Invited to a party for an adult's birthday next month. Theme is "James Bond - Dress to Thrill". Hmm

We are a stocky bloke, curvy overweight brunette woman and 5 year old child. How the fuff do we do Bond?!

Oh well don't go then. You've had loads of brilliant ideas and you've poo-poohed them all, so it seems quite obvious that you don't really want to go - so don't. Just decline the invitation.

Don't go if you don't want to. If you do want to go, just put on whatever you want to wear, then look up an obscure character from one of the less popular films and tell everyone that's who you are.

Last party we went to was a fancy dress one (if you wanted to) and we all did. DH hired something and I made costumes for DD and I. They weren't anything like fancy bond outfits and cost pennies to make. We're having to travel and stay in a hotel/pay for drinks too and so spending £100s on outfits we won't ever have cause to wear again is a bit much. Most parties/dinners I'd just wear a jersey dress (Monsoon etc) with thick tights/leggings and boots. That's not going to work here!

I'm really not trying to be difficult!

DH once went to a bond themed party with a toy gun, wearing a dressing gown. Not difficult at all.

Isn't M a short, slight grey haired lady? I'm 6ft, curvy fat with long purple hair. I'm not sure that's going to work!

jersey dress (Monsoon etc) with thick tights/leggings and boots = money penny on her day off. Sorted Grin

It's a great theme. It just means those that don't like fancy dress dress up nicely in a nice dress!

Love it, coffee!

I don't particularly like "fancy dress" but really, choosing Bond as a theme is about as easy a theme as there is, and if you have a problem finding something to wear for that, I'm astonished.

I do think you're making a mountain out of a molehill and there are always clever ways of getting round things if you can be bothered or are slightly inventive. Christ, wear a nice frock but paint your middle finger gold!

The current M is a man, by the way.

If your 5yo is anything like my 3yo, you could give her a toy stethoscope and prime her to say "NO!" to everything she's asked - Dr. No. Easy.

The trouble is that I think this is a posh party, not a joke costume type party.

Couldn't DH just wear a black t shirt and black trousers with a toy gun or something?
DD could go in a party dress or as a cat.

I know! There are lots of kids (the hosts have a 12 year old and practically all the guests have kids aged between 1 and 15). With the distance most will be travelling I guess they though it was easier to have the kids there than cause problems for parents needing childcare. But the theme doesn't seem to work with that demographic!

I think you are trying to find problems. No one is going to care what you wear!!

I HATE fancy dress. LOVE your username though OP Grin

Sadly the reasons for my username can be found in another thread. Sad

I haven't seen much Bond. Do any of them wear pyjamas? I could probably do that!

It's not going to be that posh if there are loads of kids there! Also if it's posh, and you have nothing posh to wear, the James Bond theme is irrelevant. Or in fact could make it easier as you can pick a character who is not so expensively dressed, or do as someone else said, black polo neck, trousers and toy gun.

You're not being unreasonable - because it's an overdone cliche: but I'm not sure that was the bit you were objecting to!

You sound like me the night before a night out. But honestly you're just making excuses. Go in whatever you want to and no one will care. With children there I'm sure comedy outfits are acceptable, definitely for children

you are NBU. Fancy dress parties should be banned after a certain age or made non-compulsory.

If you want something cheap but different go as the girl killed by being painted gold all over in Goldfinger. You would be naked but I'm sure that's no problem but don't forget to leave a patch of skin unpainted on your spine. Smile
