Getting married in June - AIBU in thinking I can lose 2 and a bit stones in time

I got engaged earlier this month and my fiance and I have now booked our wedding for June.

I would love to look great on my wedding day and I want to lose a tad over a couple of stones.

Losing weight before I find the 1st stone comes off quite easily and the weight loss then slows down. Is 2 stone feasible before June.

I am a 14 bordering on 16 and I want to get back to a 12.

Cheers.

I'm quite sure you can- especially if sustaining it isn't the main issue as your main goal is to look slim for your wedding.

Insanity/low-carb/intermittent fasting/30 day shred will all give good results if you stick to it short-term.

jevoudrais · 27/01/2016 20:47

Whilst you might be able to lose the weight, how confident are you that you can find a dress you like and get it altered even though your shape is going to change a fair bit?

Bear in mind that if you go for a new dress as opposed to second hand, they are usually made over a few months (my friend's took six) and then altered, so that doesn't leave you much time for June. My dress is a sample one (so people tried it on in the shop, but it isn't waiting to be made, I have it already) and my wedding isn't until September. I was advised by lots of shops that I was going to have to find something by March to guarantee having it and having time for it to be altered properly.

I am getting married in April and wanted to lose just over a stone (from Jan) so if I can do it so can you! I lost 7lbs in the first two weeks doing atkins, it's the only thing that works for me as it kills your appetite so you don't WANT to eat very much, after the first few days. Don't worry about fat content, just limit your carbs. You do have to be very strict the first two weeks, but you shouldn't go hungry.

My only problem is that I need to tone up as I lose weight and am struggling to motivate myself to go to the gym. I've made a pact with myself not to eat high carb foods (bread/pasta/potatoes etc) before the wedding so with any luck I should lose it and keep it off.

If you've struggled with calorie counting/low fat diets in the past give this a try!

The guy who invented 5:2 was on women's hour this week talking about his new diet. It's an 8 week 800 calorie a day thing that's mostly aimed at lowering blood sugar levels for those at risk of diabetes, that being said, average weight loss in 8 weeks was 2 stone (as it jeffing should be for 8 weeks at &00 calories).

It'd be tough (I couldn't do it) as it's just short of a VLCD (very low Codie diet - these need / should have close supervision).

Might be worth looking into if you can bear the thought of 2 months of deprivation ... Apparently you adjust!!!

Good luck

I lost 2 stone in just under 3 months. Im a lazy slob at the best of times so if I can do it Im thinking most people can. No gym. I cut out all white foods so had veg with meals. Used a little healthy eating sauce on veg to make it more interesting, & if I was having a serious carb crave would have 2 small yorkshire puddings with meal, occasionally. Home exercise - mini trampoline. Also used trampoline to do "step ups". Kettlebells (I firmly believe these are the stuff of miracles!). Dumbells when I was sitting on my backside watching tv. Id walk into town on errands roughly 3 times weekly, 15 minutes each way brisk walk. Re home exercise none of it involved long exercise sessions as I knew Id get bored, so normally 15 mins, and then later in the evening same thing but 10 mins.

The low carbs and exercise are the only things that have worked for me. Im not good with food when I have to think about it too much so cutting out white foods fitted in with that, also home exercise - not having to think of gym outfit, leave the house etc. Im not so strict with it all now but when I put on a little weight I don't worry as a month of no carbs etc sorts it out. Wish Id discovered this way years ago. Good luck OP, you've enough time to hit your target

I wouldn't call it easy. I think you have to be pretty motivated to lose 2 stone in 5 months as you can't afford to slack. However, if you're prepared to work hard, eat well and not drink alcohol, it's more than doable.

Baconyum · 28/01/2016 02:53

Used to work in wedding industry.

I think it's unrealistic.

If you're having a traditional white wedding you've only got 5 months to plan it (well 4 really) which means you are going to be very busy online and on the phone getting things organised.

If you're ordering the dress it needs to be ordered now and shoes and underwear as they all affect the fitting. The first fitting needsnto be at least 8 weeks before the wedding and last no later than 4 weeks before. In addition dresses can't usually be taken in by more than 3 sizes (traditional ballgown styles) but if a more fitted design no more than 2 sizes.

Assuming you're getting married middle June that means you've 10 weeks to lose the weight - and plan everything.

Frankly this is why most people allow 1-2 years from engagement to wedding date now. That and the difficulties of getting venues, caterers, entertainment, florists etc especially as June is the most popular month for weddings.

Have you got your venues booked?

Baconyum · 28/01/2016 03:00

Sorry very negative post of mine.

