It's a revelation!

I'm a convert and am spending 2-3 hours a night decluttering, thanking things for their use and their service, and binning them letting them go.

It's so utterly freeing and pleasing.

I've hated my house and it's complete inability to be clean and tidy for YEARS and this is making me think I can actually live somewhere peaceful and lovely.

""Some of it was Xmas and birthdays for the DCs, but even there I've tried to cut back on the pointless tat (they all moaned that Santa had given them lame stockings this year as I didn't fill them with total crap!)""

That's the bit that's difficult. Close family have accepted that I'd rather pick something and they club together, or they pay for an outing. But when I told wider family that I don't want to give and receive stuff, there have been issues. Likewise in work, when I don't want to get involved with the Secret Santa etc.

My friends agreed years ago that we would forgo gifts and make the time and spend the money on a meal/day/night out, instead.

It does free up your money and it makes you think about doing, rather than, buying stuff.

I can imagine this being useful for clothes shopping...I generally hate clothes shopping because I get hung up on how shit I look in everything...I think if I focussed on 'does this spark joy?' I would re engage with clothes as something I should like as a positive rather than choosing the clothes that I feel I look least shit in which is definitely a negative.

thebestfurchinchilla · 17/02/2016 08:14

Read the whole book last night. Got the week off. Up at 6.30 and stated already. I'm looking at things and thinking 'Why am I keeping this?' The book was a bit weird in places, like thanking my clothes at the end of a working day but most of it was obvious but sometimes you need that pointing out!

BeyondBootcampsAgain · 17/02/2016 08:27

I am one, lovely though i'm lurking as i'm doing my own version :)

thebestfurchinchilla · 17/02/2016 09:51

Ok I am enjoying myself so much! It feels so good to know that what is in my cupboards and drawers is either needed or wanted. I'm quite good at clearing out and donating to charity on a fairly regular basis but that's normally children's clothes and toys etc. I am not quite sticking to the category thing but tackling drawers and cupboards today oh and shelves too. Will be so much easier to clean.

FirstWeTakeManhattan · 17/02/2016 09:53

My book is arriving today. I can't wait!

thebestfurchinchilla · 17/02/2016 13:23

I'm like a woman possessed! The advice/idea I like is the using of boxes within cupboards and drawers. I do this in the kitchen already but applied it to my bedside drawer and underwear drawer this morning. No more feeling around for stuff. Old smart phone boxes are coming in very handy as are shoe boxes. I have so much stuff bagged up for the charity shop and for the bin and loads in the recycling. I didn't realise I had 6 unused note books!!!! I probably would've bought another. It feels so good. Grin

My 12 yr old DD just started on her bedroom without a word from me!! It's contagious.

I have had the book on my kindle for a while. I am getting ready to move house and desperately need to declutter. I read this thread this morning, revisited the book and have finally got started. I made a list of everything that needed sorting by category i.e.; dvd's, books etc rather than by room a have got loads done. Now I just need to go to the tip, the charity shop and list of freegle.
Still got a long way to go but feels great to have made a dent in it.
I hope I carry it on in New house.

thebestfurchinchilla · 17/02/2016 18:40

Me too. I am exhausted! Got so much done today and found I could get more clothes put away when folding/rolling. Much less in ironing limbo now.Took bags to the charity shop but tip was closed so will do tomorrow. Got one more cupboard to do tomorrow. I feel like a weight has been lifted.

thebestfurchinchilla · 17/02/2016 18:41

Converted.

EmGee · 17/02/2016 20:04

Debating on whether or not to get this book. I have been quite good at decluttering for the last few years so my house/wardrobe is not chocablock full of things. If anything I can be a bit too ruthless.

However I like the idea of becoming less consumerist.

Should I get the Kindle version or is the book version better (e.g. you flick back and forth between chapters)? I'm not very good at doing this on Kindle but I like the idea of having one less book on the shelf!!

Doilooklikeatourist · 17/02/2016 20:52

I just started doing this , the book is arriving tomorrow. I found youtube very helpful

I thought I decluttered my chest of drawers a couple of weeks ago , I have just redone my Tshirt drawer , and rolled and sorted and another bin bag full to the clothing bank

Why was I keeping polo shirts from a previous job , and a Pringle golf shirt that my much loved and sadly no longer here Mum wore ???

