Maybe I'm late on this one, but one of her latest singles is amazing

She seems to be very grounded despite being a child star and got down to virtually nothing in the bank to buy her artistic freedom.

OP posts:
Maudofallhopefulness · 22/01/2016 14:31

Wow that video is bad (bad, bad not good bad).

BrushtheHeat · 22/01/2016 14:40

Hmmmn. I'm not a fan of Joss Stone. My dh used to have to help her with maths at school (she was in the yr or two below) and she was vile and up her own arse. A notorious bully too. And her music is shit esp the fake soul, us accent. She's from frigging Devon Grin !!!

Bullshitbingo · 22/01/2016 15:14

ouch - that video of her at the brits is painful. She does have an amazing voice, but seriously cringe...

Lucienne4 · 23/01/2016 00:57

Each to their own I suppose but I love Joss Stone and think her voice is fantastic. It's a strange characteristic of many Brits that they dislike people who are unconventional talented . Joss is a big star in the USA - not as big as Adele admittedly but still a great British-English export. Goodness knows she,s sung at the Whitehouse and to the Queen of Soul herself Aretha.

Lucienne4 · 23/01/2016 01:02

She was a child for goodness sake. Can you imagine a Devonian accent singing a soul song. It would be ridiculous!!

Lucienne4 · 23/01/2016 01:09

She was a child for goodness sake. Your comments say more about you than her.As for her singing in an American accent can you imagine how ridiculous she would sound singing soul in a Devonian accent.

MitzyLeFrouf · 23/01/2016 01:30

Are you going to repeat these messages every 5 mins? Grin

I'll start you off with the next one 'She was a child for goodness sake...............'

Pantone363 · 23/01/2016 01:38

The only thing I remember about JS is a video she did where she's having a row with her fella in a roadside cafe. He is fucking GORGEOUS. I couldn't stop watching it just to look at him

BrushtheHeat · 23/01/2016 09:06

mitzy Grin
You know, I would think it's perfectly ok maintain an impression of someone based on their actions when they were around 14yrs and old enough to know better than to bully another child to the extent where they're afraid to go to school. All because this other child was given a singing part in the school production. Instead of her, for once. (No it wasn't me, I went to a different school.)
I'm allowed to dislike her for those reasons you know. Not everyone has to like what you like.

I concede that I didn't make myself clear but I meant to refer to her bizarre accent/behaviour from that Brits clip when I mentioned her accent.
And no, she's not relevant anymore in the industry, either here or across the pond. I think her latest offering is testament to that.

FirstWeTakeManhattan · 23/01/2016 10:22

That video is pretty bad. The song is alright, but it's not going to set the world on fire.

I think she has some talent, but arguably not enough to live up to her initial hype of a few years back.

It's hard to think who would buy this in terms of the music buying public - not sure it has much broad appeal really.

Lucienne I'd genuinely prefer to hear her lovely Devonian accent! The faux-US thing is a bit off putting.

Janeymoo50 · 23/01/2016 10:28

Not a fan at all. The whole fake American accent, moving in with her boyfriend in the states when she about 16 and her performance at the Festival of Rememberence last November was dire (and no poppy worn either). Amy Winehouse, for all her faults, was far more talented.

Debbriana1 · 23/01/2016 10:30

Once she sang with aritha franklin everyone thought she changed. I like her old stuff.

I do remember the american accent thing years ago. I think that is what destroyed her career. I remember after that you didn't hear anything positive about her.

Shame about the two men who wanted to kill her because of devil worshiping. Glad they have been sent to jail. That was last year.

BitOutOfPractice · 23/01/2016 10:36

I love her voice but as soon as she opens her mouth to speak she comes across as spectacularly dim to me

Absentmindedwoman · 23/01/2016 11:16

I loved the first album when it came out! No idea what she's like now though and not inspired to listen after reading that she was an obnoxious bully at school...

Is there a link to her cringeworthy Rehab rendition? Can't seem to find it on Youtube.

BrushtheHeat · 23/01/2016 11:50

bit she is a bit dim tbh. I didn't mention that as it seems a bit mean to hold it against her. It's her being an utter bitch that I don't like.

Fontella · 23/01/2016 12:14

I think she's a great soul singer (not as good as my namesake the late great Fontella Bass obviously Grin ) but I don't like that song in the OP much.

What impressed me was seeing on her Jonathan Ross a few years back, just getting up and duetting with James Brown and his band, and thinking to myself 'that takes some bottle'.

DickDewy · 23/01/2016 12:18

Is she still around?

I always thought of her as a bit of a twerp.

BitOutOfPractice · 23/01/2016 13:39

I've just read what you said about her brush abs I'm shaking my head at you saying my comment was mean! Hmm

BrushtheHeat · 23/01/2016 16:09

No, didn't mean it like that abit I meant that given my dh knew her and how she struggled school would be mean of me personally to comment on her intelligence. Perfectly fine of you to observe that she seems dim in interviews. Sorry if I came across like that. And besides I don't think it's particularly mean to point out that you think someone's a bitch if that's what you think based on their behaviour. It's not a baseless accusation after all. But we can agree to disagree.

BrushtheHeat · 23/01/2016 16:10

Sorry, bit not abit !

Doublebubblebubble · 23/01/2016 16:13

I have always found her annoying when she went through a phase of speaking with an American accent. That being said didn't she go through a murder/kidnap threat... I imagine it was terrifying so good luck to her for coming back... I wont be listening though

Doublebubblebubble · 23/01/2016 16:17

is it 2003? Confused

^ this also..

Op you sound like you might be a part of her management/her mum

RJnomore1 · 23/01/2016 16:20

I've seen her live at t in the park a good few years ago and she's an astounding talent. If honestly rate her as one of the best live vocalists I've heard and I see a lot of music. She also managed to get a hungover lunchtime crowd going.

And I did some really arsey things when I was 14 I sure as hell hope no one is judging me on now.

alltoomuchrightnow · 23/01/2016 19:15

Annoying, yes but nowhere near as annoying as Natasha Bedingfield who was famous about the same time as Joss was? Another one who went all american... Although, I admire the way she handled the kidnap/murder threat. For fuck's sake, the guy (guys?) had ropes, knives etc all ready..

alltoomuchrightnow · 23/01/2016 19:17

Far more severe than that actually (just googled) .. the potential kidnappers had knife and hammers, and had gaffer tape, masks and plastic bags.
They planned to behead her with a samurai sword.

if there were threats against me like that, I would never get over it. I'd be looking over my shoulder every second for the rest of my life
