Re the heating?

So husband can't work the heating - he is being a lazy arse. Has just complained it is cold in here - set to 18 on constantly. I said well put some clothes on - he is wearing shorts and a t shirt. He said you don't wear jumpers in the house; after all what do you wear when your out? A coat was my answer. Am I unreasonable to set the thermostat in account of jumpers?! Btw I left work to become a sahm after ds1 due to him having health problems and he is suppose to be working to support is but he he currently is not just gambling so I am not feeling charitable

Jumpers are a great invention. Don't really understand why you'd wear summer clothes in the house in the winter - sounds v inconvenient having to completely change to go out. And there is the small matter of the planet to consider.

I'm much more concerned about the gambling though.

nightandthelight · 20/01/2016 09:12

I hasten to add that I hate living in such a cold house and this weekend we are off to look at some energy efficient new builds. Am willing to accept the trade off of less space for more comfort!

DrDreReturns · 20/01/2016 09:16

We don't have the heating on much even in this weather (an hour in the morning and an hour in the evening), but we do have a fire on in the living room, so even if the rest of the house is chilly the living room is always warm. I like a warm living room but I can't stand an overheated bedroom, I'd much rather the bedroom was cold!

bakeoffcake · 20/01/2016 09:20

I'm so shocked at some of the temps on here. 25 degrees! That's tropical!

We have the woodburner going all day in the sitting room, have all the doors open so the rest of the house is warmed up. Our heating only comes on if it's below 17 in the coldest part of the house. I can't stand it too warm and always wear jumpers and a scarf in this weather.

I'd rather spend my money in something else.

Peevedquitter · 20/01/2016 09:21

It has been 1 degree for a few days where I live and it's the first time the house has felt a bit chilly. We have the thermostat on 18 degrees and still have Windows open a teeny bit in upstairs rooms for air flow.

I'm in the over heated houses being unhealthy camp just as being in a cold one is.

CocktailQueen · 20/01/2016 09:22

He's being an idiot sitting in T shirt and shorts and expecting to be warm. He IBU - put on some more clothes!

The gambling/not working is another issue.

SmallGreenBouncyBall · 20/01/2016 10:11

25 on the thermostat might not be 25 in the rooms.

if we set our to 20 the living room has 18, kitchen 15, bathroom 20....

INeedACheeseSlicer · 20/01/2016 10:34

I think it is just what you are used to (and I also think that healthy people can aclimatize pretty well to colder - or hotter - temperatures than they might think, given enough time.

I am in the cooler house (our thermostats are at 17) and more layers camp though. I am at home during the day, and I normally wear vest top, blouse, knitted jumper, jeans, socks and slippers. DH works in an (over)heated office, and normally wears a short sleeved shirt and light cotton jumper when there, and puts on slippers and changes into a thick woolly knitted jumper when he gets home.

I would say that was a reasonable level of layers/clothes to wear at home. If we are cold dressed like that, I will usually turn the heating up in the living room (though if you are just cold because you are sitting still, then you can snuggle under a blanket instead) - I don't think having to wear scarves or gloves or multiple jumpers in the house is reasonable, but needing a jumper and socks and slippers are just a sign it is Winter, not that your house needs heating further (though actually I wear socks and slippers most of the year anyway)

MrsKoala · 20/01/2016 11:54

One of my pet hates is people who don't wear seasonally appropriate clothes. i used to work with a woman who lived close to work and drove in door to door wearing a strappy vest and a cotton summer short skirt and flip flops all year round. In January, when the rest of us who had to commute and walk over bloody vauxhall bridge in howling wind, were wearing wool trousers and jumpers she would bring in extra fan heaters and the office was the fucking temperature of mercury. I used to feel really sick and she would be saying 'oooh i'm so cold' in the end i snapped and said 'of course you are, you are wearing summer clothes in January, the rest of us dressed for the time of year are just fine' she actually looked bewildered and said she didn't own any other clothes and hadn't even noticed. Confused

We have the heating on but i am wearing thick velvet leggings, a long sleeved t-shirt and a jumper, thick socks and slippers. I also have a long wool cardigan which i wear over the top if i feel chilly. My SIster and BIL are shorts and t-shirt people whatever the weather.

I like the changing of the seasons and the clothes. i find it really comforting.

pigsDOfly · 20/01/2016 12:05

I'm puzzled by this summer clothes all the year round thing. I think it's a fairly resent trend, I certainly don't remember it when I was younger but perhaps people's work places and homes weren't so hot.

I was ironing this morning and staring through the window noticed a couple down the road returning with their shopping, he was wearing shorts and a short sleeved t-shirt. The ground is frozen and the cars are still covered in heavy frost. Don't these people feel the cold at all?

Alibabsandthe40Musketeers · 20/01/2016 12:15

We have our thermostat at 22 at the moment, 18 over night. I am wearing a jumper, jeans, socks and slipper boots.

Cats you are being very odd refusing to recognise different circumstances

TheCatsMeow · 20/01/2016 12:17

I recognise it I just think it's strange that some people choose to keep it low. If you can't help it due to money that's different

MrsKoala · 20/01/2016 12:17

I also blame the shops. the amount of times i've looked for a nice dress for a posh xmas/winter party and they are all strappy or strapless. Then you go out and all the men are wearing long sleeved shirts or dinner suits/mess dress and all the women are freezing in next to nothing dresses.

Roussette · 20/01/2016 12:26

I don't get the wearing of next to nothing in winter either. When it's boiling hot no one goes out in a thick fleece and a duffel coat! It works both ways!

MrsKoala · 20/01/2016 12:34

Actually they do where i have lived. I have found non white British colleagues find even our summers freezing. I used to work in one particular office with a group of Bengali women and they had hot water bottles and thick jumpers and tights in full summer while i was wearing light summer dresses and maybe a cardi if it got chilly.

What i don't get is those who wear a bit of both. Shorts and flip flops with a thick fleece and woolly hat? or one of those strange sleeveless wool polo neck jumpers? Don't get me started on 'body warmers'! Grin

Dowser · 20/01/2016 12:55

We're at home all day and the temp is set to 22.5. I wear thick tights, boots a thin sleeveless vest, a thicker long sleeved vest, a half slip , a thin jumper a long sleeved knitted dress and if I'm cold... A sea salt zip up fleece.

Annoyingly at night in bed when the heating is off, I wear a short strappy camisole nightie and I'm bloody boiling!

I can hear DHs gasps of shock when the cold air hits him as fling of the covers and thebedroomtemp has gone down to 18 or less!

I'd much rather be hot than cold. When I get undressed For bed I instantly shed half a stone!

HumptyDumptyHadaHardTime · 20/01/2016 13:28

Some people don't little the heat or that 'type' of heat. What is so strange about that?

onecurrantbun1 · 20/01/2016 15:10

We could afford to have the heating on more but I don't like the dry kind of heat that central heating produces. We have the thermostat, which is in the hall, set at 18'c for 2 hours first thing, an hour over lunch and from 5.30-9pm. My mum thinks out house is chilly but I always find hers boiling. I would always rather be too cold!

I am currently wearing a long sleeved but short dress with 80d tights, I'm ok at the moment but would happily sit under a blanket if DDs wanted to snuggle up. I would not want to need multiple layers plus blankets just to be comfy.

DutchWabbit · 20/01/2016 20:38

Currently sat here working, the log burner is within arms reach from my chair - and on...

it's 23 degrees the other end of the room furthest from the fire - MY FEET ARE COLD Sad

Need to teach one of the dogs to sit on my feet.
