To ask you to explain to me why real fur is bad?

I would never wear real fur. Even faux fur doesn't float my boat.

However I want to know why it's bad. Is it solely animals being killed for their fur or are there any other reasons?

Reason I ask is because I overheard a conversation when I picked my daughter up from nursery earlier. To cut a long story short a woman asked the other woman if the coat was 'real', and apparently it was.

I will give it all a good Google to educate myself but I know I can count on MN to giving to me straight.

Thanks in advance and I know I sound ignorant.

I cant read that Maisie. Animal cruelty of any kind upsets me. But I dont know how anyone who does think fur is acceptable could read that and not
change their mind.

Just out of curiosity Crispbutty but are you vegan?

slow electrocution makes the fur stand on end nicely

What? Forever? I must remember that when I get my next blow dry.

Electrocution is not slow. However, it can result in burning, which isn't what fur farmers want.

It also seems a bit labour intensive to grab a mink, which is a very lively and aggressive animal, and try to insert an electrode up its bum while avoiding being bitten and moving on to the next one.

I'd think it is probably more convenient to keep them in individual cages and gas them in their room.

Not nice. But not quite as emotive and not a great deal different to slaughtering other animals that we want to use for food or medical research.

Im not vegan no, not even vegetarian, but I do care very much about animal welfare and am very conscious of what meat I eat, and its provenance wherever I can check it.

crispbutty the Compassion in World a Farming website is a good one to look at. Don't worry, it's not gory, it's aimed at people like yourself who are meat eaters but who care about where their food comes from, the welfare during rearing and kinder slaughter methods. It's worth taking a look.
