To think a 84cm / 34 inch waist is not "slim"

Here's a link to the article

I'm very open to being told IABU, in fact I'd be quite relieved to be told I have a warped view. Right now though I don't think a 34 inch waist is slim. To me slim is no larger than a size 10 so around a 27 inch waist max.

Unless you are a much taller than the average woman (average being 5' 4"?) I think a healthy (in the general sense of the word) waist is less than 30 inches.

However I have a small frame and have felt overweight whenever I've needed to wear size 12 bottoms (and that's still not over a 30 inch waist).

The irony is that I still think I'm at high risk of developing diabetes because my father has it and whilst not overweight I have a diet quite high in sugar.

Genuinely interested in people's views on this and whether my own view is out of kilter with the norm.

Iamnot - just googled images and found this one as just one example, there are several. This woman's belly button is clearly in line with the frontal protuberances of her hip bones, and well below her waist.

TheCatsMeow · 13/01/2016 13:50

loobrush I have a short body so the end of my ribs is only 2" above the start of my hips. My belly button is where my hips are. I think it's because my torso is tiny

Moln · 13/01/2016 13:55

Is that the right picture ThumbWitchesAbroad?

BarbaraofSeville · 13/01/2016 13:59

I am probably around a size 12/14 and 5'7". My measurements are about 39/28/41, so in reality a size 14 with a size 10 waist in most clothes shops. Nothing fits Sad

My weight and body fat percentage is at the top of the healthy range and I could do to lose a few pounds, so shorter size 12s probably are overweight.

Due to the width of my hips I would never be less than size 12 on the bottom half even if I lost a stone or more.

I'm intrigued about how people carry their weight differerently - are more people carrying fat around their middle now? Is it a change in diet or activity or something else? Or are there no changes in where people carry their excess weight, just that there are more overweight people?

In order to find your waist measurement (the health one - not the one you might give a dressmaker) measure half way between the orange and yellow line.

But moln you're going to be measuring bone Confused

Frostycake · 13/01/2016 14:11

Iamnotloobrushphobic Google 'high hip' & 'low hip' and 'straight hips' and 'curved hips.' You will see many configurations which will explain why the waist measurement is so problematic.

To see the difference, look at bikini photos of Stephanie Pratt and say, Michelle Keegan.

ThumbWitchesAbroad · 13/01/2016 14:16

Yes Moln - I can't see why you think it wouldn't be? Confused

Badders123 · 13/01/2016 14:16

My bmi is sadly just over 25 (25.5 I think) as I have put a stone on in the last year.
My waist is 30 inches and I would like to get it below 30.
29 would do!
However, there is a 10 inch difference between my waist and hips which I think makes me look in proportion iyswim?

Moln · 13/01/2016 14:22

Halfway between the yellow and orange? No you won't.

TheCatsMeow · 13/01/2016 14:24

You will on certain body types Moln you would on mine

Moln · 13/01/2016 14:29

Because the picture doesn't reflect what you wrote Thumb

Moln · 13/01/2016 14:31

You have bone in your stomach?

ThumbWitchesAbroad · 13/01/2016 14:32

??
Yes it does, it shows that the woman's belly button is well below her waistline, and in line with the front of her hip bones - well very nearly in line.

What do you think is wrong with that? Confused

TheCatsMeow · 13/01/2016 14:32

moln it's hard to explain but my torso is really short, so there isn't any room to measure below my waist that isn't touching the top of my hip.

TheCatsMeow · 13/01/2016 14:33

Thumb it definitely shows it!

GraysAnalogy · 13/01/2016 14:33

I have massive child bearing hips, my belly button is in line

green18 · 13/01/2016 14:33

34" is slim for a man.

green18 · 13/01/2016 14:34

You measure your waist 1 inch above the navel actually Moin

Iwantakitchen · 13/01/2016 14:36

I don't get this. My bmi is well within the healthy range, I am 5foot 8, and my waist is 35. I am 45. how come I am supposed to have the same healthy range of waist compared to someone who is 5 foot 2 and 25 years old? Doesn't make sense to me.

TheCatsMeow · 13/01/2016 14:36

Right this is weird but here...the black is my waist and the yellow is where the bone starts

GraysAnalogy · 13/01/2016 14:38

In fact can anyone help me here, where would I measure my waist, Im bloody confused now??

(yes I did go to the effort of posting my chubby belly, and yes I'm sporting pj's its my day off Grin )

GraysAnalogy · 13/01/2016 14:38

Oh the cats is your belly button low or hips high? I can't tell

green18 · 13/01/2016 14:39

The waist is obvious in both of your pics. About an inch above belly button.

StatisticallyChallenged · 13/01/2016 14:39

If you measure round my belly button you definitely get bone too. I have a 15" difference between hip and waist measurements and a fairly short torso. I'm overweight just now but even when I was a healthy bmi, size 12 hips with a tiny waist that measurement would not have been under 34. I've noticed when looking at pictures how high some people's belly buttons are compared to mine though, mine's rarely visible over pants or bikini.
