A good car parking one .....

PositivePete · 22/01/2016 20:32

There is a car parked outside my house, it's been there 2 weeks, not moved at all. It's a bit "old" shall we say.

It has every right to be there as it's a public road.

But it's right outside my fucking front door.

Should I A. Leave alone & not do anything i.e. Ring the council or B. Ring the council as there could be a dead body in it or C. Pretend it's not there?

There are Xmas presents in it, the door handle is broken & no joke .... Straw hanging out the boot!?!

I have no right to moan as I said it's a public road, but it is right outside my front door. It's been there and genuinely nobody has been there for 2 weeks.

AIBU to ring the council to tell them it's an abandoned car or mind my own sodding business?

Is there no pavement between you and the car? If you can hardly walk past with a toddler and a bag of shopping sounds like it's nearly touching your door

PositivePete · 22/01/2016 21:53

Correct! Hence after 2 weeks I'm a bit peed off.

And as I said ... even if Tom Hardy left his nice bright shiny car in the same position I would have the arse!

"Might be stolen and abandoned"

I suspect this might be the case. I had a car stolen several years ago and got it back because it had been reported as an abandoned car to the police. When they checked their database they realised that it had been reported as stolen. They went to the car, took the alternator out (to make sure it couldn't be stolen again) and came to our house with it to let me know it had been found.

So I would report it to the police as a suspected abandoned stolen car.

Akire · 22/01/2016 22:04

Take a picture and send it to council it may be considered more of a nusiemce if you struggle to get in out your house/disabled gran needs to visit and can't get in cough

PositivePete · 22/01/2016 22:10

Good advice all - thanks

But whhhhhyyy can't it be Tom Hardy's car

You have much more patience than me! We had a van parked opposite our house for 3 days when I rang 101 to report it. They can track where it is registered too etc. Turns out can had broken down and owner was waiting for a part but as we live on a rural road it was quite odd to see it there. Definitely ring and report, untaxed cars can't be parked on the road for a start.
Finger crossed for minimal animal carcasses Wink

pamish · 22/01/2016 22:22

To speed it up, as it will get towed eventually with no tax etc, say to the council that you've seen kids playing in it (doors not locked) and you are worried for their safety. One child had the handbrake off the other day....
.

BlackeyedShepherdsbringsheep · 22/01/2016 22:23

report it for causing an obstruction if you can not get past.

or find some neighbours to help you bump it to somewhere where it is likelyto get picked up.

GabiSolis · 22/01/2016 23:45

Pamish, that won't speed it up. Councils have to follow strict procedures with this. They are required to give an owner the chance to come forward before they remove a vehicle - this is because most councils crush vehicles they pick up rather than having a massive council car pound somewhere to store them all in. They are unable to remove a vehicle if they are aware who the legal owner is. Kids playing around it or not, they still have to follow the law.

GabiSolis · 22/01/2016 23:48

Blackeyed, as tempting as that may be, encouraging the OP to commit a criminal act to rid herself of the car is really not a good idea! Obstruction is a police matter.

(brother works for the local district council, he deals with this stuff daily)

Fatmomma99 · 22/01/2016 23:56

A gazillion years ago, I worked for my local council. Way back then (and the law may well have changed) they reacted to a potentially "abandoned vehicle" if it was "dangerous". And back then, "dangerous" included the petrol tank being open.

Don't know if this still applies, but good luck!

PegsPigs · 23/01/2016 08:15

I second/third calling the council not the police. I did this with some wrecks which didn't move for the entirety of my maternity leave when I used to go to weigh ins at the Children's Centre. Apparently they weren't abandoned despite have filth so thick on the windscreen from trees you'd have to scrape it off and at least one flat tire each. A few weeks after I reported they all changed their order around. Some went onto the other side of the road, others faced the other way. I now have a 7 month old so have been weighing again. They're still there all 3 of them clogging up the road and now haven't moved in at least 7 months! I know he's a resident and I'm just a CC visitor but it's such a pain in the arse to drag myself and newborn baby halfway down the road. The cars are old but hardly classics. I think one is an F reg Montego. Another I can't remember but it's an old C reg. I pity the other residents.

lighteningirl · 23/01/2016 08:34

I second bumping it out of the way if it's obstructing you. Who cares if it's illegal in the remote chance you get caught all the police will say is don't do that again. We used to have a business with a small but essential for customers forecourt. If anyone parked on it overnight or left cars there dh would push them as far as he could onto the road/pavement. Then the council would tow them pronto so just get some help to shove it along.

GabiSolis · 23/01/2016 10:33

OP you have received some very bad advice on this thread. Do not follow the illegal advice of some (you're probably too sensible to do that anyway!). Follow the right procedures. if the car is not permitted to be there for whatever reason, there will eventually be a way to get rid.

Cerseirys · 23/01/2016 10:34

Straw hanging out the boot? Might be Shergar in there!

PositivePete · 23/01/2016 11:01

Shergar was never found ..... SHIIIIIIIIIT

Cuppaand2biscuits · 23/01/2016 11:03

I thought I'd had a car abandoned on my drive. It was there when I woke up and by 10pm after checking with the neighbours I called 101. The police rang the registered owner who turned out to have permission from my brother to park there (he just didn't bother to tell me about it!)
It might have been different because it was parked on my property but the police acted on my call immediately.

Andrewofgg · 23/01/2016 11:16

Elvis and Princess Di are on tour with Shergar and Lord Lucan. Everyone knows that but the media are too frightened to admit it.

Cerseirys · 23/01/2016 11:58

You have to look OP. Imagine the fortune you could make if all four are in there!

Vixxfacee · 23/01/2016 12:01

Nosy neighbour. I have 2 extra cars outside which are family members who are abroad.
As long as taxed and insured it's none of your business.

PositivePete · 24/01/2016 12:57

It's not taxed or MOT'd or insured, that's the whole point of th is thread ....

OP posts:
PositivePete · 24/01/2016 13:00

As you will see here

wonkylegs · 24/01/2016 13:13

I had a van abandoned outside my house years ago, it was taxed (for another month) but not insured but as it was full of flammable rubbish and unlocked in an area known for arson, the fire brigade deemed it a fire risk and had it towed.

WMittens · 24/01/2016 15:05

It's not taxed or MOT'd or insured,

How do you know it's not insured?

SavoyCabbage · 24/01/2016 15:10

Well it can't be insured with no MOT or tax.
