12yo (yr8) DS2 is not happy.

He got in from school 3:45pm and wanted to go "into town" to spend his Christmas money.

I said no because:

  • It's a 2 mile walk each way, which he's done alone before but it would be dark before he got there today, let alone back.
  • I didn't want him going alone with £60 in his pocket, dark or not.
  • I know it's his money, but he wants to wander round until he finds something to spend/waste it on, rather than having any specific wants IYSWIM. I think he needs to value his spending money more.

Personally, I think any one of those reasons would be good enough, he disagrees. Would you have let your 12yo go?

I meant what? Ever? To the person above me....

Fair enough, I obviously got the wrong end of the stick. Apologies.

It's fine I should have made the pause between the two words clearer... I tend to type as I think.....:)

For me it would depend how safe the 2 mile walk was.

I'm not sure how I feel about a 12 year old frittering large sums of money away ... mine are both sensible with money (Xmas cash got spent on clothes) so I have never been in this position. Also most of their money goes directly into a bank account, and they can only take out 20€ a week on their cards, which limits the potential for impulse spending.

So maybe that's a yes, but only if the 2 mile walk is safe, and on the condition that he doesnt take all the money at once (maybe let him take £15).

I'm with your son on all three counts.
