...to be annoyed that even women will say that lady parts "smell of fish"?

puzzledbyadream · 18/02/2016 12:06

Reading the scented SanPro thread and I noticed a woman saying that lady parts didn't smell nice because they smell fishy. Now unless you have a nasty case of Bacterial Vaginosis (easily sorted) then your lady parts do not smell of fish and it's weird to say they do. It sort of perpetuates this whole "vaginas are gross" thing imo.

Did you say anything on the original thread? Not sure this needed a thread of it's own. Confused

OurBlanche · 18/02/2016 15:42

I always find that weird. Not that women say it, but that other women find it upsetting. After all, there are a number of reasons your, erm, lady bits can get smelly and some of the time the smell is very reminiscent of fish!

As is semen, sometimes, sort of cod liver oily.

I appreciate that some women have never experienced it and so have no personal experience, but that doesn't override the reality, sometimes a fanny can smell fishy.

jadorecakesnbiscuits · 18/02/2016 15:47

Sometimes they do though, I used to clean my privates obsessively when I was at school through fear of being one of the fishy girls that boys ripped into, I developed some flora issues and became a fishy girl myself.

jadorecakesnbiscuits · 18/02/2016 15:48

Sometimes sweat can smell oniony, it's not offensive it's just factual

TheFlyingFauxPas · 18/02/2016 15:53

I think mine smells fishy if a man has cone in it. Takes a couple of days to waft away despite copious washings 😊 there was an odd fishy smell in an old flat I shared with a BF. I blamed him. Turned out it was a burning plug socket! Mine also does smell a bit fishy the day after I've eaten fish.

So yes I concur. Sometimes ladies' bits can smell a bit fishy!

Gottagetmoving · 18/02/2016 16:03

Yes, A Vagina and female genitals can smell a bit fishy..even without an infection or poor hygiene.
The odour is similar to a fish smell,..not exactly the same. It will be stronger if you don't wash regularly, obviously.
It doesn't mean you are dirty. I doubt men years ago would have been bothered at all by it. Today though, everyone is obsessed with smells!

FirstWeTakeManhattan · 18/02/2016 16:08

I get more irritated at the word SanPro, if I'm honest. Not aimed at you OP, I mention on any thread that the word grates on me whenever I get the chance.

I know that instantly, loads of people will say 'I use the word all the time!' as soon as I say this, but I've never, ever heard anyone say SanPro.

I'm convinced it's a mn thing.

Sparklingbrook · 18/02/2016 16:10

I have never said 'Sanpro' or hear it in RL. But everyone knows what it means and saves typing 'feminine hygiene products'.

I don't get this theory that your vulva will smell of fish if you've eaten fish, even if the smell did come out in your urine. How much urine do you actually get all over your vulva anyway?!

OurBlanche · 18/02/2016 16:21

Do you never sweat out garlic, asparagus or sugar puffs either?

Lots of foods sweat out all over your body. Anywhere with sweat glands and/or a mucus membrane can be prone to it.

As I said, I get that some people haven't experienced it. I just don't get the point of not believing others who have!

MackerelOfFact · 18/02/2016 16:22

Bodily secretions do pick up smells from food you've eaten though. If I eat red meat or drink cheap vodka, I can smell it in my sweat the next day. My vaginal secretions definitely take on the aroma of garlic, onion, and yes, seafood if I've eaten it recently. It's not gross in itself, but since washing removes it, smelling of it for sustained periods of time is a bit nasty.

All vaginas look different, all vaginas smell different and have their own characteristic musk.

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 18/02/2016 16:26

I have asparagus pee, was absolutely Shock that not everybody else does. Thought it was just how it is.

Maybe it's the same as fishy vaginas.

Doubleuponcoffee · 18/02/2016 16:26

Yeah I'm not sure I buy that either. Vaginal secretions are the same as snot, eye gunk etc. snot doesn't smell fishy does it? And snot is connected to your mouth. How the hell can eating fish and having it pass through your tummy have anything to do with your vagina? The fish goes nowhere near it!

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 18/02/2016 16:28

But in your scenario I wouldn't get asparagus pee Double so you can't be right.

FlowersAndShit · 18/02/2016 16:32

I get asparagus pee and an awful fish smell whenever I eat fish. Pee is waste so I assume anything that isn't broken down by the body gets expelled hence the smell. My mother has exactly the same problem but hers is worse, she always honks of fish.

MackerelOfFact · 18/02/2016 16:33

I guess it's the involvement of apocrine glands, hormones and/or pH, Doubleuponcoffee. I'm pretty sure semen and breastmilk also take on flavours (and therefore, presumably, smells) from food too.

tingon · 18/02/2016 16:34

Well I sometimes smell fishy the day after eating fish, so does DH. Not always though.

timelytess · 18/02/2016 16:35

Double, I can assure you that you are incorrect. I don't want to give any further details, except to say that I wish the restaurant hadn't already sold out of halloumi when I dined there on Tuesday evening.

Behooven · 18/02/2016 16:40

I had beetroot pee once, it only took 5 baby beets.

Damn you Mrs Baxter!

FFTransform · 18/02/2016 16:52

I think everyone gets asparagus pee - but not everyone can smell it Grin

BumpTheElephant · 18/02/2016 16:54

Yanbu. All unwashed/infected genitalia both male and female smells unpleasant, clean genitalia of either sex doesn't smell. It's just a way to put women down.

tingon · 18/02/2016 16:59

Bump What do you mean by clean?

AskingForAPal · 18/02/2016 17:01

No I believe it, I just don't understand it. I think everyone gets asparagus pee but, like everything else, you won't notice is at much if you drink loads of tea/water/stuff.

One more benefit to being a vegetarian I guess

ClarenceTheLion · 18/02/2016 17:02

I clicked on the last Big Brother thread and read a slew of comments about 'stinky minge' woman. I didn't watch the show, but I gather another contestant dug her dirty underwear out of the laundry basket and made a fuss about the discharge on them. And instead of calling him a nasty bastard a lot of women gleefully joined in with him... I suppose their fannies are made of polished plastic?

Vaginas smell like vaginas. Penises smell like penises. Balls smell like balls. Spunk smells like spunk. Arseholes smell like arseholes. Shall I go on? Armpits smell like armpits. Feet smell like feet.

Men have a variety of smells going on in their underwear, but you wouldn't know it if you didn't have personal intimate knowledge of that fact, because it's rarely talked about, and I'm not sure why? Is it because vaginal odour is fetishized? To my knowledge no-one is gagging to buy a pair of used boxers from a vending machine in Japan...
