That consultant said this word...

Ozwizard · 16/01/2016 10:57

I went to the hospital to see my results from my consultant. Result of this is that I will have to have surgery that has a six to eight week recovery time. As he was explaining my condition he said that it is very common in " Negroid ladies"!!
The nurse in the room looked at me and shifted uncomfortably in her seat! And I took a second to register if he really did say that. Then I did a nervous laugh and said to him " you must not use that word" he said "what, that is what you are" " what is wrong with Negroid"? I said " stop, use another word". He said " oh I didn't know that Negroid would offend you"
Aibu that he should not have said that word?

OP posts:

You are really flogging a dead horse OP.
Clearly you don't think YABU.
Anyone who thinks you are has been met with argument/drip feeding/hostility from you.
If you can't cope with alternative viewpoints then don't post in AIBU. You ASKED if you were being unreasonable were FFS.
If it is that much of an issue for you, which it clearly is, make a complaint rather than going round and round in circles on here.
Then move on.

waitingimpatient · 16/01/2016 19:29

Maybe there is nothing 'wrong' with the word but to the OP there was

It caused offence therefore it was offensive especially as she asked for it not to be used

FlatOnTheHill · 16/01/2016 19:32

OP
Again...if you didnt find it offensive the first time why did you ask him to stop using it the 2nd and 3rd time.
Why did you ask him to stop using it if you say you were not offended.
Can you not see why people other than myself are confused.
You are contradicting yourself.

PollyPerky · 16/01/2016 19:32

. There is actually something wrong with the word when he has been asked to not say it stop saying it!

Eh??

So he ought to do what you say?

It's not a naughty word.

I remember when calling someone 'black' was offensive and people thought 'coloured' was PC.

How times change.

Get over yourself.

waitingimpatient · 16/01/2016 19:34

Sorry but of a x cross post. I had assumed you had found it offensive but you say not OP

ilovesooty · 16/01/2016 19:36

No one should be in a public facing role unless they are "quite up" with acceptable terminology and undertaken equality and diversity training.

PollyPerky · 16/01/2016 19:37

so why is negroid wrong? Do white women get all uppity if they are called caucasian ?

FlatOnTheHill · 16/01/2016 19:39

OP. Your comment at 19.28 states word for word

"I didnt find it offensive"

Then Your last sentence says....

"there is actually something wrong with the word when he has been asked to not to say it stop saying it"

Make your mind up for gods sake. One minute you were NOT offended then the next minute you were Hmm

ilovesooty · 16/01/2016 19:45

She was taken aback when he first said and the nurse appeared uncomfortable. She was offended when he repeated it after he'd been asked not to say it.

I don't see what's so difficult to understand here.

Most doctors at our local hospital can barely speak English. Its the same in most hospitals. Suggest you write to the Government about the diversity, equality and terminology training you are speaking about.
To be honest if I had a fantastic doctor or surgeon then I would not give a monkeys if he used the wrong terminology re race. He would hardly be doing it to offend. Its his expertise in his field that would be the important thing to me.

ilovesooty · 16/01/2016 19:48

Exactly MrsDeVere

DeoGratias · 16/01/2016 19:48

The one I like which doctors use is "morbidly obese". Bring them on. Let people cry in corners or get therapy if they are offended. Let doctors concentrate on saving lives.

WTF. You are clearly just trying to goad the Op.

ilovesooty · 16/01/2016 19:51

Flat I don't need to "write to the government"

We have an Equality Act. Most services, especially those involving public facing work, have mandatory equality and diversity induction training and generally thorough refresher training as well.

FlatOnTheHill · 16/01/2016 19:51

MrsDevere
Whats wrong with uppity. Better than saying pissed off

kesstrel · 16/01/2016 19:52

OP, you've been shown that this term is a medical term in current use by foreign doctors, including black African doctors. Your initial reaction was understandable, but may I respectfully suggest you make allowances for cultural differences. It's failure to understand that cultural differences exist, and may explain behaviour that appears to be offensive or problematic, that is at the root of a great deal of prejudice.

ilovesooty · 16/01/2016 19:52

Oh here we go Professionally offended Hmm

redbinneo · 16/01/2016 19:54

ilovesooty
If the cap fits...

ilovesooty · 16/01/2016 19:57

Well we've had all this shit PC Professionally offended

If I had a bingo card it would be filling up nicely

Why is it that some black people are so quick to take offence and have massive chips on their shoulders? for real?

JaneHair · 16/01/2016 20:00

Redbin - the word 'niggardly' means to be mean with money, so the fact you've used it totally out of context suggests to me you have an ulterior motive. And a fucking nasty one.
