To think work can't expect me to come in

Basicly my Ds has just come out in chicken pox
I have never had them even as a child. At work my collegue is pregnant and has never had them.
I am on probation as just started the job. I had to take a week off for a kidney infection earlier and have been warned about my absence. My overall boss has been great but we have trustees who are a stickler for the rules etc.
What the hell happens now, i can't go in and potential infect a pregnant lady but how would this be recorded. I am not ill. Any advice or has anyone been in this position.

I have a compromised immune system and have never had chickenpox. I say go to work. Your manager can send you home if needed.

Update- my colleague is seeing the midwife tomorrow morning so I am going in and speaking to my boss. She suggested poss I take a weeks annual leave and then come back to work if i have not developed them. If I do then I can take unpaid leave for a week till recovered. My colleague is heading a big project before she goes on Mat leave so it makes sense for her to be in.
I asked them if they needed a doctors
note saying my son had chickenpox and was told no she wholeheartedly trusts me

YY to all the other posters - you should carry on as normal, but inform your colleague and your manager that there is a risk. It's then your workplaces' duty to assess that risk and come up with a plan to protect your pg colleague.

This happened to me. I ended up catching them from DS on the LAST day possible (day 21).

Go in tomorrow and tell boss that you may be contagious and they can earn the woman. If you know the woman well, tell her directly via email. She can-if she's not had it already-get a vaccination from her GP.

Tell your boss anyway as you are likely to catch it from your DC. Once spots are out you'll get it within 21 days. If not, you're fine!

And because it's leave it won't affect my probation. I think I will def be back after a week.
Sorry everyone the title of my thread was awful. Made me seem like i am grabbing for days off

Wish I could work somewhere that would give me a warning for absences, yet I still look good for promotion (all while on probation still).

There is up to a 3 week incubation period so bang of for a week will not make much difference. I would go back to work until you show symptoms.

I have worked for the company before for five years before I was transferred and had an impeccable record. I got a standard warning letter after being off for a week and my probation extended. I was off with a kidney infection, in hospital as I only have one kidney and it hit me hard as you would expect as I had no other to compensate. I was mad at the time but now I know they had to follow procedure. But the company know my work and are not holding that against me.

So I may have the choice of losing my job or going in and potentially infecting a pregnant lady.

She is an adult, and can choose to not go in herself.

OP, as I said before, of your colleague is seeing the midwife she will be able to check her immunity status within a few hours and quite likely nobody will need to take any time off.

If I were your employer I would probably end your employment for too much absence.

It's also a disability organisation and most of the staff have long term health problems and disabilities so yes they had to follow procedure with the probation but allowing me to take a week off unpaid if I develop chicken pox is their reasonable adjustment so to speak. I don't get paid but it does not affect my probation record.

I hope you don't get it. Both my kids came out in the spots bang on 14 days after exposure.

Why on earth would you take annual leave when you are not ill? Surely it's better to save it in case you do get ill?

fastdaytears · 17/01/2016 18:16

Well someone has to look after her son so it's not a waste of leave rwally

You would end my employment over a kidney infection where I was hospitalised for a week expatinscotland???
God help your employees if you have any. I have gone to my manager and asked her what she wants me to do? If she had said so I would have gone in, well I am going in to see her tomorrow morning.
What else could I have done enlighten me. I suppose you have never had a days sickness in your life well let me tell you that is luck, that's all it is luck.

I'm struggling to understand this. I can't imagine any situation where I would consider not going into work- let alone whilst probation where I could likely be sacked- over the practically non exists at chance that I would pass on Cp I don't even have (haven't I read it that your son does?)

As a manager I would be likely to take you on after probation if you called me tomorrow and told me you weren't coming in for this reason.

Keep your distance and don't share bodily fluid with her. Do you think chicken pox will Jump across the room or something? (of you even had it?!)

expatinscotland · 17/01/2016 18:17

If you took another week off when you weren't ill, yes.

I have thrown myself over to my boss and she had come up with this suggestion. I am not going to ignore it. I will be taking a weeks leave looking after my son

Would it not be more sensible to ask your Dr to test your immunity. I had a friend I'm similar situation and had never had pox but her Dr agreed to test her immunity when her dc caught it and she was immune anyway. While you're off it may be worth asking the gp.
