Re the heating?

So husband can't work the heating - he is being a lazy arse. Has just complained it is cold in here - set to 18 on constantly. I said well put some clothes on - he is wearing shorts and a t shirt. He said you don't wear jumpers in the house; after all what do you wear when your out? A coat was my answer. Am I unreasonable to set the thermostat in account of jumpers?! Btw I left work to become a sahm after ds1 due to him having health problems and he is suppose to be working to support is but he he currently is not just gambling so I am not feeling charitable

insisting on going round half-clothed in the UK in winter with the heating turned way up is sticking two fingers up to the planet your ickle preshuses will inherit.

but OP has rather more immediate problems.

Viviennemary · 19/01/2016 18:08

I feel the cold and like the house to be warmer. However, if money is a problem then it isn't always possible to turn the heating up. He shouldn't be dressed in a tshirt and complaining about being cold. But set to 18 doesn't sound very warm.

StitchesInTime · 19/01/2016 18:08

I have similar problems with DH.

I get cold, I put on a jumper and slippers. DH gets cold, he turns the heating up. Not helped by the fact that his temperatures in his workplace are maintained at an almost tropical level, so he's become acclimatised to higher than normal temperatures, but it's very frustrating when he doesn't bother trying to wear extra, warmer, clothing before reaching for the thermostat.

goodnightdarthvader1 · 19/01/2016 18:11

I hate the cold, but I acknowledge neither me or my DH is made of money, which is why I wear at least 2 layers.

TheCatsMeow · 19/01/2016 18:12

Do you lot not find even with a jumper on if the air cold it still feels fucking freezing? I do.

When in the house I wear a long sleeve top, jumper and sometimes a scarf. I'm often cold when none else is. The heating is about 18 but I'm allowed to turn it up if I want. Get me Hmm but I prefer to put on an extra layer first. Saying you are cold without putting on a sensible amount of clothing is daft.

Gambling your money needs to stop immediately.

islemum · 19/01/2016 18:20

Yanbu. My husband comes home after work and complains it's freezing in the house. He gets told to go for a walk out in the fresh air. He is stuck in a roasting hot office all day to be fair.

SmallGreenBouncyBall · 19/01/2016 18:26

yanbu
how twattish is it so sit in shorts and t-shirt in winter and feel cold.
just put some clothes on ffs

tibbawyrots · 19/01/2016 18:27

With the woodburner on in the small lounge can reach 26/27 easily with the door shut.

Cats love it in there. Hmm

The large lounge hovers around 20 with just the rads on, and with the woodburner in there too frequently its at least 25 in there in the evening.

We do also operate the jumper on first if you're cold rule though before cranking up the woodburners :)

nightandthelight · 19/01/2016 18:30

Your houses all sound so tropical warm! We rent somewhere with a boiler so old it isn't on the efficiency A-G scale. Therefore we can't afford to have it on. Currently 9.1 degrees here!

canyou · 19/01/2016 18:33

I agree more clothes on before the heating is turned up.
Send him around to mine, we have no heating as the oil was stolen and I cannot afford to replace it. I have a stove which is lit when DC come home from school and a plug in radiator for an hr before dc go to bed in their brdroom. I move the radiator into the bathroom and it comes on 30 min before DC get up.
I am looking forward to springSmile

laflaca · 19/01/2016 18:41

Blimey, I'd divorce DH if he insisted the heating was set at 18. That's really low for January.

CrohnicallyAspie · 19/01/2016 18:50

Why is 18 really low for January? Surely 18 is the same temperature no matter what time of year it is?

I have my heating set to 18 all year, and it only comes on 3x a day for an hour ish each time (morning, lunch, evening). So the actual temperature ranges from 16-20 depending on what time it is and which room you're in.

In any case, I'll be wearing a hoody and thermal socks or slippers, blanket if I'm sitting. And so I'm lovely and warm!

tobysmum77 · 19/01/2016 19:26

Ours is generally set to 18, but it depends what you're doing I think. Its fine if I'm up and down with stuff to do but I turned it up to 20 today when I was wfh. Its also chilly to sit in tyre evening.

TheCatsMeow · 19/01/2016 19:28

My thermometer says its 21 in here and it's cold IMO, I don't know how some have it at 18

SmallGreenBouncyBall · 19/01/2016 19:28

it also depends if the house is drafty or 'footcold'
but still, you should only complain about cold when you are fully dressed.

JaceLancs · 19/01/2016 19:51

I can only afford to have the heating on for an hour in morning and 6-10 in evening
It's set low enough that jumpers are needed sometimes even with a cardigan on top! - today it's a v neck so I'm wearing a scarf too
If it's v chilly and I'm sat watching tv I use a blanket thing to wrap round my legs
I work full time in a reasonable job but can't afford lots of heating

MrsRyanGosling15 · 19/01/2016 20:01

I think if my dh and I ever divorce, thermostat will be mentioned in the divorce papers. In my eyes he likes to be cold. I hate having so much as a slight chill in the house. I always have it set to around 26/30 and am forever hitting the boost button. When I was growing up I remember being properly cold. Huddled around a 2 bar heater with full hats, coats and blankets. It might seem strange but being in a cold house or thinking my children might be cold fills me with panic and just puts me right back to my childhood. I remember sitting as a kid and thinking when I grow up I'm never ever switching my heat off.

AutumnLeavesArePretty · 19/01/2016 20:46

I hate being cold or wrapped in layers at home so have it on 21.

DH wouldn't dream of telling me to turn it off and wrap up.

MrsPear · 19/01/2016 22:04

Sorry for late reply. The house certainly isn't chilly. No steam off tea or cold hands/ noses. And the children's backs are always warm. I think it is case of him sitting around whilst me and the boys are running around playing or doing housework. Plus it is on constant so it doesn't drop - although there have been a couple of days of turning it to 20. At the moment it costs £25 a week - renting so no choice but pre payment. I have been brought up to dress for the season.
As for the work situation I am looking to go back and I have found a course locally that can help. Although it was mortifying to speak face to face with the family worker about it all.

FlowersAndShit · 19/01/2016 22:25

I have an old 70's back boiler - i'm on a gas meter and it costs me £5 to have the heating on for 4 hours to dry my clothes/heat the flat. It's fucking freezing and I have raynauds so my hands/feet/nose are always freezing cold.

Leelu6 · 19/01/2016 22:48

£1300?! Wow. Is that for gas and leccy or just leccy?

Leelu6 · 19/01/2016 22:49

Just gas, i mean?

tootiredtoknow · 19/01/2016 23:06

My heating is set to 30 today and has been since it got cold last week. My FIL says its like a bun oven but I absolutely refuse to be cold. There are so many things I'd give up before I'd even consider turning the heat into the 20s at this time of year.

What I don't get is why people have bills bordering £100 per month. Mine is only £80 and this is not a new or average size house.
