to think that buses were designed as torture chambers for the pregnant?

The lady sitting beside me has such bad gas I am surprised birds aren't falling from the sky.

A group of kids has just walked on with greasy chicken and chips.

No one was giving up a seat for an elderly man so I got up and got off the bus to wait for the next one- also to get some fresh air.

Two women at opposite sides of the bus shelter were smoking.

Got on next bus. Came upstairs as fewer smells and people. Now a mum is playing some sort of loud annoying cartoon to her daughter at full volume on her smart phone.

I want to cry.

Eminado, it's mumsnet. Unfortunately whilst most of us take threads in the way they are intended and support others when they are struggling, some want to jump down your throat no matter what you do / say / intend and choose to be ignorant and obtuse.

Either way - hope it passes for you soon!!! I am only 8 weeks so not even showing but feel like utter shit...

Buses are horrible this is why i drive everywhere. I dont mind a train though or a night bus but a bus in the day is a no no

LifeofI · 24/02/2016 17:20

You could smoke on buses before? My god that must of been hell!

Unicorncatsack · 24/02/2016 17:24

People are being sniffy on this thread. Fuck knows why. Just because you did not find public transport any harder in pregnancy doesn't mean it's the same way for everyone.

I actually didn't have a bad early pregnancy though, it's the third trimester I've found harder to deal with.

fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 24/02/2016 17:24

How dare you start a lighthearted thread grumbling about the bus. Shame on you AngryWink

fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 24/02/2016 17:25

I'm not even pregnant and the bus pisses me off. People making disgusting sniffing and throat clearing noises. Yuk.

maamalady · 24/02/2016 17:31

OP says "AIBU to think that buses were designed as torture chambers for the pregnant?". Yes, absolutely YABU! I have no argument that the things you list are unpleasant, but pregnancy has no particular impact - they're hideous for all. Feel free to make (erroneous) assumptions about my pregnancies if you like, but YABU all the same.

If you were just complaining about the bus in general, then fine, but making it about pregnancy just makes you sound precious.

notasillysausage · 24/02/2016 17:34

Evil giraffe, if you have morning sickness then bad smells make you throw up. If you don't have morning sickness they are just unpleasant. Being physically sick is worse than just enduring an unpleasant smell. So it is worse for pregnant people with morning sickness. Not everyone has the same experience of pregnancy as you. It's not that difficult to understand. Hmm

LondonStill83 · 24/02/2016 17:34

Unicorn, that must be awful too! I am not looking forward to that. How far long do you have?

Fanjo, I know right?! I mean HONESTLY, what was I thinking, sharing my experience?!

OP posts:
toomuchtooold · 24/02/2016 17:35

The point is though giraffe that many women when pregnant have a heightened sense of smell and nausea. So the bus is worse when you're pregnant. But I think you already understand the point the OP was trying to make.

fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 24/02/2016 17:36

You'd think it was a site for mums and future mums or something!

IggertyZiggertyZoom · 24/02/2016 17:38

Flowers I had this when pregnant too. A whiff of cigarette smoke and I was retching, utter misery.

LondonStill83 · 24/02/2016 17:38

sausage; yes! Thank you.

I may be having a sense of humour failure today but at least I have empathy!

Even about the lady with gas, i thought, bless her that must be so embarrassing and uncomfortable.

OP posts:
LondonStill83 · 24/02/2016 17:40

Iggerty did anything help? Food seems to be the worst for me but those two ladies at the stop almost did me in today.

Fanjo, yes, you would almost think this was the PERFECT place to share this experience, but clearly not.

Count your blessings OP.

The woman behind you could have been having a long conversation about her love life on her phone.
And there's always someone who chews gum with their mouth open within two seats of me.

Grin
maamalady · 24/02/2016 17:44

I do in fact have pregnancy-related heightened sense of smell right now. I still think the OP is being precious, and smelly buses are deeply unpleasant for everyone.

I hope the sensitivity to smells/sickness lessen for you, OP.

maamalady · 24/02/2016 17:46

If what you want is people saying "there there" rather than speaking up if they disagree, maybe post in Pregnancy rather than AIBU next time :)

I fell over on the bus when I was 30 weeks pregnant as the driver didn't wait for me to sit down. Everyone just sat there and stared at me. It was awful.

MammasBrandNewBag · 24/02/2016 18:12

Public transport is awful when you are pregnant, especially the bus. It was never fun but it became a special kind of hell when I was expecting.

MotherKat · 24/02/2016 18:14

Feel for you OP, just started to be able to eat properly again (my babies were born a week ago) and commuting was the worst, once I was showing I could at least claim the priority seat near the door.
I'll own up, if in mid November you were held up at rush hour on the circle line due to "an ill pregnant woman being escorted from the train" that was me, an elderly gentleman reeking of aftershave and cigars sat next to me and I threw up in my handbag and passed out.
The worst bit was that they asked for my oyster card, it was in the side pocket I threw up in.

HumphreyCobblers · 24/02/2016 18:16

smelly buses when not pregnant are unpleasant for the OP

smelly buses when pregnant make the OP actually feel ill

This seems entirely understandable to me. Pregnancy heightens your sense of smell and your nausea reflex. I don't understand why people find this so hard to understand

hazeyjane · 24/02/2016 18:16

AIBU hasn't changed to 'Just Arse Me Up Please' (JAMUP) yet has it? Every AIBU thread I have seen has been a bloody pile up recently.

When I was pregnant my sense of smell was off the scale, washing powder, aftershave, soap and the smell of chips made me heave, the only smell that didn't was mint. I catch buses a lot and yes they are cauldrons of funk but much worse when pregnant, also when I had chemo, but I avoided the bus completely then.

fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 24/02/2016 18:19

Yes it's surely not imPOssible to understand.

LondonStill83 · 24/02/2016 18:20

Motherkat, poor you! That sounds awful.

I wish that instead of free dental they gave pregnant women free hovercrafts!

Now that would be fun!
