To be thrilled I've not smoked for a WEEK!

Well it's actually 8 days. I got an ecig...but a posh one...having already failed to give up on those cheaper style "pen-like" ones, I invested in one with a hefty battery and more power.

I've gone from smoking 30 a day...yes...THIRTY a day to none.

I have had one slip up where I found a pack with a cigarette left in it on day three and I smoked it...well...I had about three drags and it was gross.

I'm aware that the jury's out on ecigs but hey! At least they're cheaper.

Grin

Plan is to drop my nicotine strength soon...and then ditch the ecig when I'm ready.

I've smoked for twenty years. I haven't ever been able to give up with patches or gum or anything...I'm so relieved! It was costing a fortune and of course..the health issue. I know this isn't a proper AIBU but heck....I'm excited! I just thought about smoking and didn't want to!

Hey OP! Well done, I'm the same, well almost. Day 10 for me just on ecigs after smoking for 25 years, often 20 a day. Feel so so much better. I've gone to my first excercisw class in years (and didn't actually die much to my surprise!), have even cut down on drinking wine too! I feel like I've got a new lease of life. And for the first time in I don't know how long I've actually got some cash ☺️

Allbymyselfagain · 23/01/2016 17:11

Can I ask does that one leak? I bought one and did quite well on it but then it started leaking so I'm on the hunt for a better quality one

Kenworthington · 23/01/2016 17:27

I had a n expensive one from flavour vapour (about £50) but it started leaking after a week and the glass even cracked 😳 but now I've bought a cheap one from sainsburys and it's loads better- it's a blu one. Only £15 and inc one bottle of liquid too

Puzzledandpissedoff · 23/01/2016 17:35

Brilliant these ecigs, aren't they? Smile

I'm another who stopped smoking (nearly 5 years ago) and vape instead - though on hardly any nicotine now. Very, very occasionally I've lit a "real one" just to see what it was like and the bloody thing nearly choked me ... can't imagine how I could ever have done it now!!

Puzzledandpissedoff · 23/01/2016 17:38

By the way, if you're using the standard C4 type ecigs, did you know Poundworld sell the tanks? Every bit as good as others which can cost far more ... Wink

BumWad · 23/01/2016 17:39

Well done ⭐️

Great isn't it Smile I'm 2 years smoke free and ecigs worked miracles for me. Me and DH quit at the same time swiftly followed by my DB and then DF who had been a heavy smoker for 50 years. One word of warning, watch your weight, I assumed because I wasn't eating from boredom or to keep my hands busy I wouldn't have a problem but smoking speeds up your metabolism where vaping doesn't so you may need to cut your portion sizes to compensate. Wish someone had told me that as I've put a lot of weight on but it's easily avoided if you're watching for it. The good news is it's a damn sight easier to up your activity levels to help combat weight gain when you can actually breathe properly again Grin Well done OP Flowers

Whatdoidohelp · 23/01/2016 17:57

Well done! You must be super chuffed with yourself. I think a large Wineand Chocolate and Cake is deserved.

DragonsCanHop · 23/01/2016 17:59

Congrats.

I would love to do this but I'm struggling with which one to choose, it's a bit confusing isn't it!

NoahVale · 23/01/2016 18:03

oh what a disaster, my local newsagents are selling e cigs that have a clip on clearomiser, so you dont need to fill up with liquid any more.
in flavours i wouldnt even like.
she said it was an EU directive, but sounds like a money spinner actually

NoahVale · 23/01/2016 18:03

so a disposable clearomiser, use only once.

Destinysdaughter · 23/01/2016 18:11

Brilliant news! I've not smoked a fag for 3 months now, just vaping instead. Took me quite a while to make the switch but I can genuinely say I don't want to smoke cigarettes any more and I've been smoking for decades! E cigs are the most brilliant invention ever for smokers, despite the hostility against them. Keep on with the e cig OP, and well done! Smile

Destinysdaughter · 23/01/2016 18:18

I love the vanilla juice, it smells and tastes lovely! Def agree get a good quality e cig, it was only when I got one that produced a decent cloud that I could truly replace cigarettes. The eleaf istick is good with the mini nautilus. ( aprox £50 plus the coils which were £10 for 5) I estimate my spending has gone from £150 per month to £25. Massive difference!

bimandbam · 23/01/2016 18:33

Another eleaf istick fan here. Also with the mini nautilus.

I was a dedicated 20 a day smoker. Both me and dp. Was costing a ridiculous amount of money. And obviously the health risks too. Now a committed vaper and have been for over 2 years.

If anyone is considering it my advice would be to find a local vape shop. We have 2 in our small town and both are happy to let you try different juices and explain what kit and equipment you will need. Then you can look online for suppliers if you prefer that. But definitely pop in an actual shop with a person to speak to.

They are quite used to newbies and will spend the time with you to make sure you are happy purely based on getting your continuing custom.

I alternate between tobacco, menthol and caramel flavours with the odd coffee flavour chucked in for a change. I don't really like the fruit flavours. But everyone is different.

