...to be amazed at this man making a fuss over 50p?

So, I just ordered a Chinese takeaway for one on Just Eat, with free delivery, above the minimum spend. After paying, the owner of the restaurant phoned me and said I was a long way away (I'm not) and could I pay an extra 50p? I said yes of course and put the phone down, a little surprised. I presumed they'd amend the card payment.
An hour later, he turns up and I take the food. He stands there and says nothing but "50p!" with his hand held out. I went and found my purse and got out a 50p piece and took it back to him.
AIBU to think that this was out of order and a little bit odd for him to bother embarrassing us both for 50p?

I thought it was embarrassing for him to insist on an extra 50p. I know that if I was delivering the food I couldn't do it, I'd just let it go.

The outlet should have just said. Sorry but we don't deliver that far, Instead of advertising as free delivery. Then going on to charge you 50p, so its clearly not free is it. Misleading info there. I would say. If they tried that on with every one. It would soon mount up.

I always tip the driver £1 so they'd have been 50p down if they did this to me.

He asked if you paid the extra 50p after card payment. You said yes- I would have just taken it to the door when I opened it to be honest. He probable felt you had gone back on your word having to ask again

Plus he was just driver not owner most likely so if he hadn't have asked would come off his wages. That would soon add up

I doubt the person who delivered your food was the owner, probably he was told to get the 50p so what else could he do? They wouldn't be able to change the card payment that easily if they had already processed it.

Well, you either agree to the terms (extra 50p) or don't. Your choice. You chose to agree. I would have told them to fuck off or deliver for the original price. When he got to the door was not the time to negotiate!

Plus I'm sad so just worked out mim wage is £7 h. So that's 11p minute. If you are just few streets out of zone and it takes them 2min to get to you and 2m to get back that's cost them extra 44p. So 50p sounds fair. need a life

I'm guessing that they don't pay their delivery drivers but have them depend on tips and the driver said they wouldn't go unless they were promised a tip. A lot of takeaways are upfront that a delivery fee of £x must be paid in cash to the driver. It's often a way of people getting around restrictions on what/how/when they are allowed to work legally. I live in a Uni city and I know a lot of international students do that so they can work above the official hours on their visas. It's exploitative really.

Takeaways have always been notorious for being part of the black economy, especially as because until recently a lot of their business was done in cash on the door step service and kitchen staff were frequently paid in cash off the books too. Now the internet based ordering systems have moved towards card payments these staff seem to have moved towards driving hence often cash payments requested for delivery.

I just looked at the reviews (maybe a little late!) and others are complaining about the fact that they phone for extra delivery money after the order is taken. I also noticed that £2 for delivery was actually paid by me for the order in the first place.

Give them a bad review and alert Just Eat. I'm pretty sure they don't want this kind of crap. If you've already paid £2 for the delivery, they shouldn't be asking for more.

My student DS has delivered pizza on his push bike. He got £7 per hour, plus £1 per delivery, plus tips.

Made me feel a bit guilty to be honest because I never tip takeaway delivery.

If you ordered on JustEat then log it with them and leave a review. They should be including all the costs up front on the JustEat website, not tagging things on after. For one thing, JE won't be getting their percentage of these extra dribs and drabs of money, however small. And it's poor customer service to ask for extra money after you've been charged.

Is tipping takeaway delivery drivers the done thing? I don't eat takeaways so I've no idea.
