AIBU?

To not want to finish my degree?

CarbonEmittingPenguin · 23/01/2016 19:18

I've had a couple threads in Chat about my Master's degree but the way I'm now is exhausted and feel like I can't go on.

I handed in my dissertation last week but feel like it's below par so might maybe just scrape a pass but nothing spectacular. I'm now about to finish the MA as my final report and project is due for Monday and I honestly just can't be bothered anymore. At least I tried. I'm ready to accept a fail. I just don't see how I can pass and tbh I gave it a good shot but now willing to concede defeat. Sorry I'm rambling but I've just had it and sick of it.

Keep going penguin! My MA was one of the hardest things I've ever done. I failed my dissertation the first time (I'm not a brilliant student but my tutor was awful and absent!)

I then had to re-write pretty much the whole thing (15,000 words). I worked full time and was pregnant so I've no idea how I did it, but I nearly gave up.

I now have that MA after my name and it means more to me as I know I slogged for it, and proved myself wrong to be honest! I now know I have will power and discipline, and I'm very proud whenever I see it!

So keep going, it'll all be worth it, and I don't know anyone that enjoyed their MA!!

Oo I've been there too. The regret and self loathing when I thought back on all the procrastination! But I pushed through the hateful last couple of days and got there in the end. It was absolutely worth it.

You can do it penguin!

They have also said wanting to give up is fear of failure, which sets off a fight or flight response. You can't fight an assignment so you're left with flight (run away from it)

Yes to this. That's exactly how it is WhatALoadOfOldBollocks. When I started this MA 2 years ago I had visions of being the perfect little studious student but it hasn't been like that at all. I've been handing things in last minute and chasing my tail. My DP is a twat of the highest order and you'd be forgiven for thinking he doesn't actually want me to pass but that's a whole different thread.

I should also add that the module for tomorrow is a repeat module because I failed it the first time so I can only get 50% (I think), it's a module that I'm not familiar with at all so that feeling of just dropping the whole thing to avoid inevitable failure is what's going on in my mind.

YOU CAN DO IT, PENGUIN!

We're all behind you -- forget your twat of a DP (you can sort him out once you've done your MA).

Finishing your MA is a success even if you don't pass (and you will). You don't quit when you see the finish line that's when you run harder than ever.

How have you got on with it today?

sophorifichobnob So far a bit of a snails pace progression but I'm sure I'll get there. The issue is trying to not copy books and look like I've had some kind of academic thought or idea Confused iyswim

Agree with Melinda; don't try to make it look like something it's not. That way lies more trouble. Just do what you can. You said you've taken this before - to try to get something positive from that, what was said in your feedback that time around about the good and the bad bits of the work? Try to do the good things again, and if your marker last time said something like 'what's missing from this work is..' then you know what you need to include now.

OP hang in there. Finishing an MA is a weird, delirious time. But you can do it!

If it is a re sit it is likely to be capped at 50 but that is still a pass, and that's a respectable achievement at this level.

Hi all, just a quick note to let you all know that I have finished and submitted my work. Turn it In was playing up for a bit so I had a little panic but it's all resolved and I've just received the submission confirmation e-mail.

Thank you all for your support and words of encouragement to get that last final push. I'm absolutely shattered but hopefully it's not too early for Wine?

Flowers To all of you. And I hereby do solemnly swear to never set foot in another academic establishment for as long as I live Grin

Well done Smile Wine I once submitted an assignment four minutes before the deadline (New Year - I just got downstairs to see Big Ben!).

It definitely is a panic thing for me - if I don't do it, I can't do it wrong. But then it doesn't actually get done either... I think it's pretty normal though.
