Someone I know is calling their new born Treylon..is that a name? I've never heard it before.

Fwiw the grandmother's on both sides are telling everyone that asks that the name hasn't been chosen yet while trying to get the parents to pick something else.

Oh look! I knew it had a sci-fi ring to it. I like it more now.

SirBoobAlot · 16/01/2016 22:50

I'm with the grandmothers.

It's either a cleaning substance, or a character from Star Trek.

Furiosa · 16/01/2016 22:51

Other peoples children names are not a cue to be rude.

Why is this a thing?!

WhirlyTwos · 16/01/2016 22:53

Well, I never thought I would hear a name to parallel the awfulness of Baylor. But here it is.
They could make a well-suited couple.

PeridotPassion · 16/01/2016 22:53

It was like an elephant in the room, no one mentioned it, just sort of pretended he hadn't written it

This perfectly brought to mind a friends face when she heard the name a work colleague had chosen for her ds to be (she was about 38 weeks pregnant).

It was a truly bloody awful name and when the work colleague announced it, dfriend blinked a couple of times and said 'well, there's plenty of time for you to think about it isn't there?'. I think it was the least rude thing she could think of to say! Her face was bloody brilliant though, she had to work so hard to control it.

DinosaursRoar · 16/01/2016 22:53

Do you think the parents are just very effectively winding up their mothers, or it's a distraction technique as they want a name that's a bit 'off the wall' but is very much a name, both grannys will be so relieved DGS doesn't have a name that sounds like a form of frying pan coating they just accept 'real but not a recent member of the royal family name' happily when otherwise they might have grumbled?

Treylon sounds very west country to me.

^^^ X a million.

Iliveinalighthousewiththeghost · 16/01/2016 23:03

I like it. Trae would be a Good nn, too.

StarkyTheDirewolf · 16/01/2016 23:04

It doesn't offend me, but it does remind me of the character 'Ray Von' from phoenix nights. R-r-rraaaaave on!

Kpo58 · 16/01/2016 23:06

I'm still waiting for someone to call their child Chicane (spelt Sha-Kane)...

Pico2 · 16/01/2016 23:06

I've got a friend who used a very unusual name for her DS and had the same tumbleweed reaction.

Jelliebabe1 · 16/01/2016 23:07

Wendy was made up for Peter Pan.... They have to be made up someone!

HPsauciness · 16/01/2016 23:09

I think it's ok, it'll be Trey which is fine for a little boy.

If you google it, names come up, admittedly not very many. It's also the name of a star system in Star Wars. This may or may not make it better!

FinestGrundyTurkey · 16/01/2016 23:10

Treylon has been around for a very long time in Cornwall

Trelyon, not Treylon Grin

RudeElf · 16/01/2016 23:18

I'm still waiting for someone to call their child Chicane (spelt Sha-Kane)

Confused why?

FinestGrundyTurkey · 16/01/2016 23:25

well, it goes nicely with Chardonnay & Chlamydia Grin

coffeeisnectar · 16/01/2016 23:35

dinosaur no, unfortunately. The dad dresses like a bad gangsta innit and mum, a very sweet girl who I adore, will just go along with his idea. I was talking to the dad's mum (my SIL) today and she's just so mortified by it and can't understand why they've gone from Harvey to Treylon. The girls mum is just as bewildered. The baby is now 9 days old.

At least is has a shortening that can be used. It could be worse.

Ditsy4 · 16/01/2016 23:58

Had a "Char don nay" at nursery (that's how mum used to shout it.) and quite a few unusual names at school which I can't put on here but believe me they were and are interesting. Some I like some are awful. Poor kids!

Cavaradossi · 17/01/2016 00:34

Honestly, what constitutes a 'normal' name is so dependent on social class, region, nationality etc etc. We had the tumbleweed reaction from all four grandparents after our son was born. But his name is a classic Biblical name which, although not used a lot these days - the ones I've met have been old men - also has a very old connection to the place we're all from. Their horror was because they think all babies should be named for maximum inconspicuousness - all boys should be called John or Owen, all girls Orla or Niamh.

So the fact that you are all tutting in corners doesn't in fact mean it's an awful name by some kind of collective fiat. They'll get used to little Trey.

EssentialHummus · 17/01/2016 00:48

I dunno. Whenever I read these threads I always think, one day this little guy / girl will need to get a job and compete in the world, and their name might hold them back. It's not the only consideration, but I really do think that Will this look OK on a CV? needs thinking about.

RubyFlint · 17/01/2016 01:28

"Hi I'm Treylon". When spoken aloud it sounds too much like trailer or draylon.

Trail on
Tray long

PaulAnkaTheDog · 17/01/2016 01:30

It also sounds like a sanitary towel, or something along those lines...

SoWhite · 17/01/2016 01:58

Howard Donald from Take That has just named his newborn Bowie Taylan. Maybe similar names are about to be really edgy and trendy, and we are all just out of the loop.

LucyBabs · 17/01/2016 02:27

How else would you pronounce Chardonnay?

Oh no has Howard donald really given his son the name Bowie? Reminds me BO
