I have two:

He hung himself. Instead of he hanged himself.

It was so fun. Instead it was either "such fun" or "so much fun"

What are your grammar bug bears?

OP posts:
MizK · 23/01/2016 15:44

I mean GENUINELY of course Blush

HarrietVane99 · 23/01/2016 15:47

I see this quite often on MN. I don't know if it's a typo that a lot of people make, or if they really do think it's a word, but it's not 'mabey', it's 'maybe'.

Other than that, 'could of' and apostrophes in plurals really bug me.

And 'I text her'.

couchparsnip · 23/01/2016 15:50

I changed my hours at work and on the front of my new contract it said:
You're New Contract. It made me cringe!

ginmakesitallok · 23/01/2016 15:50

I work for the nhs, and I die a little bit inside every time I read "GP's will do...." or "We advise GP's"

MadeMan · 23/01/2016 15:52

'ect' instead of 'etc'.

Bring back teaching Latin.

MuttonDressedAsMutton · 23/01/2016 15:58

I've had long and painful arguments about the 'text' thing. It must be viewed as a verb, surely? And if so, then it must have declensions. And so, I'm sure, it would go
I text
You text
He texts
etc and in the past tense
I texted
You texted etc. So why do people just use 'text' no matter what the tense? Why do they think that's ok? I find it all most troubling!

Oh - and everything mentioned above.

Give my bloody right tit back Worra! Grin

DisappointedOne · 23/01/2016 15:58

gramatical errors

Could/would/should of boils my piss.

Not using there/their/they're properly comes a close second.

[/pedant]

DisappointedOne · 23/01/2016 15:59

grammatical even. Blush

EvilTwins · 23/01/2016 16:01

I teach and have a yr 13 tutor group so have been checking UCAS forms. Our school is also linked to a sports course off-site so I can see their forms too. One boy has applied to do a business studies degree and twice in his personal statement has referred to working in small business' when he means businesses. And no one pointed that out to him before sending the form off Shock

bakeoffcake · 23/01/2016 16:03

So when you hear someone has killed themselves, your concerned about the words people use?

Riiiight.

Pedants comrner is that way -->>> cos posting in the wrong thread topic gets right on my tits.

DickDewy · 23/01/2016 16:06

It's got to be the use of 'of' when it should be 'have'.

I see it on here with increasing regularity.

It's so irritating.

ptumbi · 23/01/2016 16:07

Gotten - 'got' is a word which we don't even need in English, but GOTTEN is just foul.

I once saw a sign on the outside of a stables, which said 'in case of fire, all horses must be gotten out'. Sad Awful

ptumbi · 23/01/2016 16:07

bakeoffcake - your concern, or you're concerned? Not one of each.

TheBouquets · 23/01/2016 16:09

My big hate is Youse or You's. or whatever variation of it. You is singular as well as plural and the only You's I know are sheep and they are ewes!
I also hate did/done and see/saw/seen.

Groovester · 23/01/2016 16:11

Alot

Nobody writes alittle but so many write alot.

Irritating!

RichPetunia · 23/01/2016 16:14

Ishoos instead of issues

JeanneDeMontbaston · 23/01/2016 16:17

I'm not wild about failures to write complete sentences and failures to use quotation marks, but they pale into insignificance against people who judge others' grammar when their own is shite.

mrsjskelton · 23/01/2016 16:21

Could of
Should of
Would of
We was
I were

Using itch instead of scratch drives me crazy
You have an itch you scratch an itch
You do not itch an itch

IamTheWhoreofBabylon · 23/01/2016 16:28

But I love Chester draws it makes me howl

Emochild · 23/01/2016 16:31

incorrect overuse of myself

People asking for advise

Use of ect -where does that even come from???

StrapOnDodo · 23/01/2016 16:33

When is dinner at?

GruntledOne · 23/01/2016 16:33

Most of the above, plus "Myself" instead of "I" - e.g. Myself and my friend went to the shops ...

JemimaHighway · 23/01/2016 16:34

Me and DH...
Me and my friend...
Me and DD...

Ahhhhhhh so many OPs start with this. And so many recently!

"Me and DH are getting married" noooooooooo, it's "DH and I are getting married"
