Was out for dinner on Saturday night and paid in cash. Handed over $40, I think and the bill was $32.

Waitress asked if I wanted change which annoyed me a bit but then, when I said "yes" , she asked how much. I didn't like being put on the spot like that - was going to figure out a decent (but not 25% as it would have been if I had no change at all!) tip once I had the change.

So, am I an old fart or should she have just given me my change?!

Argh, can't type today! That should have said...

I Know it probably makes sense to hand over the payment + tip together but I'm just way too MC and can't bear to discuss the tip with the server so just like to leave it on the table and leg it! I do always tip well though!

Me and two girls went for dinner tonight in a reasonably posh pub restaurant. Think 13 quid for a burger. When she brought the bill, £78 quid something, shed also written underneath '£87.45' or whatever 10% on top would be.
We are all accountants, but not many people need to be told what 10% of anything is. I didn't think anything much of it, except how messy the bill now looked.
She brought the bill inside a little comnents book with her name on the front. And a pen. I wish now id written 'Dont assume i cant work out a rough ten percrnt' because i often overdo it... So 78 quid is 7.80, that's 85.80, oh 90 between three of us then, great.
In fact its now annoyed me a little bit. Might give them some feedback on that.

I lived in the US for a while, and the staff would always bring your change back to the table and then you could just leave what you wanted as your tip. One place I told the waitress that it was fine, keep the change, and she insisted on bringing it back to the table and said it was their policy to not collect the tips until the customer had left so that no one could claim that the staff had taken any money, I thought that was a good policy.
