Do you believe that Heely's are for girls?

My dh thinks this and doesnt think its a good idea to get them for his birthday. He really wants them. I was so shocked by his comment. The male/female thing never occurred to me. My dh says he will be laughed at. Why? They are trainers with wheels. You get them in a mix of colours. What the hell has being female/male got to do with it? It has annoyed me!
What do you think?

My 12 year old son has a pair of heels.

Greengardenpixie · 18/02/2016 14:21

Back to the thread though.
Its not for me, its not for my dh but for my ds who is 8 and my dh seems to think they are feminine.

Around here they tend to be used more by boys than girls.

I think the only person who will be laughed at is your dh - for believing that genitals affect the operation of Heelies.

ProfYaffle · 18/02/2016 14:27

I've never noticed a gender divide in their use. I did think your dh wanted them for himself though which I was a bit Hmm about! Grin

BarbarianMum · 18/02/2016 14:27

Definitely not for adults their bones take too long to heal.

Sparklingbrook · 18/02/2016 15:17

I have seen boys and girls in them, but i thought they were a bit old hat now.

YY to them being a PITA whoever is wearing them.

CooPie10 · 18/02/2016 15:18

I have to say I haven't seen them on boys but aren't they out of style now?

BackforGood · 18/02/2016 15:23

Same as Prof - I was more concerned about an adult wearing them.
I've never seen them as being a thing for girls or for boys, they are just a toy / gimmick thing like roller skates or bikes or anything else that has never been aimed at one sex more than the other.

Not that I have an issue with more traditional "girls" or "Boys" things being used by the other sex, but that's another thread altogether as it isn't even an issue in this case.

Katenka · 18/02/2016 15:29

They are unisex aren't they? I always thought they were.

But when I think about it, it is mainly girls I see in them.

I don't think that should mean you ds can't have them though. If my ds wanted them I would get them.

But they wouldn't be for going shopping in.

NNalreadyinuse · 18/02/2016 15:30

I bought some for my 14 year old ds. They are definitely not a 'girly' trainer.

My dd (8) has some too I let her wear them in the supermarket cos the floors are all smooth. She hasn't knocked into anyone because of them. She is less of a pita in them than adults who swing their baskets round at child head height or who block up the aisles/doors because they've bumped into Gladys from 3 doors doen and fancy a natter!

AuldYow · 18/02/2016 15:32

Your DH IBU - totally not gender specific my two DSs have them. But as a previous poster said I thought they were a phase which had long gone. My two got theirs years ago. It's actually quite nice when crazes take off which appeal to both girls and boys.

HighwayDragon1 · 18/02/2016 16:23

Yabu. Heelys aren't for anyone.

Stanky · 18/02/2016 16:32

A guy in his 20s wore them at my work. He did look a bit silly whizzing around on them, but they seemed to make him very happy, and perhaps even more efficient and productive.

Toocold · 18/02/2016 16:36

My ds has some... He is also off for an award at karate later... They are for anyone that gets enjoyment from them... I hate this gender divide, it's ridiculous.

coffeetasteslikeshit · 18/02/2016 16:39

My boys have them.

Greengardenpixie · 18/02/2016 17:15

The thought of my dh wearing them Grin.
Its a ridiculous comment by my dh imo. I personally didnt give it a second thought. My dh keeps saying that he never sees boys wearing them, but so what? Actually, i rarely see anyone wearing them.
I dont care if they are in or out of fashion. Thats a bit like saying a doll is out of fashion. Its a toy and apart from toys linked to films, they dont really go out do they?
Anyway, thanks for the feedback. I'm glad to know I am not going mad!

OP posts:
Sparklingbrook · 18/02/2016 17:16

I don't see it as going out of fashion, more that the craze is over.

Greengardenpixie · 18/02/2016 17:19

Well yes, it will be...but then things do come back. Nevertheless,
my children dont care about what is in and out atm. The fact is that his sister has them and he wants them too. He wants them for his birthday.

  • or should say would like, not want makes him sound like a brat

DS loves his. He'd wear them to school if he could.

steff13 · 18/02/2016 17:28

I have to say I haven't seen them on boys but aren't they out of style now?

They are here, thank goodness. I haven't seen kids wearing them in a few years.

LittleLionMansMummy · 18/02/2016 17:53

Ds wants some. He's 5 and I won't buy him them because he struggles to stay upright in the best of circumstances and I honestly can't think of a more inappropriate shoe for posture and growing feet/ bodies.

WhereYouLeftIt · 18/02/2016 17:58

"My dh thinks [Heelys are for girls] and doesnt think its a good idea to get them for his birthday. He really wants them."
Surely they are for children (of both sexes)? What age is DH?

iwantavuvezela · 18/02/2016 18:01

Lily whites do their own brand of these and in lovely strong plain colours (red, green, black) - also cheaper than the branded ones.

0christmastree5 · 18/02/2016 18:03

My now teenage dd and ds loved Heeleys I miss telling them off for whizzing around tesco. Def not for girls. Ridiculous !
