to wonder if this product of mine is too niche for mass appeal?

I'm not sure if that's the right word I'm searching for here but I'm sure a helpful MNetter with correct me if not!

I make jewellery and I have a product which I personally really like but I don't know if its something that will appeal to a wide market and if I should bother trying to sell it or if its something that only appeals to me and others that work in a particular area.

Obviously I realise that I can't really expect you to comment without knowing what it is, and this may out me but here it is:

Its a 'DNA' bracelet. Well, it looks like a strand of DNA, using pairs of different coloured beads to simulate the A-T/G-C base pairs and either leather or hemp cord. I vary the patterns of the beads each time I make one to try and make each bracelet unique Smile

Aibu to think this is this something people will be interested in? Or is it a bit too geeky to have mass appeal?

Just looks like beads on a string to me.

handslikecowstits · 15/01/2016 22:06

I think it's a nice bracelet but it doesn't look like a DNA helix to me.

steff13 · 15/01/2016 22:08

I like it. I was going to say I didn't see DNA, but on the close-up picture I see it. I'd probably buy one.

samesizetoes · 15/01/2016 22:11

It looks very similar to friendship bracelets but with beads instead of cord. Not particularly remarkable nor niche.

MrsGradyOldLady · 15/01/2016 22:11

I can see it's a dns strand on that last picture. I think they're nice. It's not something I'd wear myself but I think my 15 year old daughter would like one.

TheSecondViola · 15/01/2016 22:13

Doesn't look like DNA to me. It does, however, look like you are spammin aibu for market research though.

firesidechat · 15/01/2016 22:14

I've made and sold handmade stuff before, although not jewellery and as a consequence I've seen a lot of beaded jewellery. In all honesty it looks just like any other beaded stuff I've seen and doesn't say dna to me at all. A couple of women I knew did the most amazing, fluid beadwork and I think you have some way to go. Sorry. It is a work in progress though, so it might work with a bit of tweaking.

The handmade jewellery market is over subscribed and you have to be really unique to make your mark. It's tough.

Trills · 15/01/2016 22:14

It's pretty but does not say DNA to me.

Are the colours set up like DNA?

e.g. blue always opposite red, and green always opposite purple?

fastdaytears · 15/01/2016 22:15

Close up looks more DNA-y to me but then if you're going for subtle anyway then my comment is obsolete!

Can you set up an Etsy shop and then make to order? Is that how it works or is there more of a gamble involved?

Nicky333 · 15/01/2016 22:17

You're probably asking on the wrong forum, given how anti-everything MNers can be.

I think they'd sell. Register for Folksy (like Etsy but smaller, easier to stand out, U.K. sellers only) and it costs 15p per listing. If they sell, you pay Folksy commission, if they don't sell, you've lost 15p. There is a good forum on there as well.

MarthaMonkeynuts · 15/01/2016 22:18

This is more what I would expect

to wonder if this product of mine is too niche for mass appeal?
firesidechat · 15/01/2016 22:19

I agree with Nicky. I had a shop on Folksy and the forum was very helpful.

Shakey15000 · 15/01/2016 22:19

Sorry, but it also looks just like beads on a string to me also. If you could replicate someone's exact dna then at least there's a "story" to it. But I imagine that would be nigh on impossible and could cost seventy twillion pounds. Wink

timelytess · 15/01/2016 22:21

Looks like a caterpillar.

timelytess · 15/01/2016 22:22

Or earwig.

Timeforanamechangy · 15/01/2016 22:22

I was trying to do them in coordinating colours but still with 4 separate ones to represent the base pairs so I can do them in whatever colours people like rather than having a 'rainbow' effect. I've done 2 others, one with silver leather and blue/turquoise beads and one with lilac leather and beads in different tones of purple.

The beads are set up so the same colours are always paired with the same colours, so in the example above there's a dark blue bead with a lighter blue and a darker purple with a lighter purple but it isn't very obvious from the photo (sorry).

Sorry viola, I don't have a lot of RL friends to ask and none that have any business experience so I thought it better to ask a wider group that had no personal connection to me for honest advice Smile

Fireside, definately a work in progress! It isn't my main job but I do really like it so I'm learning new things all the time just have limited resources :/

I think they are very pretty OP. Would it be possible to use different coloured beads for the cytosine, guanine, adenine, and thymine and thread them in a specific way to represent a different animal? i.e. cat DNA bracelet, dog bracelet, human etc..

Not a suggestion by the way but a real question. Or am I massively overestimating jewellery making and genetics? Confused

theycallmemellojello · 15/01/2016 22:22

Why does it have to have 'mass' appeal? Things with niche appeal are surely a better business model as there's less supply. I'd market the DNA bracelet at scientists. Yes it's a niche market but there are not many accessories aimed at them so you might expect things targeted at them to be popular.

Tiggeryoubastard · 15/01/2016 22:22

Sorry, it's nothing special. Just looks like something you've made on a boring afternoon. I wouldn't pay for it, I'm afraid.

firesidechat · 15/01/2016 22:24

I think it;s a great idea, but needs some fine tuning to make it look a bit more like dna. I'm sure it's possible. Maybe finer beads?

bettyberry · 15/01/2016 22:25

People actually get their DNA sequenced and turned into art

www.dna11.com/products/dna-portraits

PlumpFiction · 15/01/2016 22:26

Google Etsy Resolution (free 4 week programme about opening an Etsy shop); check out the Facebook group; also as a PP suggested look at Folksy. I think Nicky's right, explore this a bit further in a different forum and get advice/tips from existing sellers. Good luck with it - it's nice looking jewellery :-)

Bearbehind · 15/01/2016 22:27

Maybe offer half as DNA bracelet and half as caviar bracelets- broaden your market!

Timeforanamechangy · 15/01/2016 22:29

Furiosa, definately possible if I can find the sequence!
