AIBU to think our kids have been set up to fail?

There are heated conversations in Education about this but I really feel everyone should know what's happening - I have only been teaching primary for 5 years. However, for most of that I have taught Year Six. This week I came close to quitting a job I love and think I'm good at. This isn't about pay or conditions. This is about a system designed to make kids fail - the new 'expectations' for an 11 year old will ensure that most children this year will simply not reach them. They will be judged as 'working towards' ie. not good enough. AIBU to think this is going to be a national scandal this year?!! If your kids are in Y6, I am so so sorry. Sorry that they have been set up to fail, sorry that their lovely rich curriculum will be abandoned for a diet of SATS drilling and sorry that concerns for children's mental health have gone through the roof. This is happening right now people - in your kids' schools. AIBU to think something just has to give?!!!https://m.facebook.com/sharer.php?u=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.tes.com%2Fnews%2Fschool-news%2Fbreaking-views%2Fdear-nicky-morgan-a-talented-and-demand-teacher-has-resigned-she&sid=0&appid=966242223397117&referrer=sociallplugin&rdr

I would be a bit pissed off if called out on strike about this while the new GCSEs steam ahead unchallenged.

Feenie · 16/02/2016 21:19

A boycott is more likely, I think.

OhYouLuckyDuck · 16/02/2016 22:02

Fingers crossed!

Feenie · 16/02/2016 22:16

Well, working together would be a welcome first.

HarveySchlumpfenburger · 16/02/2016 22:16

Can they call a strike about this? I thought they could only call out a strike over pay and conditions.

Fingers x for a boycott though.

Feenie · 16/02/2016 22:23

The NAHT and the NUT did this in 2010. Also, part of the shamblolic introduction of the interim frameworks, and most recently the very late publication of exemplification materials will put an intolerable strain on workload.

Feenie · 16/02/2016 22:27

An important and unexplainable expected clarification in KS1 writing will mean some late reteaching in Y2 classrooms.

Feenie · 16/02/2016 22:28

Unexplainable expected = unexpected

leccybill · 16/02/2016 22:31

I would fully support a boycott. KS2 SATs prove nothing.

RosaDiazepam · 16/02/2016 22:34

I have a child in yr 6. Nothing has been mentioned to parents or children about SATS...other than they will be taking them.
No meetings, extra lessons. I've learnt about these things from MN
Confused

Feenie · 16/02/2016 22:40

Please throw in the six tests that every single Y2 child, regardless of ability, maturity or attainment in to that mix!

theluckiest · 16/02/2016 23:07

Rosa, no you probably wouldn't have heard about all the recent stuff because the shit has only just hit the fan!! As a y6 teacher, I only realised quite how dreadful the writing assessments are last week...we are now on half term so haven't had a chance to filter this all down to staff and parents yet.

Mind you, I didn't realise until today how fucking ridiculous the Y2 ones are either.

Looks like wheels are being set in motion though: www.tes.com/news/school-news/breaking-news/nut-calls-sats-be-suspended-after-widespread-criticism-new-assessment

As I said, all the unions, including the NAHT, are sitting down on Thursday to discuss joint action. Really hope they can agree on just that, would be so effective. Part of the unions' ineffectiveness in past years has been because they cannot usually agree.

theluckiest · 16/02/2016 23:20

Absolutely Feenie. Fingers crossed!! They clearly all already agree that this is an ocean-going, fur-lined fuckup so hopefully will take a unanimous action!

Glad the unions are striking on something that only affects teachers and not the new GcSE's which effect pupils - god forbid they would think of other people.

Feenie · 17/02/2016 00:21

Ignore.

theluckiest · 17/02/2016 00:34

Who said anything about striking Carol? Getting all militant?

Suspect a boycott may be on the cards anyway. You sound worried Carol, are you Nicky Morgan?

Nah, my money is on Logical Test - only teacher on MN to support new tests in their current format , supposed Maths specialist with no.idea of current or former Maths curriculum .

Feenie · 19/02/2016 15:20

The changes only shift the workload, they don't address it. None of the concerns about children are addressed. I hope this isn't the end of it.

RedRainRocks · 19/02/2016 17:39

Can someone please explain to me the purpose of the SAT's tests? Why does a Y2 child have to go through all of this ridiculous testing? To what end? It doesn't even evidence the standard of teaching in the school as at a recent parents evening we were told that it was practically impossible for a child to get above the "working to expected standard" at seven. They have been teaching to meet the SAT's since information on the requirements were released. My DD believes this is really important, and deapite getting 34/35 in the practice tests is almost paranoid about the one she got right, as she has to "hit all the criteria". It's awful! If we could remove our children from this, we would. I can't see it serves a purpose.

RedRainRocks · 19/02/2016 17:39

Typo-tastic. Apologies on phone :(

theluckiest · 19/02/2016 17:57

I completely agree - I have been so peeved about the Y6 fiasco that I have pushed to one side the fact that my 6 yr old Ds will be sitting SATS this year too...

We are currently reading Harry Potter. He has already told me that he found a fronted adverbial and could spot a subordinate clause. I would far rather he told me how the book made him feel, what the characters are thinking and what might happen next but hey, you can clearly see the impact of these curriculum changes!!

As far as I'm concerned SATS are a way for the Govmt to measure schools and a stick to beat them with. Teachers don't like them, they produce 'teaching to the test' shallow & easily forgotten learning and judging by another thread, many parents (myself included) think they are bollocks, create undue stress for staff and kids and produce a negligible impact on learning. But that's my opinion. Wink

Feenie, you're dead right - the change in date is something but it's a bit like sticking a small plaster onto an almighty haemorrhage...not actually tackling the main issue of impossible standards for most kids. Pah!

fronted adverbial

I went to a very trad primary school then a grammar school in the early 70s, speak two languages, and have a working knowing of three others - and I couldn't tell you what that is. Is "fronted" even a word? Confused
