To ask how much money you have left...

After paying for essentials each month? So after paying your rent/mortgage, food and bills, travel and if applicable childcare, what's left 'spare' for socialising, buying clothes, going out etc etc. And are you able to save much?

DP thinks we don't have much money left after bills, I think we have more than enough and I likely more than the average person. If it's not too completely rude to ask, would you mind sharing what you have spare? Thanks so much Smile

We have a few thousand spare each month but we always seem to use it up rather than save, partly because we have moved to a house that needs modernising. We spent £7k just doing the garden last year and we're thinking of getting the house rewired and new heating this summer which wI'll be about £20. DH refuses to get a loan or extend the mortgage so we pay everything 'cash'. Even though we have a disposable income I feel broke a lot of the time.

TheAnswerIsYes · 10/01/2016 11:15

*£20k

Foslady · 10/01/2016 11:24

Next to nothing - single mum on slightly more than minimum wage already working full time and if I got another job I'd never see my dd and the first three hours worked would be used to fund her Childcare.
Hurts when I think how hard I worked at school and college but then had 2 xh's who admitted they purposely messed up my study time and belittled me into wrecking any chances I had of getting good results. Since I have been on my own I did resume my studies...... Only to be made redundant and had to take any job I could and now struggling to get out of the low wage pit.

Life sucks

Flutterbutterfly · 10/01/2016 12:10

God an embarrassing large amount, our monthly take home is 20k. Mortgage is paid off so a stupid amount left over.

We bought and sold a few properties before this one and DH is a consultant contractor.

thelouise · 10/01/2016 12:11

TheAnswerIsYes A few thousand spare each month and you feel broke?! Christ, you have no idea.

blueshoes · 10/01/2016 12:44

OP still hasn't come back to tell us how much she has left every month, which is a bit rich considering she is asking posters to reveal personal info. Hmm

ilovesooty · 10/01/2016 12:55

The OP returned and gave that information.

SquadGoals · 10/01/2016 12:55

Yes she has blue, she said yesterday that they have approx 700 a month left.

SoapandGloryisDivine · 10/01/2016 13:01

About £1000

CalleighDoodle · 10/01/2016 13:10

thelouise she said all their disposable income is bring swallowed up by house repairs and modernising, so not no idea at all!

Prettyinblue · 10/01/2016 13:12

About £300, for going out, clothes, holidays , but not kids activities.

Chattymummyhere · 10/01/2016 13:40

Our bills including food but not car insurance as we pay that in one lump come to about 1.3k and we have about £750 random spends per month but no idea on what as it just seems to disappear. We are shop aholics though which is something I want to change this year.

Georgia85 · 10/01/2016 13:44

Around £800, although it will be around £1100 from March once my car finance is paid up.

TheAnswerIsYes · 10/01/2016 14:37

TheLouise I have had no heating since November and it is bloody freezing. We won't have enough money together to get the new heating system put in (the old one cannot be repaired) until about May/June so a whole winter with no heating in a draughty single glazed house.

I think I have an idea.

DamedifYouDo · 10/01/2016 14:57

We have quite an accurate budget and after everything is paid for (that includes mortgage / food / fuel / bills / saving for Christmas / Birthdays / Holidays buying clothes / houses repairs / car maintenance / insurances / pension) we have about £300 left.

Squiff85 · 10/01/2016 15:27

I thought we were doing Ok till I read this thread! Some people earn a serios amount of money!!

thelouise · 10/01/2016 16:07

Still, I think it's worth being mindful of your terminology. Living in a house that needs renovating is hard but it's not the same. Having a few grand spare each month to be able to do renovations means you must have a huge income and therefore are in a much better position than the vast majority.

UntilTheCowsComeHome · 10/01/2016 16:12

About £300-£350 after everything.

soyvanillalatte · 10/01/2016 16:33

Not sure what you mean by "left". We sort of don't work like that in my family. (retired).

BuggersMuddle · 10/01/2016 16:38

A fair amount, but I don't track it to the nth degree.

Over and above JA contributions I have about £1700 for anything personal (whether essential or discretionary). I know this is more than most people and we are fortunate. I don't buy masses more than I did when my total take home was less than my 'personal' money tbh, but I do buy nicer stuff when I do spend.

Yes we save. Varies depending on costs and I think we probably should save a bit more.

soyvanillalatte · 10/01/2016 16:40

Actually I really had to think about this thread as I started to get worried. We are pretty much retired and owe nothing but obv pay council tax and gas/electric and communications. We do a few consulting jobs here and there which pay pretty much directly for those and whatever we need and that's it, We also have an amount of money set aside that we have never had to touch. I guess we are in status quo.

maggiethemagpie · 10/01/2016 16:44

To the person who wanted to know what job I do for my income, I work from home in HR and earn about 2.5k per month. My partner is a SAHD but with an income from property of around 2k per month. Which is great for us as we don't have to pay any childcare (have 2 DCs, aged 4 and 2)

We have a really good work life balance for the income although we could earn more if my partner went back to work and we paid for childcare. However, he really loves being a SAHD and we have the luxury of being able to do that so will probably keep it that way until the littlest one goes to school, in sept 2018

JustBeingJuliet · 10/01/2016 17:47

At the minute, absolutely nothing, but I'm starting a new job later this month which will mean I'm bringing in £1000 a month more than I'm getting at the minute, so I'm planning on paying off the credit card and then saving a good chunk each month. It will be nice to have some disposable income for once!

cornflowers · 11/01/2016 09:55

I probably have around £2K left over each month, dh about £3,500. DH saves most of of his share because I pay for a lot of the day to day things, clothes etc

HappyGirlNow · 11/01/2016 10:06

£4-5k approx but can be more as DH is self employed so it varies..