To redress the balance, there are a huge number of different designs and colours available now. Traditional styles actually look better on more curvaceous brides. A good boutique will help you find the right dress. Don't go in with a set idea in mind, they know the dresses and which body shapes they suit very well (and by body shapes I mean frame not size. Height and colouring are also factors of course).

I'd recommend boutiques rather than department stores as staff can advise you much better.

Also don't have just anyone alter your dress. Silk and organza are particularly tricky to work with and need expert handling. This is not an area to skimp on as it could easily end up costing you the price of 2 dresses.

Lighthouse ah thanks, I have put on about half a stone since we have been together. He thinks I am fine as I am but I know I am overweight and I want to look as good as I can on my Wedding Day for me. I want to love our wedding photos rather than cringe at how I look.

Cheers for the advice. I need to lose the weight sooner rather than later methinks cos of the dress. I am very laid back about all the planning but I am now having a panic about the dress!

Exercise DVDs are not an activity I see myself doing but I am going to go swimming twice as often, go back to yoga and walk to work (a good mile plus) when weather and time allows. I have started doing 50 sit ups a day too and want to build it up to 100.

One of my bridesmaid's used to walk a lot so we are going to take it up if it ever stops raining

Here cheers one of my Bridesmaid's did the Cambridge plan. I will see how I get on the next month eating less and exercising more and perhaps give it a go if I am not managing to lose enough weight.

MNetter yes I want a traditional wedding dress. I think I need to be buying it sooner rather than later. I had no idea it took so long!

Well done to all of you BTW.

I went up to a size 12 at uni and lost the weight via counting calories on myfitnesspal. Currently maintain a size 8 (and getting last few lbs off for my own wedding in December) via slimming world and c25k. I thinks it's doable :) good luck!

SquirrelledAway · 30/01/2016 12:20

I recommend the Jillian Michaels 30 Day Shred for toning up - 20 minutes a day for 30 days and it will make a big difference to your shape. You sound pretty motivated, so a good eating plan (I did 5:2), swimming and walking or jogging plus HIIT like the 30 Day Shred should see the pounds dropping off.

WithYourKissMyLifeBegins · 30/01/2016 12:25

Jev I am flapping a tad about the dress now. I had no idea these things took so long! Good luck with your wedding arrangements too.

Maggie cheers and good luck too. I tried Atkins years ago and only lasted a few days on it.

Depends how you do it.

A fad diet will yield fast but unsustainable results. I'd maybe try a sensible diet with a detox in the last month? Depending on when you are getting your dress.

I want to lose just over 1.5 stone in 16 weeks and I don't think that will be doable for me (I think 1lb a week with the odd week of no loss is how my body works) so in reckon I'd be able to shift a stone by mid May.

You've got plenty of time.

I lost five stone Feb-October, last year.

I used MFP, a cheap version of a Fitbit and I went the gym, but had hand weights and a kettle ball at home, for when I couldn't make it.

I had back/under bra fat to shift, so I Youtubed hand weight exercises.

You'll drop weight at the start, then 1-2 lb a week is healthy, but with toning exercise, cuting down on wheat, you'll see the equivalent of a higher weight loss iyswim.

So totally doable, I still had a glass of wine, Black Tower do a 55 calories a glass, I swapped crisps for chopped up peppers and humous.

Your Skin/hair will look better as well.

Birdsgottafly · 30/01/2016 12:42

I've just read, through the thread.

Personally I wouldn't do a short term diet plan.

Keep a food diary, see what's causing the weight.

Then go onto MFP to see how many calories you should be eating, don't drop below 1200 (that's with exercise).

Then you can choose the odd day to exercise a lot and eat the calories, you will still lose weight.

antimatter · 30/01/2016 12:42

Low carbing is much less restrictive than Atkins.

nulgirl · 30/01/2016 12:43

Definitely doable if you can sort out the dress. I was a size bigger than you but have lost a stone since Christmas by healthy eating and doing plenty of walking. I haven't been starving myself or doing low carb as I hate that so its not sustainable.

Planning to lose another couple of stone before we go on holiday in July and am confident that I can easily get there.

Birdsgottafly · 30/01/2016 12:44

MFP is great because it tells you "if you stick to this way of eating, you will weight ... In so many weeks".

WithYourKissMyLifeBegins · 30/01/2016 12:46

Bacon very useful thanks. We are having a traditional white wedding. We have booked the venue. I can see now why people have a longer engagement.

I know the style of dress I want and I am fairly set on it. I am going to make appointments next week.

Get Michael Moseleys Blood Sugar Diet. 8 week plan. So far I've done 4 days and have already lost loads. It's retraining your palate and preparation. That's it as far as I can see.
