Meningitis B Vaccine Petition

ElenaSummer · 16/02/2016 11:21

To ask you all to consider signing this Gov Petition ?

petition.parliament.uk/petitions/108072

I have young children and find it hard to believe this isn't being offered to all children .

I know the NHS is under alot of pressure however for those who cannot afford the private vaccine this should be given to all or offered at a reduced rate.

I'd like to see more statistics on the long term affects of the jab.

I have signed and shared on Facebook.

Does anyone know whether the children who have been very ill or sadly passed away recently from men C and men B had been given the vaccines? Does the vaccine completely prevent your DC from contracting the diseases?

1234Littleham · 24/02/2016 22:01

Nice to see more people signing on here.

Q. Will the vaccine offer total protection against meningitis to my child?
A. There are many different MenB strains. This vaccine has been developed to offer protection against as many as possible. Once it has been in use for some time, it will be possible to calculate the coverage and continue with vaccine research to improve the protection it gives. Other vaccines exist to protect against other types of meningitis and septicaemia, however, there is no vaccine to protect against all types, so remaining vigilant is vital.

It's too expensive to give to all under-12s - I mean, really expensive. And there simply isn't enough of it. You can't magic it out of thin air.

MaidOfStars · 25/02/2016 10:37

Sorry, obviously I sympathise with all those affected and I'd rather we didn't have to choose where to spend NHS money (why can't we just pay more in?). But we do.

Both NICE and reports in the BMJ have estimated that to be cost effective, in terms of quality of life years, the vaccine needs to be £9 per dose. It is not £9 per dose. To vaccinate to 12 years would cost over 1% of the total NHS budget.

I have followed your story, sugar, and I'm so sorry you lost your daughter.

1234Littleham · 25/02/2016 11:49

Shame you feel like that. I'd rather they factored in the huge cost of caring for children left disabled by Meningitis to the cost benefit analysis. Surely it is better to spend money on prevention?

I would expect the cost to come down the more people around the world are vaccinated and the more research goes into it. Maybe this won't be approved but at least it paves the way for a compromise.

Please take the time to read sugar's link (see above) as it explains that each child badly damaged by Men B takes over £3 miliion in care / lost earnings.

sugar21 · 25/02/2016 12:03

My costs to the NHS
Emergency care for my dd, but she could not be saved
Post Mortem
Ongoing bereavement counselling for both Parents
GP appointments x at least once a week
Subsidised anti depressants + lorazepam
Emergency care for myself after a suicide attempt
Alcoholic treatment for exdh + counselling + GP appointments

This Paralympic athlete makes some good points.

(Worth remembering that this petition will already have saved someones life by raising awareness of the symptoms) Lets hope they make a change even if it only a small one.

Iwonderif · 25/02/2016 15:03

Signed. Ive also shared the link with friends.

AdventureMathematical · 25/02/2016 15:26

This is now the most signed petition ever. If they ignore it then what is the point? Perhaps the money for the website and the continuing parliamentary debates would be better spent on vaccines.

I'd rather they factored in the huge cost of caring for children left disabled by Meningitis to the cost benefit analysis

The published literature on which that blog is based accounted for the economic cost of both immediate and long term care of those with mild to severe effects/disabilities.

We will continue to call for the adolescent carriage trial study recommended by the JCVI over a year ago to be undertaken. This study forms a critical part in the assessment and introduction of the MenB vaccine to the 2nd biggest at risk group.

We will continue to seek to influence the joint working group of the PHE, DoH, JCVI and NICE in how they evaluate meningitis vaccines from a cost effective perspective and to ensure that all costs, including the ongoing cost of treatment and support post infection, are taken into account.

MaidOfStars · 25/02/2016 16:55

That doesn't mean the costs haven't been taken into account previously. I think it's good that there are focus groups to keep a watchful eye on "authority". But I've read the paper - the ongoing health costs are there. Perhaps, in future, there may be unforeseen costs that are brought to light, by groups like Meningitis Now. But I broadly know how NICE/etc work (heck, I teach about the cost:benefit of various health initiatives) and the costs of ongoing disability are accounted for, where they are known (which will largely be the case here).

1234Littleham · 25/02/2016 17:10

Why did Steve Dayman (Head of Meningitis Now Charity) say on Radio 4 that all the ongoing health costs / other expenses not all taken into account?

Steve Dayman on Radio 4 (approx 5.40pm Monday 22nd February) Probably on catch up.

sugar21 · 25/02/2016 17:16

It is not pleasant watching your child die. All the equipment being used, the medics rushing around doing bloods and all the tests in the intensive care unit. If I had a lot of money I would pay for a lot of children to be vaccinated so they and their parents do not have to go through all that we did
How about Google et al stumping up more tax to go into the NHS or MPs not having a pay rise. I have e- mailed my MP several times about this subject and haven't even had an out of office reply.

annoyedofnorwich · 25/02/2016 18:13

What will the NHS cut funding for in order to afford it though? There's never enough money for everything, the line has to be drawn somewhere.

I've been able to pay for it privately. £95 a dose for 3 doses. They reckoned they pay £90 for it so only make £5 on each.

MaidOfStars · 25/02/2016 18:21

1234 I have no idea why he said that. I'll come back tomorrow with details of the paper (can't access now).
