To say that 'Beau' is not a girls' name?

Over the past few months, I've come across an increasing number of baby girls named 'Beau.'

Am I wrong on assuming that this is French in origin, meaning 'handsome?' (or the masculine form of beautiful). Surely Belle is then the feminine form?

One was even spelt Beaux. This is the plural, right? The X doesn't make it feminine?!

Idk, maybe people don't really focus on definitions of names. Just found it a bit odd that it's becoming a bit of a trend.

YABU - we are all over worrying about the restrictions of fake gender constructs these day dontchaknow?

Just to add to the "list" I know a man called Lauren and a women called Julian.

MsBojangles · 21/01/2016 17:35

Bo as in Derek is rather fetching but Beau or Beaux is just rank, reminds me of that cheap underwear company - Boux Avenue.

MitzyLeFrouf · 21/01/2016 17:36

Or Bojangles?

shazzarooney99 · 21/01/2016 17:37

Funny names arent they? makes me laugh when im at football and i hear all the strange names being called out, makes me laugh!

RosaliesGinBottle · 21/01/2016 17:37

'Beau' Nash in the Josephine Tey book is a nickname; her name was Pamela.

MsBojangles · 21/01/2016 17:38

Oi, leave my jangles out of this!

monkeysox · 21/01/2016 17:44

Better than "bow" which I've seen

OddBoots · 21/01/2016 17:45

Maybe you're right but the idea of there being a growing number of names that don't identify the sex of a person is one that pleases me. The less we can judge about people before we meet them the better.

applecatchers36 · 21/01/2016 17:49

YANBU not great name...

MrsHathaway · 21/01/2016 17:51

I have a (boy) cat named Beau. He was introduced on FB.

FIL commented "isn't that a girl's name?" and got annihilated by many of my friends.

Then a friend commented "ha ha" whose daughter's name is Beau. Beau is stunningly beautiful.

I replied to FIL that our Beau is named for Brummell because of his black and white markings. Definitely a man, that Beau.

FireCrotch · 21/01/2016 17:53

Actually the little girl in a Mel Gibson film (one with crop circles) is called Bo.

MsBojangles · 21/01/2016 17:54

Great name for a cat, MrsH!

ChipsandGuac · 21/01/2016 17:56

Ulrika Jonnson's Bo (girl) was named after her Dad I think. How do I even know that?!

Pipestheghost · 21/01/2016 17:59

It reminds me of Bo Radley from to kill a mocking bird.

MitzyLeFrouf · 21/01/2016 18:03

Wasn't that Boo Radley?

IndridCold · 21/01/2016 18:04

Oh, was it Rosalies? I was thinking I might like to read it again, perhaps it is safe to do so as I seem to have forgotten enough about it Blush.

wonderingsoul · 21/01/2016 18:25

I love the name beau and have for the past 5 years.

When I have another their name will be beau what ever the sex they are.

Salimali15 · 21/01/2016 18:52

I was in school with a guy who suffered from bad body odour. At that time, we all called it Bo, instead of B.O, so he became known as Bo. As a result, whenever I see or hear that name, I just think - body odour.

Alisvolatpropiis · 21/01/2016 19:04

Same to be honest, Sali.

fredfredgeorgejnrsnr · 21/01/2016 19:12

You're called "b26" and you're complaining about someone called Beau?

YABU

Viviennemary · 21/01/2016 19:24

It's just another inappropriately used name by people who probably don't know any better. But I have heard worse.

Pipestheghost · 21/01/2016 19:26

Of course it was Boo Blush

debbietheduck · 21/01/2016 19:29

YANBU, Beau is a masculine name. WTF is wrong with people?

ShowYourSeams · 21/01/2016 19:34

I quite like it. I don't think it necessarily matters where the word originated if you like the name.
But then again I'm not really a good judge, there was a whole thread in 'baby names' a few weeks ago slating my son's name because of the negative connotation associated with its meaning when used as a word and not a name.

maxxytoe · 21/01/2016 19:38

does it really matter ?
There's a girl in DS nursery class called James , it suits her