TaintedAngel · 23/01/2016 18:41

You're NBU at all. Well Done! I'm on week 3 being smoke free. I switched to an eleaf ecig too, but mine goes up to 50w.

In all honesty, if I hadn't found a liquid I liked, with the correct PG/VG mix I would never have stopped, but I have found it surprisingly easy. Fingers crossed we all stay off the ciggies!

RumbleMum · 23/01/2016 18:57

Massive well done from me. I was on a respiratory ward last weekend and seeing the smoking-related illnesses some poor patients were suffering was awful. You're doing brilliantly. Grin

PlentyOfPubeGardens · 23/01/2016 19:05

Well done, that's fantastic Flowers

I'm aware that the jury's out on ecigs

Actually the jury is back in Smile This is the current position on ecigs from the UK Government, Public Health England and 12 other PH orgs. Basically, vaping is around 95% safer than smoking. The remaining 5% of risk is theoretical unknowns from long-term use rather than any documented harm.

I've been smoke free for over 2 years now thanks to ecigs. I thought I'd never be able to quit permanently after starting at 12 and smoking 15-20 a day for the next 3 decades. I'd repeatedly quit but a few days weeks later I'd be back on them. Vaping makes me relapse-proof and for that reason I'm happy to continue indefinitely. I started on 18mg and I'm still on 18mg with no plans to reduce, but I haven't gone the high-power route which is popular now. I still vape at 8-9 watts on a device that's capable of 50 Grin

NoahVale - she said it was an EU directive, but sounds like a money spinner actually

Both are correct. The EU TPD comes into force in May. Article 20, the bit that concerns ecigs, is shoddy law written by people who have no clue about vaping. If you were writing law that sought to protect the profits of tobacco companies and pharmaceutical companies this is what it would look like. One of the clauses bans tanks that are not leak-proof and tamper-proof, hence the non-refillable cartridges (although if you search for the specific brand on youtube someone is almost bound to have worked out a way to refill them).

There's a lot of vaping know-how on the Stop Smoking topic, come and say hello!

thegreekmythsII · 23/01/2016 19:32

Amazing! You should be so proud of yourself! Like lots of others I quit when pregnant and after a while it gets better and it stops being part of your life. Sometimes it is a question of finding something to fill the gap that's left, and having a reason to stay stopped.

I look at my children and feel so sad that, because of my smoking, I might miss out on years with them, or miss seeing grandchildren. But if you'd have told me that when I was a smoker it wouldn't have registered.

Good luck OP and keep it up.

Destinysdaughter · 23/01/2016 19:42

Am a bit worried about the new EU regs, can anyone explain what it will mean in practice? Will I still be able to buy my current e cig and juices or will only the crappy ones that you can find in newsagents be available to buy? I'll be heartbroken if I can't vape like this, it's literally saved my life!

wickedwaterwitch · 23/01/2016 19:47

Well done op and stoppers. I stopped smoking 13 years ago and I was on 40+ a day.

magimedi · 23/01/2016 19:47

Well done!

I am not being 'thread police' but come over to the stop smoking thread

www.mumsnet.com/Talk/stop_smoking

and there is loads of info for vapers & all other quitters. We are the vaping vipers Grin

After 40+ years of smoking I have been cig free for over three years thanks to vaping. I feel amazing, am able to exercise properly (I swim 1K of freestyle 3 x a week & have dropped a size in clothes.)

AM also a fan of eleaf istick + mini nautilus.

tizzylittle · 23/01/2016 19:50

Well done for giving up. I used to smoke 30 a day, and smoked for 40 years. The benefits for giving up are more or less immediate. No more coughing and spluttering, (I used to have a permanent wheeze as well) nice glowing skin, your sense of smell and taste improve, being able to walk for longer without getting out of breath, loads of extra energy......and the money... I used to put the money saved from not buying fags in a tin and watch it grow, (and it grows so quick) and then treat myself once a month to something nice. I love not smoking, and I know if I can do it anyone can. Enjoy your smoke free life. Smile

BeezerBubble · 23/01/2016 20:03

Destineysdaughter UK position being finalised but at the moment, batteries, mods, spares parts etc. no change. Tanks must not be able to contain more than 2ml of eliquid at point of sale (extension parts to make tanks bigger after sale not covered). Leak free filling is either pointy bottles or a docking system. Eliquid, no higher than 20mg/ml in bottles of 10 ml. Tanks/eliquid has to be notified to mhra before allowed on market. Bigger manufacturers should be fine. No ban on importing anything from say China.
The device mentioned by NoahVale sounds like a vivid, not tpd compliant atm since it contains 2.5ml but could easy be adapted.
Vendors can sell non compliant stock up til May 2017.
That's as it stands at the moment, doesn't look like UK gov has much interest in stamping down on vaping so hopefully no changes to the above.

WelliesTheyAreWonderful · 23/01/2016 21:14

Amazing! Keep at it and let us know how you're getting on!
