To be a tad annoyed with maternity unit

I phoned the maternity unit at 11am today after contracting since yesterday, they told me to come in for 5 tonight. Still contracting and I haven't been checked on
Just on a bed right next to the nurses station where I can here one nurse saying "bed 3 (me) can't possibly be in Labour she must have ate too much" is this standard Confused this is my first so no idea. Just in so much pain and not really sure what I expected Blush

One of the local hospitals here does routine scans on admission for every woman in labour. Portable scanner rather than the big 20 week scan type scanner.

JessieMcJessie · 18/02/2016 08:01

I'm afraid that in your position I'd have shouted "I heard that, and don't you mean eaten"?

FatimaLovesBread · 18/02/2016 08:07

If they weren't going to check you all night wouldn't it have been easier to give you a quick check and then send you home to labour at home for a bit?

Lj8893 · 18/02/2016 08:26

I can't believe they have left you all night when you could have been at home to spend your early labour. If I were you I would be saying I'm going home, somebody send a midwife out to me as I'm having a home birth.

Goingtobeawesome · 18/02/2016 08:27

MiaowTheCat - your post reminded me that around 6pm on the Saturday I was told I wouldn't have had the baby by my next appointment on the Monday.

DD was born 9:25pm. On the Saturday...

I go from 1-10cm in minutes and push out very quick.

Lilliput · 18/02/2016 08:37

Where about in the country are you?
Really shocked you have been in 12 hours and not had a vaginal examination. You could have been in the safety and comfort of your own home.

KeepSmiling83 · 18/02/2016 08:42

With DD2 I went from 5cm to baby being born in 30 minutes. I had delivered DD1 quickly but still no one believed me when I said I needed to push. They had to move quickly when they saw her head appear!

chocdonutyy · 18/02/2016 08:59

I only have the one but got checked as soon as I arrived at the maternity unit, contractions were every 2 minutes or probably less by then as I had to walk to the exam room and had to stop a few times, eyes were rolled by the mwAngry
Got examined and was 10cm so got a wheelchair then and df was born 50 minutes later!
I'd have thought an examination as soon as possible after you arrive would be priority, just to see how things are progressing.
I had a midwife visit at home less than 11 hours before I had dd, she had no idea I was in labour I had odd tummy pains and sickness/dihorrea starting the night before, now realised it was a clearout and contractors starting, she said I had a tummy bug Hmm on my due date too!

MamaLazarou · 18/02/2016 09:00

Maybe you went in to hospital too early, OP. It's a common mistake with your first: you get so excited about finally meeting your baby that you just can't wait. Try and rest as much as you can as you will need every scrap of energy for the labour.

Good luck!

PerspicaciaTick · 18/02/2016 11:04

I think some MWs are loathe to do a VE too quickly because most women don't like them and find them stressful, the MWs prefer to wait until they are absolutely necessary. Although why they can't just talk to women about what is happening, why and what to expect in terms of care so women understand their options, I really don't know.

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 18/02/2016 11:06

Good luck!

ICantThinkOfAUsernameH · 18/02/2016 11:27

Hope you've had an examination by now

CraftyPenguin · 18/02/2016 11:30

Shock I'm shocked they haven't examined you yet, as if you weren't far along you could have been resting at home.

Hope there's some progress for you Flowers

Fancymarmite · 18/02/2016 12:08

How odd! In my hospital, if you were only contracting every 8 minutes, you'd have had a quick check as soon as there was an examination room free, and then been sent home if not in established labour.

I'm amazed that hospitals have the staff and capacity to keep women in overnight unnecessarily.

Really hope labour has started now for you.

DoJo · 18/02/2016 12:41

They can tell what way your baby is lying by palpating you! What an unnecessary scan!

NO THEY CAN'T!! I was palpated by around 15-20 people during (what turned out to be) an unnecessary 3 day induction and it was only when they were on the brink of breaking my waters that they discovered my baby was breech. Given that the scan took less than 30 seconds, I wish they scanned everyone when they came in to avoid wasting time, resources and energy in cases such as mine (not to mention the myriad unnecessary and excruciating VEs I had had which could have been avoided had they scanned me first).

sstewart2016 · 18/02/2016 13:17

I got examined at 11, I'm only 2cm WHAAAAAAAT?!!! Not sure how I'm meant to get to 10cm without dying. I was sent home at 12.30 but got to go back at 9pm to be induced as contractions have trailed off
At least I've got time to read up on what happens at an induction

OP posts:
WhoTheFuckIsSimon · 18/02/2016 13:20

Why are they inducing you? Are you overdue?

whatevva · 18/02/2016 13:23

Make the most of being at home with gentle pottering, relaxation, warm bath etc. Sometimes, it works better outside the hospital environment Wink

HighwayDragon1 · 18/02/2016 13:23

Get up and get moving have a bounce on a birthing ball and a good walk around.

CalliopeTorres · 18/02/2016 13:26

What a bizarre situation? Kept in hospital overnight when not in labour and then told to come back to be induced because contractions have tailed off at only 39 weeks? What kind of crazy hospital are you attending OP?

sstewart2016 · 18/02/2016 13:28

I'm 40 weeks tomorrow so not overdue no but incredibly fed up, I'm anemic and already had 2 blood transfusions and been in multiple times for hypermesis

OP posts:
WhoTheFuckIsSimon · 18/02/2016 13:34

Are you sure you want to be induced? Drips, monitors, etc?

whatevva · 18/02/2016 13:35

Anaemic with a new baby is not good. I would be preparing to make things as easy as possible for yourself when you come out of hospital.

MushroomMama · 18/02/2016 13:37

I had the same with number 2 it was a cock up from the word go!

Told them my waters were trickling out. No you've weed yourself erm no take a look oh so they are going!

Then I was on the wars in labour trying not to scream the place down until DH had a few very cross words with the midwives who conceded I was actually in labour and carted me off to a room!

Hope baby hurries up for you!
