Common sense prevails in Wales over term time holidays.

My English born boys hav never experienced any anti-Welsh sentiment, but then their class is stuffed full of the offspring of university lecturers. The Welsh children must all be in WME :-)

I'm pleased with the announcement and have already booked my term time holiday. My parents always took me skiing in January, where not only did I learn a new sport, I had lessons in German. I picked up way more of the language in those classes (and later flirting with handsome ski instructors) than I ever did at school.

It probably depends on the school socks, my school didn't have English streams as there wouldn't be enough children. But after her 9 you had the option of doing your work in English although lessons would still be in welsh. I did a mixture.
My DPS school did English streams and I do think there wasn't much integration between the streams.
I would imagine though having done their primary education all through welsh they wouldn't have any trouble carrying on in welsh. And its the understanding that's important not the language of the words, a lot of science terms are Latin anyway so not too confusing to adjust from English/welsh.

Now, as I have said MANY TIMES on this thread, since reading the views of others I can accept that this may be a localised problem, limited to my area

I think you're right Socks. North Wales and South Wales are very different. The majority of South Wales Schools are English medium with a few Welsh medium schools scattered about. Nobody has to attend Welsh medium, although in North Wales I should imagine there is less choice. In English medium schools, they have Welsh lessons, but all other schooling is in English. And jolly good it is too, IME.

So...... Welsh language aside, I believe most parents in Wales welcome the opportunity to take their children out of school for up to ten days a year.

Yes, getting back on topic, it will save people hundreds.

Some heads have been accommodating about this and arranged to have all inset days within the same week so parents can go on mid term hols. I think that's a good plan too.

DisappointedOne · 18/01/2016 09:54

Unless you have children in different schools!

MissBattleaxe · 18/01/2016 12:09

Ah yes, but its a step in the right direction.

It totally depends on where you live in Wales.
Cardiff issued 1,315 fines in in 2015
Merthyr 75
Flintshire 71
Port talbot 0
Swansea 0
Conway 16
