 10:36

Dd wants to be bilbo baggins or gandalf. Previous years we've done the hodgeheg, pippi longstocking, room on the broom. Can't remember others. Ds's nursery haven't mentioned it yet.

mogloveseggs · 25/02/2016 10:38

Ps yanbu. It is hard work and schools often give hardly any notice.

IdaJones · 25/02/2016 10:44

The mum of the 11 year old who went as Christian Grey (complete with cable ties and blind fold) was a primary school teacher. Odd choice for an 11 year old.

I have a 23 month old who is in nursery full time. I have to confess, I had no idea what world book day was until yesterday when I had a letter home saying I had to dress her in her favourite book character, she's not even 2! By the looks of it I have many years of this shit to come. What the fuck do I dress her in?! Husband thinks we should forget about it...

MadisonAvenue · 25/02/2016 10:51

So glad my boys are in secondary school now and too old for this shit (even though they still encourage Yr 7 to dress up).

There was one child who my youngest son was at school with who's mother always ensured that he had the best costume. I'll never forget the time, not WBD but child from another nation day (not sure if it was something just done at this school), that he marched out of school in full Scottish national dress while playing his fucking bagpipes.

sphinxster · 25/02/2016 11:22

I used to work at a school for children with special needs (SLT). I'd just got back from 6 months backpacking and everything I own in storage, transit, or parents' loft and was told by the headmistress "there's no place in a school for people who don't dress up, you have to go and buy something"... That's definitely what's important, arse!

BernardsarenotalwaysSaints · 25/02/2016 11:46

Mine aren't too bad as the school don't really put any restrictions on what they can go as. DD wants to go as Hermione Granger, so really just her school uniform, a wand, a cloak (which is easy enough for me to run up) & frizzy hair. DS is the Fat Controller from Thomas the Tank Engine so a top hat & waistcoat (which we already have as I couldn't find a yellow one). Last year DD went as Zoe from Zoe & Beans, so just a red dress & a stuffed dog toy for Beans.

Yokohamajojo · 25/02/2016 11:51

Mine is going as the wimpy kid, black jeans and t-shirt! he hates dressing up

Catphrase · 25/02/2016 11:56

My kids school have always been incredibly sensible and not done dressing up.
This year they are dressing up. All I can see it doing is wasting £15 of parents money and keeping costume sellers in business

EponasWildDaughter · 25/02/2016 12:02

YES! YA NOT BU OP.

When you've got multiple kids at primary all these project/competitions/dress up days get very stressful. And i've never seen much good come out of any of it for the kids.

I can tell you; the year the brand new and over keen head master had all of us TA's dress up as bloody oompa loompas on world book day was one i'd like to forget too.

Goldenhandshake · 25/02/2016 12:37

Luckily dd just wants to be red riding hood, easily and cheaply sorted via amazon.

TreadSoftlyOnMyDreams · 25/02/2016 12:38

I've just discovered that the school have said no dressing up this year. They have to bring their favourite book in.

Saving dressing up as your favourite sportsperson for Sports Relief Day instead so only a temporary reprieve. Hurrah for next week though !!

TreadSoftlyOnMyDreams · 25/02/2016 12:39

Which is handy as DD wanted to go as Stickman.

BeyondBootcampsAgain · 25/02/2016 12:44

You England/Scotland/Elsewhere mners should be grateful - we have St Davids day as well, two days before WBD!!!

LarrytheCucumber · 25/02/2016 12:53

LarrytheCucumber · 25/02/2016 12:54

5Foot5 · 25/02/2016 13:49

Aw I used to love World Book Day when DD was at primary. Not a competitive Mum honest! But DD liked dressing up and I just enjoy making costumes (and yes I did work full time but I am not some Mummy-martyr I just like doing it)

But surely it can be as easy as you want it to be. Paint red scar on the head and wear some toy glasses - Harry Potter. Red cardigan and basket of play food - Little Red Riding Hood.

If kids don't like the ideas then may I ask how old they are? If more than about 9 suggest that they sort something out for themselves. By the time DD was in Y5 they were told they should be doing most of the costume themselves and any prizes only went to children who had clearly made their own.

DD is at Uni now but still takes every opportunity to do fancy dress!
