...to be annoyed that even women will say that lady parts "smell of fish"?

puzzledbyadream · 18/02/2016 12:06

Reading the scented SanPro thread and I noticed a woman saying that lady parts didn't smell nice because they smell fishy. Now unless you have a nasty case of Bacterial Vaginosis (easily sorted) then your lady parts do not smell of fish and it's weird to say they do. It sort of perpetuates this whole "vaginas are gross" thing imo.

Presumably clean = washed. I.e. running water applied to it regularly. Any dirty stuff washed off? what else would it mean? Not given the Cillit Bang treatment presumably :)

OurBlanche · 18/02/2016 17:04

Bump I agree. In the milliseconds between washing, wiping and douching my va-jay-jay never smells.

Back in the real world, my fanny can smell at any time during the day. I don't anticipate leaping into the shower between say, 6.30 in the morning and 7.30 at night. So my fanny has at least 13 hours a day to smell however the hell it wants to. And it often likes it remind me of certain meals I have eaten.

I don't shout at it, put it down or tell it that it is dirty, I just appreciate the effort it has gone to Smile

tingon · 18/02/2016 17:04

I have one thing to say to you AskingForAPal .... wind.

OurBlanche · 18/02/2016 17:05

Asking you let a glorious pun pass you by!

Clit Bang! Grin

Doubleuponcoffee · 18/02/2016 17:07

Everyone gets asparagus pee but pee doesn't come out of your vagina. Or go near it

tingon · 18/02/2016 17:09

Well I'm with you Blanche, mine smells of nothing usually, but perhaps we have very delicate noses and notice things about ourselves that others don't.

Sparklingbrook · 18/02/2016 17:09

I din't get asparagus pee. I don't eat the stuff, it's horrible.

OurBlanche · 18/02/2016 17:10

Well, no. Not everyone gets asparagus pee.

And if your urethra is nowhere near your vagina, or vulva, you are oddly built, for a woman!

Still finding it odd that anyone would be so determined to insist a well known phenomenon does not exist!

BillBrysonsBeard · 18/02/2016 17:12

I'm a very clean person but it does smell a bit fishy at the end of the day, it's a damp musty place where urine comes out, of course it will have a smell. But I am at peace with this Grin Definitely shouldn't be used as an insult though! I've known men go off oral sex because of bad experiences with women smelling badly so that's why it's good to have a wash beforehand.

Pantone363 · 18/02/2016 17:13

The more you wash them the more they smell. Just open and waft some water in that direction in the bath. If you have to! No scrubbing or soap or flannels.

Who was the poster who had a stinky fanny and went to the GP; she'd forgotten to take her tampon out for ages?! Think it's in classics

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 18/02/2016 17:13

Not everyone gets asparagus pee double, and I can't agree that pee doesn't come out of your vagina. Or go near it. It's all pretty close tigether, not on your foot or head of some other location.

Doubleuponcoffee · 18/02/2016 17:13

Blanche peeing on your vulva and making it smell is different to the secretions from inside for vagina smelling isn't it? I'm confused which one your suggesting.

I think it goes without saying that if you don't eat asparagus, you won't get asparagus pee.

Sparklingbrook · 18/02/2016 17:14

I would hope not Double because that would be very wrong.

OurBlanche · 18/02/2016 17:22

Not everyone who does eat asparagus will get asparagus pee.

That's because there are many reasons for a fanny to smell. It tends to be a discharge if vaginal, but not always. Which is why I added vulva. That mucus membrane can smell of all sorts of wonderful things, some listed earlier. It is a really simple mechanism, sweat. Nothing unusual and anyone can experience it, clean or not.

GlassJar · 18/02/2016 17:37

I only get the fishy smell after sex - it goes on for a day or so. Difficult to 'wash out'.

So it's not me - it's a man smell!

TitClash · 18/02/2016 17:38

YANBU. No one says vaginas smell of fish other than complete mysoginist twats.

ollsbolls · 18/02/2016 17:50

Speaking as a man, no, you're not BU: a vulva is a beautiful thing (taste, smell and all).

Absolutely no call for faffing about adding bloomin' 'cleansing infusions' or whatever modern-day lysol, connerie companies are plugging: they're just dandy as they are.

Doubleuponcoffee · 18/02/2016 17:57

I've always been told that everyone has asparagus wee but not everyone can smell it. A quick Google seems to agree- are they wrong?
This article is quite interesting and comes down on the side of no one really knows

www.independent.co.uk/news/science/why-does-asparagus-make-some-peoples-urine-smell-but-not-others-a6683661.html

Blanche is there a name for this phenomenon of your vaginal secretions smelling of the food
You eat? You seem very convinced by it but I've never heard of it. A quick google just suggested foods which claim to make your discharge smell sweet, I can't see anything about a condition where eating fish makes your discharge smell fishy?

Sparklingbrook · 18/02/2016 17:59
CrunchyNu77er · 18/02/2016 18:23

I'll second a PP regarding cranberry juice, drink some after eating fish, no fishy fanny the next day. I don't know how it works, but it does.

theycallmemellojello · 18/02/2016 18:54

I agree that there's a misogynist strain in saying that vaginas are smelly. However, it's not exactly feminist to suggest that every vaginal odour means you have an illness or an infection. Great if you don't have a smelly vagina. Agreed that strong odour may mean infection - or just that you need a shower. But some odour is completely normal and should not be stigmatised.

EnthusiasmDisturbed · 18/02/2016 20:18

Of course there is an odour perfectly normal

The area gets very little air and we sweat

Unless you have an infection the smell isn't strong but for myself what I eat can change the way i smell all over and of course sex smell which sometimes just lingers. I smell more when on my period blood smells why pretend otherwise but it's not strong and it's manageable if you keep yourself clean (personally I use soap and water, tried just water for a while and didn't feel as clean) I tend to sweat more too and my breath smells differently when I am on my period, hormonal changes makes our bodies smell differently

woollytights · 18/02/2016 20:56

I'm not going to pretend I like the smell of fannies for the sake of political correctness. I dislike the smell of anyone's genitals to be honest, even if they're not fishy. Not being sexist doesn't mean you have to enthuse about every single mundane detail of womanhood.

WhenSheWasBadSheWasHorrid · 18/02/2016 21:17

Well according to dh I taste of onion after I eat (at lot) of onion.

I avoid oniony dishes if I'm up for sex. He would still go down on me even with the onion taste - but I know he hates onion.

wibblypig1 · 18/02/2016 22:07

double here you go dear... A quick Google of "fishy smell after eating fish" throws sone stuff up...
