To wonder what opinions we have now that will be really unpopular in 40/50 years

Not a TAAT but triggered by a thread about some elderly people having opinions that we find quite shocking and offensive now.

What opinions do you think we have that will have our grandchildren and great grandchildren gasping and pearl clutching? :)

There'll be a whole new swathe of words that are politically incorrect, e.g. 'loon' (derived from 'lunatic' therefore cruel to those with mental health issues) and 'hysterical' (discriminating against women).

Probably a whole load of words yet to be invented will also fall into this classification, e.g. 'immi' (short for immigrant) will be an insult at the level of today's N-word.

Yy othehugemanatee - I could actually predict what topics certain posters would bring up. However, I do think more power to them for being passionate about their subject.

I think hope that the next generation will be more tolerant than ours. But I wonder if certain issues will become more polarised.

AbbyCadabby · 03/02/2016 18:35

Suzanne, they said the same about cigarettes. Yes, people are still smoking, but the majority see it on its way out.

Sparklingbrook · 03/02/2016 18:35

I don't think we will be talking about 1D any more. Struggling to think of any musicians/artists out now we might still think are great in 40/50 year's time

Sparklingbrook · 03/02/2016 18:36

But TBF do any of us have the opinion 1D are great now? Grin

FuckYouChrisAndThatHorse · 03/02/2016 18:42

People will be appalled that driving was ever left to the judgement of the individuals, as self-driving cars become the norm, and human driving is outlawed.

I think they will be appalled that there is not only no 100% reliable contraception for women, but that some women don't have access to it at all.

Abortion would only become a thing of the past if contraception were entirely under the individual's control at all times.

I think that they'd be appalled at the way women don't have a say over their own bodies.

CremeEggThief · 03/02/2016 18:42

I am vegetarian, but I don't think everyone will be in 40 years, although I agree people will consume less meat.

Palomb · 03/02/2016 18:43

The kardiashians

toffeeboffin · 03/02/2016 18:56

I do think certain conditions will also just become 'lifestyle' choices such as anorexia, alcoholism, rather than something to 'treat'.

toffeeboffin · 03/02/2016 18:57

'People will be appalled that driving was ever left to the judgement of the individuals, as self-driving cars become the norm, and human driving is outlawed.'

YES YES YES!

ClashCityRocker · 03/02/2016 18:58

So far as I can see, the non-vegans are not particularly rife with diseases.

I think we will maybe eat less meat - although I'm not sure if my view on this is coloured by MN where people seem much more open to eating vegetarian a couple of nights a week. I don't know anyone who does this in real life - well, not as a conscious effort anyway.

There will be better vegetarian options in restaurants though.

toffeeboffin · 03/02/2016 19:00

Also think Merkel's recent decisions will go down as some of the worst in history.

Neo-nazism will have peaked and died again. As will extreme Islam.

Then in another 20 years i.e. 2080 the whole process will begin again.

TeaT1me · 03/02/2016 19:03

Gosh I hope anorexia, alcoholism etc aren't seen as lifestyle choices in the future. There's already too much of that. I really hope there will be a better mental health system and a more holistic view.

Given the way it's going maybe not.

vEGANvERA · 03/02/2016 19:03

runs in high fives ABBUCADABBY and runs out again

:)

Sparklingbrook · 03/02/2016 19:05

Oh no. Has high fiving started? Sad

ClashCityRocker · 03/02/2016 19:06

I'm not convinced smoking is on its way out either.

I think numbers stopping will plateau and there will remain a section of society who smoke.

It's an attitude thing; plenty of people are aware of the risks of smoking, obesity, drugs, alcohol - and go on and do them anyway .

Which is why I don't think, even if studies did show an increased risk of xyz, people would stop eating meat.

bumbleymummy · 03/02/2016 19:08

I wonder if we'll drink as much as we do now...

suzanne cultured meat was predicted back in 1952 in The Space Merchants. It was called Chicken Little.

WhatALoadOfOldBollocks · 03/02/2016 19:11

Male circumcision will be illegal in the UK unless for medical reasons

Refined sugar will be seen as disgusting as smoking is today, and people will silently tutt those who put loads of sugar in their coffee.

Shaved pubic hair will become unpopular. Women will wonder why they ever endured the pain of waxing and lazering such a delicate area.

There will be more vegetarian and vegan options on mainstream menus as people cut back on meat and try meat-free meals more often.

ClashCityRocker · 03/02/2016 19:14

I wonder what the baby name threads will look like in fifty years time...

IoraRua · 03/02/2016 19:16

The hostility towards trans people will be viewed with disgust, I think.
Recycling etc will be huge and the abundance of packaging, long haul flights will be baffling to people.
Royal families will be hugely outdated and unpopular.
We will probably have more problems with radicalisation - more terror attacks, I think they'll be shocked we didn't focus more on integration.

Catsize · 03/02/2016 19:17

That toothbrushes are a good idea and swimming pools are lovely.

ClashCityRocker · 03/02/2016 19:18

I think alcohol use will decrease and recreational drug use will become more socially acceptable.

IoraRua · 03/02/2016 19:18

And in fifty years time names like Sue, Maura, Gerry and Trevor will top the BabyNames forum Grin

Imogen, Ivy, Theo and Sebastian etc will all seem incredibly dull and middle aged....couldn't see them on a baby! Wink

AbbyCadabby · 03/02/2016 19:26

clash, "So far as I can see, the non-vegans are not particularly rife with diseases" - no NHS waiting lists, are there?
