AIBU to go to a hotel tonight as we have no heating

DP is responsible for ensuring we have gas for our large, old and fucking freezing house. It is already 2 degrees out there and dropping.

He tells me this morning that we have run out, completely, and gas is coming tomorrow 'sometime'.

We have a coal fire in two rooms - that's it. No electric heaters.

We have 2 older teen DCs one of whose BF's is coming over for them to cook a valentine meal - on what? The fucking coal fire? There is NO GAS so the cooker doesn't work. I can't even get a cup of fucking tea.

AIBU to want to fuck off to the nearest hotel with the DCs and send him the bill?

I have the complete opposite...live in a country inhabitable, without AC. 52 degrees in summer. When the AC has failed in the past, I have checked into a hotel with DD. YANBU.

buddhasbelly · 14/02/2016 18:10

oh and that was with 2 x electric heaters going as well, just a mix of high ceilings and old windows meant for a cold night

Aridane · 14/02/2016 18:11

Unless there is a huge back story, yABU

ilovesooty · 14/02/2016 18:13

I don't have central heating.
I grew up in a house with one coal fire.
I don't think one evening is much to worry about.

GirlOverboard · 14/02/2016 18:13

You're seriously considering spending the night in a hotel and then sending him the bill? You sound extremely spoiled. Just order a takeaway, wrap up warm and sit in front of the fire. I'm sure you'll survive for the night.

shutupandshop · 14/02/2016 18:15

We did this when we were on the 3rd day of no boiler, it was minus 7 and we had a baby. Go for it, if its too unbearable and you can afford it.

specialsubject · 14/02/2016 18:16

how strange not to have backups of a couple of electric heaters, and an electric kettle. Or even a camping stove.

suspect backstory here.

SmallGreenBouncyBall · 14/02/2016 18:16

yanbu especially if you don't have other means of heating/cooking.
maybe look into getting an electric heater/fan heater and electric kettle so you can at least keep one room warm and warm drinks and hot water for water bottles.

BabyGanoush · 14/02/2016 18:17

coal fire, takeaway and hot water bottles?

We've often done it, as this sort of stuff just happens.

hiddenhome2 · 14/02/2016 18:18

Dh tells me that, when he was a nipper, they lived in a big, old house with double glazing and they couldn't afford to put the central heating on. When he'd go up to bed, there'd be ice on the inside of his bedroom window.

Aye, thems were the days Grin

RaskolnikovsGarret · 14/02/2016 18:18

The four of us did this once - went to a five star hotel in London ShockBlush as our central heating had broken down. It was one of our best nights away, we had such fun. Wasteful and extravagant? Undoubtedly, but we have fond memories.

I hate the cold so would completely understand you all going to a hotel for the night. Good luck OP.

NorksAreMessy · 14/02/2016 18:18

We run out of oil on a frighteningly frequent basis
We sigh, roll our eyes at each other, light the logburner and hunker down.

Part of the vaguaries and joy of living in the middle of nowhere.
You will survive

tangerinesarenottheonlyfruit · 14/02/2016 18:21

"It was one of our best nights away, we had such fun. Wasteful and extravagant? Undoubtedly, but we have fond memories."

Exactly! As a permanent solution, that's a bad idea. Go buy some back up stuff so you're prepared for next time.

But if you can afford it, heck why not?! Make it a bit of fun. Or what's the point in having money?

Armi · 14/02/2016 18:24

My grandparents didn't get central heating until 1995. Coal fires are great. Hot water bottles in the beds before bedtime. Wrap up warm. Sit by the fire sipping red wine and order a take away. Sounds great.

Tomorrow morning will be the real challenge, but sleep with your dressing gown on top of the bedding, then you can put it straight on. You'll be fine once you're up.

Armi · 14/02/2016 18:26

Hang on. No electric kettle as back up?! Why?!?!

SmallGreenBouncyBall · 14/02/2016 18:27

how would you make a hot water bottle if you don't have means to warm up water

SpotOn · 14/02/2016 18:33

If you're going to a hotel, make sure it's a nice one, where you can get a decent cup of tea etc.

I think you need to buy a kettle, microwave and a couple of small heaters for emergencies.

Armi · 14/02/2016 18:36

I must be premenstrual. My reaction is no, you don't deserve a night in a hotel because neither of the adults in the household could be arsed to check and order the gas and you've had all bloody day to buy a ten quid kettle, as the gas ran out this morning.

Silvercatowner · 14/02/2016 18:37

How on earth did we manage in '62..... no central heating, foot long icicles, windows freezing on the inside....

MrsJayy · 14/02/2016 18:39

I lived in a council massionette in the 70s we had ice on the inside of the windows We must be dead hard you just slung on an extra blanket

NorksAreMessy · 14/02/2016 18:42

We can heat water on top of the logburner, and we have mulled wine on an open fire, but tea...tea has to be perfectly boiling. Time for herbal or coffee, or mulled wine

TheoriginalLEM · 14/02/2016 18:52

Well sometimes we have to manage with no heating because we can't afford to have it on, hotel not an option.

Tonight however we are snuggled in front of the log burner sticking two fingers up at british gas as it heats the house far nicer tahn their poxy gas anyway.

bakeoffcake · 14/02/2016 18:54

We have gas brought in and have never run out yet

Unless your H has done this before I think you're being a bit unreasonable. He didn't do it deliberately, did he?

Phalenopsisgirl · 14/02/2016 18:55

Lol ..... I think this depends on your financial situation, if you know he can afford it then go for it. IE if your large old house happens to be a 4 million country pile then why not.

Cabrinha · 14/02/2016 18:56

Ice inside the windows in the 90s here.
It doesn't sound the end of the world to me.
How can you bill your own husband anyway? Hmm

Backstory?
