AIBU?

...to be amazed at this man making a fuss over 50p?

So, I just ordered a Chinese takeaway for one on Just Eat, with free delivery, above the minimum spend. After paying, the owner of the restaurant phoned me and said I was a long way away (I'm not) and could I pay an extra 50p? I said yes of course and put the phone down, a little surprised. I presumed they'd amend the card payment.
An hour later, he turns up and I take the food. He stands there and says nothing but "50p!" with his hand held out. I went and found my purse and got out a 50p piece and took it back to him.
AIBU to think that this was out of order and a little bit odd for him to bother embarrassing us both for 50p?

Weird - but check out the John Lewis / Plastic bag surcharge thread and see LOADS of people have issues with 5p charges.
Odd.

I always tip for delivery - just round it up to the nearest £5. It's usually £1.50 or something like that.

Definitely leave a bad review and don't order from them again.

If they've accepted your order from the website then that is the price you should pay. If they can't work the settings that say where they deliver to, that's their problem.

I don't understand.

If you gave him a tip anyway, why would he need to ask for 50p? Wasn't the tip more than that?

I think it depends how much the order was.

I always tip our delivery drivers by rounding up to the next five pounds. So sometimes they do a lot better than other times. They know I do it and seem happy with the arrangement.

I always tip the driver £1 so they'd have been 50p down if they did this to me.

That's a bit mean, it's hardly the driver's fault if he's told to collect it.

They should be upfront about delivery charges, but you did agree on the phone. Doubt it was the owner delivering. DH does delivery driving in our mostly rural area, it is a crap job (he has gaps in employment history due to ill health and struggled to get anything else). The pay is a nominal amount for petrol money and then delivery charges and tips so on a quiet night he makes barely anything. The owners hassle him to drive faster than is safe on country roads in terrible weather and the wear and tear on the car is unbelievable. He recently had a guy refuse to pay, then threaten him and the restaurant owner would have sacked him if he hadn't paid for the meal himself. The police got involved and got the customer to pay (and told the owner he was an arse for not covering the cost himself). Another drunk customer told him to come in for payment, then sat down and started eating his meal, shouting at DH when he asked again. Thankfully DH has finally been offered something better and will be leaving soon.

I always tip takeaway drivers - I'm in London and the drivers around here are usually grown men doing a shitty, badly paid job, so it's usually £2, or £3 if it's really horrible weather. I factor it into the cost of the takeaway - if I can't afford the tip, I can't afford the takeaway. It's a luxury so I don't mind paying if I can afford it at the time.

Having said all that, though, it seems the place you bought from has form. they shouldn't ask for more money after you have paid. You agreed this time, so had to pay (and it would probably have been taken out of the deliveryman's money if you hadn't), but maybe look somewhere else next time.

I always tip takeaway drivers, normally about £1.00. If they did this I would probably hand over the usual tip and let them take it out of that. Hard for the driver who would then lose out.

Our favourite takeaway - we are about .25 miles out of their delivery area ( a long way in London)but they never charge us extra, however I do always phone direct rather than trying to book online.

It's a 50p charge which you agreed to. Let it go.

Is tipping takeaway delivery drivers the done thing? I don't eat takeaways so I've no idea.

Send an email Just Eat to let them know what happened. They may be able to take it up with him themselves.

JE boot take sways for this, that's why they ask for feedback.

We never tip takeaway drivers either, I don't think any of my friends do. It's it the done thing then?

If you ordered on JustEat then log it with them and leave a review. They should be including all the costs up front on the JustEat website, not tagging things on after. For one thing, JE won't be getting their percentage of these extra dribs and drabs of money, however small. And it's poor customer service to ask for extra money after you've been charged.

My student DS has delivered pizza on his push bike. He got £7 per hour, plus £1 per delivery, plus tips.

Made me feel a bit guilty to be honest because I never tip takeaway delivery.

Give them a bad review and alert Just Eat. I'm pretty sure they don't want this kind of crap. If you've already paid £2 for the delivery, they shouldn't be asking for more.

Take your multiple 50p's elsewhere next time you fancy takeaway...

I just looked at the reviews (maybe a little late!) and others are complaining about the fact that they phone for extra delivery money after the order is taken. I also noticed that £2 for delivery was actually paid by me for the order in the first place.

I'm guessing that they don't pay their delivery drivers but have them depend on tips and the driver said they wouldn't go unless they were promised a tip. A lot of takeaways are upfront that a delivery fee of £x must be paid in cash to the driver. It's often a way of people getting around restrictions on what/how/when they are allowed to work legally. I live in a Uni city and I know a lot of international students do that so they can work above the official hours on their visas. It's exploitative really.

Takeaways have always been notorious for being part of the black economy, especially as because until recently a lot of their business was done in cash on the door step service and kitchen staff were frequently paid in cash off the books too. Now the internet based ordering systems have moved towards card payments these staff seem to have moved towards driving hence often cash payments requested for delivery.

Plus I'm sad so just worked out mim wage is £7 h. So that's 11p minute. If you are just few streets out of zone and it takes them 2min to get to you and 2m to get back that's cost them extra 44p. So 50p sounds fair. need a life

Well, you either agree to the terms (extra 50p) or don't. Your choice. You chose to agree. I would have told them to fuck off or deliver for the original price. When he got to the door was not the time to negotiate!
