To think england manages its taxes and services much better than Scotland or Wales

Scotland seems to all be about being generous and fuck the consequence. All these major policies like council tax freeze, letting people in council properties having a spare room, no tutition fees for anyone in Europe (unless your English obviously) and free prescriptions.

But the life expectancy is much lower despite all the extra money on healthcare and education results are worse in Scotland and wales.

That BBC story actually says that life expectancy in scotland is improving.

But still lower than the rest of the uk. That was the point.

ilovesooty · 18/01/2016 22:12

Any rosy apples?

Ubik1 · 18/01/2016 22:12

I'm
Actually feeling quite tired.

Can we do heated debate tomorrow?

You know , 'Scotland's better...no it isn't...England's better...no it isn't... etc

Salmotrutta · 18/01/2016 22:13

I do believe that there was some research a couple of years ago that linked lack of sunshine to poor health outcomes for Scottish people (something to do with lack of Vitamin D which leads to poor calcium uptake which in turn has knock on effects because Calcium isn't just for healthy bones etc.).

Plus Scots have genetic predispositions to some diseases.

Like lots of other ethnic groups - e.g Jewish people and Tay Sachs disease.

And there is no research hat shows our kids have lower educational attainment in Scotland - that is utter bolleaux.

Have you read the PISA reports? Hmm

SetPhasersTaeMalkie · 18/01/2016 22:14

No rosy apples sorry. I can do you a quarter of pear drops?

ilovesooty · 18/01/2016 22:15

Pear drops sound good thanks.

deste · 18/01/2016 22:16

My DD, Scottish, who happened to be the only Scot in her class at uni was the only one who didn't get her fees paid from Scotland. The rest were Irish. But she did get her fees paid from England.

Anyone be they English, Irish, Welsh or Irish will get their fees paid if they live in Scotland or Ireland for the previous three years.

My DD studied in London with a scholarship paying her fees but we still had to pay the Scottish part of the fees.

Salmotrutta · 18/01/2016 22:16

Oh, and by the way, presumably if our Education is so poor up here OP then you wouldn't want your kids to attend University here anyway Hmm

Are you actually a "Scientist" - because no scientist I know would come out with the sort of crap you have.

PersephonePitstop · 18/01/2016 22:16

Fuck, I missed the bit about people giving themselves Diabetes. Shock
Did you mean to be so rude OP?

What do your celebrity friends think about this?

Salmotrutta · 18/01/2016 22:19

You know what OP.

I think you are GabbyLogon.

... i.e. a journalist.

Ubik1 · 18/01/2016 22:20

There's no doubt that extreme poverty led to low life expectancy for scots in some areas.

It's good news that this trend is reversed perhaps as a result of better social and health care/research. And free prescriptions etc.

I'm sure it would take generations to bring life expectancy any up to the same levels as Oxford for example.

OneNight · 18/01/2016 22:20

The net cost of prescriptions in Scotland was just under £1.2 billion in 2014/2015, RobertaQuimby. That's not to say that the policy is wrong but it's not purely a money saver.

deste · 18/01/2016 22:21

And just to say that today I went to a pharmacy to buy some products because I can pay for them even though I could have got them for free, either from a pharmacy or the Doctor.

GreatFuckability · 18/01/2016 22:24

scrapping means testing is meant to ensure that everyone is wales who needs medication gets it, and there by hopefully improving life expectancy, thats sort of the point.
as for the education side of things. we have a lower level of attainment for a number of reasons, higher unemployment, higher numbers of people on benefits, more poverty, less money spent on education, etc.

YetAnotherHelenMumsnet · 18/01/2016 22:44

Hi everyone! What a fun topic. It's a shame the OP is a known GF who has been asked to stop posting this kind of thread, so you won't be seeing her again. Pray continue, though, the rest of you. Smile

LoisWilkersonsLastNerve · 18/01/2016 22:49
