Is it wrong for my 8 year old to say she needs a pee instead of a wee?

AIBU. My 8 year old has had some issues about using the toilet at school and the teachers and teaching assistants have been helping her with this.

She a attends a small rural first school (69 pupils) and is in a composite Year 1/Year 2 class.

The other morning in the playground the headmistress called me aside and said that they were trying to get my DD to ask for a wee instead of a pee.

I was slightly surprised as I did not really see any problem with this and when I spoke to my DD about it she said that they had told her that it was a bit of a rude word.

Generally the school is fantastic and very supportive and I am wondering if I am being a little over sensitive about this.

Any ideas?

I think pee or wee are fine and both the same where I live (Derbyshire) - but FFS don't say you need the bathroom. That's just silly. Grin

Lweji · 11/02/2016 17:26

Maybe:
"I'm going out now and will be back shortly"

If for a poo, then "I won't be back for some time"

Gypsy's kiss anyone?

Or maybe a 'Pony and Trap' or even a 'Tom Tit'

Myredcardigan · 11/02/2016 17:28

June, are you Irish yourself? Most Irish people I have met say pee rather than wee. DH is Scottish and he also says pee. Would you flinch if they said, wee? No difference at all IMO.

Jesabel · 11/02/2016 17:28

Pee or wee are both fine, but I would be encouraging a school age child to ask to go to the toilet rather than quibble over them.

BertieBotts · 11/02/2016 17:30

Okay okay. I concede that the English meaning of pee probably does come from piss.

But I still think that the North American one doesn't. If it does, then it's in a more roundabout way ie pissoir. And whether or not it does, it's used liberally in children's television and film which means that it is crossing the pond and today's children are likely to encounter it as a perfectly ordinary word, not as something offensive.

My dad taught my sister to say "I need a constitutional" when she was about 3. This caused much mirth when she went to nursery school.

Off for a Lillian Gish

Gottagetmoving · 11/02/2016 17:49

We say wee. I think people think pee is rude because it is an abbreviation of Piss?
I don't know anyone close to me who says pee.

I teach in an International School outside the UK.

Most students use the (US?) euphemism 'bathroom' when they need to use the loo.

Every time a student asks 'Can I use the bathroom?' I cannot help but reply 'Why? do you need a bath?'

I need to grow up I suppose

JessieMcJessie · 11/02/2016 17:52

Does nobody say "weewee"? I'm starting to think my Mum made it up!

lookoutitsapiano · 11/02/2016 17:56

I'd be teaching her to ask for a slash just to piss off the prissy teacher! How ridiculous, YANBU

crookedhooker · 11/02/2016 18:04

We do Jessie Grin

ootsideinbacktaefront · 11/02/2016 18:20

Oh yes Jessie, good and Scottish Grin

I live in America. My friend takes her labradoodle out to 'use the restroom' and was surprised when I laughed at her.

ManneryTowers · 11/02/2016 18:27

Peepee or weewee here (well, the two year old). And fart is a rude word.

Outfoxed · 11/02/2016 19:13

For a while my brothers and I took to saying "going for a whiz/ to the whizzatorium" ...Drove my mother insane so we escalated it to goi for a slash, then whizzatorium didn't seem so bad...

goshnotme · 11/02/2016 19:20

I don't think it's polite to say exactly why one needs the loo. Just say "Can I go to the loo?"

After all, if one says "I need a pee", does one also say "I need a poo"?

TheCatsMeow · 11/02/2016 20:26

And fart is a rude word.

So what do you call it?

dementedpixie · 11/02/2016 20:44

Pump?

mygrandchildrenrock · 11/02/2016 20:55

Trump

StarkyTheDirewolf · 11/02/2016 21:00

Bum laugh.

Catsize · 11/02/2016 21:34

Don't like 'pee', don't like 'fart'. Pee is very American but has always thought of as a little coarse around these 'ere parts.

Can I say 'parts' in this context? Blush

Kpo58 · 11/02/2016 21:48

If "Pee" is a rude word, then how do they ever get through saying the letters of the alphabet? Confused

StrapOnDodo · 12/02/2016 07:54

When the dcs were little still do it now I would shout

'Loos and shoes' when it was time to go anywhere

I suppose it could have been 'Loos and poos' Smile
