To adopt a cat (again)?

I adopted a cat last year from a rescue centre but had to take her back as (I thought) dd had an allergic reaction to her. I panicked. Dd's illmess had nothing to do with the cat in the end.

I've been thinking about her every day since and really want her back. Would it be unfair on the cat if I brought her home again?

Ok so she's sat on my lap and I was stroking her. Out of nowhere she bit me! Is that normal??

Yes that's normal. She'll probably be a bit discombobulated from the move. Also it will take some time for you to attune to her body language and when she's had enough of stroking. My cat bites me on occasion but I can usually anticipate it.

She looks lovely and how lucky that she got a second chance!

thehillshaveyes · 15/02/2016 13:15

Yeah I think she'd had enough of being stroked and just wanted to sleep on my lap without being touched. I didn't take the hint and carried on! I'll try and read the signals better in future Smile

We have been adopted by a black cat who is blind in one eye! Found out the owner used to be the daughter of my parents next door neighbour . They tried to take him home but he attacked their puppy and was swiftly returned to us the same day! So glad he's here with us! The house felt empty for the whole 2hours he was gone!

OTheHugeManatee · 15/02/2016 13:29

I love a happy cat rescue ending Grin

So glad your puss is home safe, OP.

Gatekeeper · 15/02/2016 13:40

ohh- she's beautiful Smile. Our 'happy ending' boy has been with us a few months now and I can't imagine life without him. He is currently snoring on my chair and his paws smell like digestive biscuits

blankmind · 15/02/2016 13:57

Fabulous to see her so settled with you Smile

They do bite when they've had enough of being stroked, usually it's just a warning nip and they often hold on for a couple of seconds but it doesn't break the skin.

If you stroke near the tummy when they are not in the mood, (they can lie invitingly with an exposed tummy that looks like a please stroke my tummy now invitation, mostly it's not!) they can curl up in a millisecond, grab you with their paws and nip, then push with their back claws extended. Remove your hand as gently as you can, otherwise you'll get scratched. I think one of the Simon's Cat cartoons has this in it, it's very common behaviour.

One of ours loves to jump onto my shoulder from the ground. Lovely if I'm wearing a thick fleece, not so great for me in a sleeveless top. I just put a drop of neat Lavender essential oil on any scratches and so far have had no infections. It stings at first.

Another one of mine will nip my feet or ankles when she's hungry, just once, it's a throwback to what they do to their mum as tiny kits, same as the paddling with paws and suckling on a jumper.

I'm sure you'll get used to her little ways, she's adorable.

Gabilan · 15/02/2016 18:15

One of mine holds my hand in her mouth if I'm slow getting their breakfast. Otherwise I find backing off before they drop hints stops you getting bitten. They became tame because I let them come to me in their own time.

thehillshaveyes · 15/02/2016 20:43

She keeps coming up to me and sitting on me or snuggling next to me. Is it best to just ignore her (in a non neglectful way!) until she's settled?

Gabilan · 15/02/2016 21:10

If she's happy and quiet sitting with you, I'd leave her alone. Black cat will spend hours like that. Grey cat doesn't often get on my lap but rubs and purrs when she does, so I stroke her. Both of them get tense if touched when they don't want to be, but it is quite subtle.

Wolfiefan · 15/02/2016 21:11

She's training you!
Grin

Gabilan · 15/02/2016 21:15

Oh mine have me fully trained. But they're currently prewarming the bed for me, so I'm happy.

thehillshaveyes · 15/02/2016 21:15

It feels that way Wolfie Grin she's definitely the boss.

That's totally normal cat behaviour. Slaves must learn to know their place!

I can't feel my legs and really need to go to the toilet but how can I disturb her when she looks so cute?!

Have you managed to move yet? I'm just weighing up whether getting pudding is worth disturbing the cat for. She's all snuggly and warm and happy.

timtam23 · 17/02/2016 21:20

Aww I remember your other thread from when you first adopted her. So pleased to see a happy ending! Come over to the Litter Tray board and tell us all about her!