Got rid of year before last white T shirts

I will move onto the undies drawer tomorrow...

thebestfurchinchilla · 17/02/2016 21:29

EmGee I have nearly read the whole book and it only arrived yesterday. The text is spread out and got through it quickly. I thought i was pretty good at decluttering but there's something about seeing it in black and white. Have realised that the new wardrobes we thought we needed are now not necessary. What a saving! It's also really made me think that I don't need to buy new stuff. Just how many stripey Breton tops does one girl need? Not 10 that's for sure! How many tea light holders does one household need? Honestly I didn't have 22

Charley50 · 17/02/2016 21:41

I've been decluttering lately but I always get stuck on clothes and keep things I never wear. Since reading this thread today I've ordered the book and filled two bin liners of my clothes for the charity shop. While drinking a Red Stripe. Thanks OP! Cheers!

Girlfriend36 · 17/02/2016 22:10

Disclaimer have not read the book! Have however read the other Kondo thread and this one Grin

How does it work with kids toys and all their crap ? I think I am quite good at getting rid of stuff and go through my clothes etc fairly regularly but come unstuck with dds stuff.

I also have things in the cupboards that spark no joy but I keep as they have a practical purpose. I could go through books and dvds again I suppose but then wonder if I will just end up with a load of empty shelves Grinm

NHSisfubar · 17/02/2016 23:26

I have always been notoriously untidy with clothes. It caused major issues in my last relationship! I'm so much happier now; my drawers are so neat and I can see and find everything at a glance. I did my clothes about 2 months ago and it was so well packed in drawers that when we recently moved I carried drawers up stairs tilted totally on their sides and nothing moved. DP has also done all of his drawers after initially poo pooing it and saying I'd never keep it that way for long. Looking forward to doing my work stuff once I get cupboards in!

Gaelforce · 18/02/2016 00:30

I did a massive clear out and decluttered clothes and other mounds of stuff in teens' bedrooms and my own and throughout the house.
The only part where I have stalled is books. I can't seem to let go.
Has anyone successfully carried out a book cull?

shovetheholly · 18/02/2016 08:48

I am working through my whole house. Folding clothes her way has allowed me to fit everything properly in the drawers, and I can actually see exactly what I've got instead of having stuff buried underneath other stuff.

This is going to sound silly, but working through bit by bit makes me feel I can do other things in my life too. I can't really explain it - it's not like I have had a sudden surge of confidence or anything like that - but I do feel able to say to myself 'Perhaps I can eat more healthily and perhaps I can look after myself more'. I don't know why it's having this effect.

MamaLazarou · 18/02/2016 08:57

I've started the book, thanks to this thread, and have started by Kondo-ing a couple of drawers - they look beautiful! But when it comes to my wardrobe, very few items actually 'spark joy'. If I kondo'd the lot, I would literally have nothing to wear. I can't afford to replace everything (nor would I want to, since I hate shopping). What have others done in this situation?

shovetheholly · 18/02/2016 09:05

Mama - I am in the same boat. So many clothes I just hate.

I made a pile of gorgeous clothes that no longer fit. I folded them and boxed them up in a high wardrobe. Because I WILL get back into them!

I then worked out what 'sparked rage' - clothes I absolutely loathed. And got rid of those first. When you start thinking about it, even though you hate everything, there are stand-out items that are particular symbols of dreadfulness!

I then picked out four outfits that are OK. I'm finding that's actually plenty to get me through a week. And I made a pile of practical stuff: neutral coloured cardigans, for example, that go with lots of different outfits and folded those up.

I then worked through the 'meh' remainder, and it became easier to figure out because the pile was smaller and I had a sense of 'core' outfits.

And I bought a diet book. Smile

I have been an addict to KonMari since the book was first out on Amazon (stumbled across by accident only) and have been telling people who all told me I was insane. Now it is mainstream and for once I have been a trendsetter. It is fantastic. I have been a bit of a hoarder and now even when I buy new things, I think whether it will spark joy and be one of my favourites or just "stuff". Excellent book.

PeggyBlomquist · 18/02/2016 10:47

Gael, when I did our books it was the hardest part. I pulled every book off tje shelves and onto the livjng room floor. I split them into three piles to keep : books I hadn't read, books I reread all the time and books I wanted to keep for dd in the future. After that I lovingly arranged all those on the bookshelves. Then I got rid of the other ten couple of bookshelves. Once I could see the room looking lovely and spacious it was easier to bag the rest and send them off. I don't regret it because I have a kindle to re download onto if necessary
