to ask someone to move their child out of my plane seat

1000 replies

kipperssippers · 13/01/2016 20:00

more of a WWYD then AIBU but...
i booked the seat by the window as i always do and when i got to my seat a child around 8 was in my seat with her mum beside her.
When i got there i told the mother that the window seat is my seat and she said her child wanted the window seat to look out, i then replied then you should of booked one.
I didnt want to cause a scene but the women made out i'm an arsehole for asking her kid to move as she had never been on a flight and wanted to look outside.
I did give in and stayed pissed off for 7 hours in my non window seat.

what would you of done in this situation?

OP posts:
janethegirl2 · 13/01/2016 23:50

My mum lives near Forfar and it's bloody freezing there, not sure if she's got snow yet though.

cleaty · 13/01/2016 23:50

I would have insisted the child move. I love having the window seat.

TheCatsMeow · 13/01/2016 23:50

jane those are assumptions you've made about me. Nothing that I've said.

How do I help people? Hmm lets see

I do voluntary work
I've given up my seats on trains like in the OPs situation
I've paid for things for strangers when they've been short on change
I've been late for things because I've stopped and given directions to someone
I've rescued stray animals
I always help people with pushchairs and wheelchairs if there isn't a ramp
I've given up my seat for children when there aren't any seats left
I let people go in front of me in the queue if they have less shopping

I could go on. It's called being a decent person.

prettybird · 13/01/2016 23:51

Oh - and BTW, I'm not English! Smile

I'm very friendly, will frequently talk to strangers and live in a city where a frequent complaint is that people won't give you directions, instead they insist on taking you there themselves "because they were going roughly that way themselves" Wink

And we have planes and trains and buses and even a teeny weeny underground and everything as well Grin

Not everyone on Mumsnet is English, so don't assume. Hmm

RonniePickering · 13/01/2016 23:51

Why, you're almost saint-like Shock

janethegirl2 · 13/01/2016 23:52

Yes but Cat you stop people getting off trains, I think that may negate a lot of the other stuff. Missing your stop cos you can't get out the door is a biggie for most people

Bettercallsaul1 · 13/01/2016 23:53

Strange how the (first-time) OP on this thread has disappeared completely, after a mere four posts, leaving the stage to Cats. You'd almost think her work here was done. Grin

I reckon someone is going for (another) 1000-post thread!

TheCatsMeow · 13/01/2016 23:53

Jane I expect the same consideration I show others to be shown back. But it isn't because people here aren't like that

Only1scoop · 13/01/2016 23:55

Better exactly Grin

Wonder what's lined up next....

Planes....trains....

Automobiles perhaps?

janethegirl2 · 13/01/2016 23:55

May be we should all shut up and leave the stage to cat, however I'm not good at being quiet when there is provocation in the air Grin

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 13/01/2016 23:56

TheCatsMeow - how would you be 'helping others' if you left your buggy in the train vestibule so others had to climb over it? As you said on the other thread you'd be happy to do.

Nb - I am not holding my breath, waiting for Meow to answer this question - this is the third time I have asked it (once on the other thread, and now twice here).

TheCatsMeow · 13/01/2016 23:56

The only reason I'm still commenting is because you lot won't back off

Only1scoop · 13/01/2016 23:56

Don't feed the Soggy old Moggy any more scraps.

ilovesooty · 13/01/2016 23:56

Good grief. I couldn't live with myself if I showed the same consideration to others as you've demonstrated on here.

OfaFrenchmind2 · 13/01/2016 23:57

Whereas I know for a fact that all the posters here:
-Kick homeless people,
-Sprawl on two priority seats in the bus when there are pregnant women standing
-Short-change elderly people at the cashier,
-Knowingly got two busload of Japanese tourists lost in London
-Eat stray puppies
-Practice pushchairs and wheelchairs surfing on stairs
-Eat babies
-Queue-jump.

Darn those British people!!!

TheCatsMeow · 13/01/2016 23:57

I've said MANY TIMES that I expect the same level of consideration back. So if I'm having a difficult time I'd like some slack like I give to everyone else all the time

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 13/01/2016 23:57

"Jane I expect the same consideration I show others to be shown back."

So we can all stop Meow from getting off the train and tut at her when she is cross with us. Hurrah!

Bettercallsaul1 · 13/01/2016 23:59

Oh, I think Cats will go on performing as long as there's any audience left, jane! (and she won't care what seat you're in!)

Moln · 14/01/2016 00:03

Good grief. What's going on here?

Do we need Aidan to take his shirt off?

apricotdanish · 14/01/2016 00:06

You do real these things don't make you in any way exceptional don't you? And you're hardly altruistic if just because you show common courtesy just as the vast majority of people do, you prattle on endlessly about what a great person you are!

Bettercallsaul1 · 14/01/2016 00:06

Soggy old Moggy Grin Fancy a name change, Cats?

Moln - the answer to that is "yes".

MagzFarquarson · 14/01/2016 00:08

Ooo SDTG Grin

Bettercallsaul1 - agreed. I personally think we should comply Smile.

I do most of those things too.

& I'm kind to lonely neighbours.
& I let other cars turn in/out at junctions.
& I donate to lots of charities.
& im generally a warm & wonderful human being.

BUT I STILL WOULDN'T HAVE LET THE CHILD IN THE OP HAVE THE WINDOW SEAT I'D BOOKED & PAID FOR Grin

sugar21 · 14/01/2016 00:10

If you want Moln I'll just wake him up

sugar21 · 14/01/2016 00:11
