to keep my flap up during a flight

I've just landed from a 13 hour daytime all the way flight from China. We flew over China. Mongolia, Russia etc and the scenery below was breathtaking as it was clear.
However, I was apparently, one of those passengers, because, having booked a window set to look out, I refused to pull the blind down until after lunch, some 4 hours in.
Fellow passengers were huffing and blowing but that just made me more steely resolved. It was a daytime flight, them wanting to sleep meant they needed to wear the slumber shades provided (no-one seemed to bother).
WIBU to keep it open to see the mountains?

People who need to sleep on the plane can bring a pillow and an eye mask.

ZingDramaQueenOfSheeba · 11/01/2016 02:33

Slumber masks are bloody uncomfortable.

ZingDramaQueenOfSheeba · 11/01/2016 02:42

Anyway, it's all about Op's attitude.

Queen of The Flap decided she'll be mountain gazing out of spite and show the bastards who is in charge.
What a child.

sleeponeday · 11/01/2016 02:51

This thread is good evidence of why I fucking hate flying. It brings out the worst in so many people.

elementofsurprise · 11/01/2016 02:56

Am I the only person who's able to sleep without it being dark?! Especially if travelling long haul, crossing time zones, and generally being knackered enough to sleep during the day... even a super long "day".

Although tbh I'd be too busy looking out the window too. Smile

ChipsandGuac · 11/01/2016 03:00

I hate it when people close the blinds in the window seat because it makes me feel claustrophobic. There is literally no need. If it's a sleeping flight, you get an eye mask anyway.

ZingDramaQueenOfSheeba · 11/01/2016 03:13

I have insomnia and I can't fall asleep easily even when all the conditions are right: I'm exhausted, it's dark, quiet AND my knees are warm!
I'd feel I'm in hell if I could -finally- fall asleep but there was bright light in my face, though it's available.
And if I knew that some prick is selfishly preventing me from sleeping and out of spite...let's say no weapons on a plane is a great idea! Grin

To me OP's behaviour is just as ridiculous as if she insisted on singing loudly for 4 hours because she felt like it. And would justify her behaviour by saying the others should use earplugs.

ZingDramaQueenOfSheeba · 11/01/2016 03:14

*though it's avoidable

Stupid autocorrect

Cellardoor1 · 11/01/2016 04:40

Zing surely if you know you can only sleep in those conditions then it's up to you to facilitate those. Bring an eye mask and ear plugs if you're flying in the daytime and need to sleep. It's not the responsibility of other passengers to make you comfortable.

ZingDramaQueenOfSheeba · 11/01/2016 05:01

I don't fly. If I did I'd have to suck it up. Because of arseholes who don't care about others.

Bollocks to " it's not other people's responsibility to make me feel comfortable"
If I knew my fellow passenger was uncomfortable I'd try to be helpful. I would never deliberately stress them out. And for 4 hours? Ffs! I can be a twat, sure, a bitch too, but this is some other level of evil.

BTW how nice of you to tell people what to do.
I'm not allowed to use earplugs, because I have a hearing problem and was told it would worsen if I used earplugs.
So I'd suffer about ten times as much from noise as an average person as that is what's the normality for me. And being sleep deprive on top of that would REALLY be just peachy!
But yeah, you can carry on not givig a fuck. As you were. Enjoy your bubble - until you need help or a bit of consideration.

I despise selfish people.

pullthecracker · 11/01/2016 05:10

I had this on a flight from South Korea to Heathrow. I was made to keep the blind down as we were flying over China, which I'd have been really interested to see. The crew said its because it would be night time in our destination. It would have been 3.30pm!
The crew were adamant that I put it down.

If you're on a flight where there are cabin staff moving about, other passengers getting up to go to the loo or get something out of a locker, drinks or food being brought, whatever else - is an open window flap really the only thing which prevents people sleeping?

dratsea · 11/01/2016 09:29

So, China to Europe = E to W. Sun will be on Port side (and up for most of flight) If you do not want to see the sun book a seat on starboard side? (Origin of POSH if anyone interested).

limitedperiodonly · 11/01/2016 10:46

Slumber masks are bloody uncomfortable.

They are zing. They make my nose sweat, which seems a trivial complaint, but we're in the realms of trivial complaints here.

It makes them slide down over my nostrils and constrict my breathing, which is not an aid to restful sleep.

Combined with someone craning over me to peer out of the window, it's a wonder I've never jabbed someone with my elbow and told them to fuck off.

limitedperiodonly · 11/01/2016 10:52

I never bring a pillow. I wear a 4 ply cashmere cardigan and take it off and squidge it between my head and the wall. It's really soft and so thick it cuts out vibrations so they are reduced to a hypnotic murmur. I have a lovely cashmere blankie and socks too.

Grapejuicerocks · 11/01/2016 11:43

The flap is the temporary property of the seat owner. Yanbu, although I would like to think that if the glare was really uncomfortable rather than inconvenient for someone, I would try to help them out a bit.

flamingnoravera · 11/01/2016 12:11

There was no bad glare, it was just light and sky with a view below. I compromised by pulling the blind down after lunch, they had 8 hours with the blind down.

I went aft to see if I could see the view anywhere else but because all the blinds were down there too (apart from the odd one with someone sitting by it in the far cabin) this was not an option.

I do book seats depending on the direction of travel and the sun etc. On the way back from SFA recently I got to see the aurora borealis for three hours on the port side. The cabin crew were encouraging everyone to lift thier flaps and have a look- it was mesmerising.

OP posts:
NickiFury · 11/01/2016 12:13

I pa a lot of money for my flights, I will do what I like thanks, within reason. I don't recline seats though because I HATE that when it's done to me. YANBU OP. Not at all.

limitedperiodonly · 11/01/2016 12:24

I went aft

Is that the pointy end? Sorry, I'm not a seasoned traveller like you, OP.

I do like the way you keep slipping in mesmerising references to lifting flaps, though.

TooMuchRain · 11/01/2016 12:24

YANBU, I loved looking out of the window on a day-time flight from Bangkok to London. At one point the cabin staff were asking everyone to put them down and I queried it and they said fine to leave it up. It was going to be late afternoon when we landed so would have been silly to sleep anyway if trying to avoid jet lag.

ZingDramaQueenOfSheeba · 11/01/2016 12:41

limited

I'm gonna have to nick your cashmere cardi, sounds luxurious to fall asleep in front of telly

Ah well, what can I say to the person who said "but I paid for it blah blah blah"
Sleep - basic human need.
Indulgent mountain watching - a nice pleasure.
Sleep is more important.
Ever heard of denying prisoners sleep is a form of torture the Japanese (and others) used in various wars?
That if sleep deprivation is so severe it can lead to death?
Oh but you paid, sorry, the others probably didn't so fuck'em.

Maybe OP could sit next to and take temporary ownership of the toilets next time, thus denying people another vital bodily need. Might as well.

Again, I despise selfish people. We are all supposed to look after each other and be responsible for the well-being of others. No matter what the circumstances are, whether you are sitting together in the clouds or in the mud.

NickiFury · 11/01/2016 12:46

Zing your posts are bordering on hysterical.

Are you actually comparing the OP watching the view for a third of her journey to torturing prisoners? Grin

ChristmasCabbage · 11/01/2016 12:49

Flap Grin

OldFarticus · 11/01/2016 12:54

I think the person next to the er... flap Grin gets the deciding vote so YANBU

However it's more likely that they wanted you to put the flap down because they couldn't see their TV screen with the glare. (Which IS a bit shit really, because they can't exactly look out the window from the aisle and thanks to you can't watch TV either...)
