to show no interest in Pokemon?

The next time DS (10) tells me something about Pokemon (which will be within the next 10 minutes) I swear I'm going to scream. I have already completely ignored him, rolled my eyeballs, huffed, even said "I'm really not interested" and he is just not taking the 'hint'.

First it was Thomas the incredibly dull Tank engine, then it was Angry Birds who filled me with anger, then Bakugan, and now Pokemon. He becomes fixated and drives me mad with a constant stream of trivia. And I just can't fake an interest. He tries to force interest out of me by asking me what Pokemon would I prefer to battle in such and such conditions.

Does anyone else have this problem? I seriously don't think I can take much more.

I do my bit by buying him Pokemon stuff, I even made the effort to find an online Pokemon quiz the other day to test his knowledge. I just can't take the constant Pokemon chat when I'm trying to live my everyday life.

DS watching Pokemon on Netflix as we speak. What grates me especially (apart from the plot being exactly the same in every single episode) is the really hammed up high pitched squeaky voices the characters have. They exclaim "oh!!!" and "eh??" a lot.

foragogo the PS4 doesn't sound that bad in comparison. At least the kids talk to each other about that and realise that your mum is not the go to person for game banter.

PaulDirac yes I catch myself humming the effing Pokemon song much to DS' delight.

ProcrastinatorGeneral is GoffGoff a Pokemon swear word or something?

Some of you get respite due to the fact you have a dh or other children. It's just me and DS. Probably the most difficult thing about being a lone parent actually, I'm going to ask Gingerbread if they have volunteers for this kinds of thing.

Those of you who say you 'play' Pokemon. Here's how we 'play' Pokemon.

DS gets his Pokemon cards. Then he makes up the game completely so the rules don't make any sense or have any consistency and he wins all the time. I do offer "shall we find out how to play this properly because it might be slightly less mind numbing if we were actually playing a proper game but he laughs off my suggestion, claiming himself to be a Pokemon master who does not need such superficial guidance.

We have endless wittering about Clash of Clans here. And minecraft. It's tedious in the extreme.

Hide in the loo with a bottle of gin wine.

orangepudding · 03/01/2016 12:43

My ds is playing Pokemon on the ds right now. Earlier he was watching it on Netflix. It has pretty much been his only interest this holiday. I much prefer it to yu-gi-oh or power rangers.

Cornelialovett · 03/01/2016 12:50

My 7 year old is also Pokemon obsessed.
It was Thomas the tank, then super heroes , then mine craft and bloody stampy.
Anyhow it's now Pokemon on TV, on the ds. Pokemon books. You tubers discussing Pokemon. He has a Pokemon themed room. I'm trying to see the positives as I'm guessing the teenage obsessions will be even less appealing! He's like someone nearby to talk to but none of his friends share the Pokemon love.

Cornelialovett · 03/01/2016 12:51

He got a pikachu onesie for Christmas as I've had to content with him pretending to be a bloody Pokemon for the last week.

cakedup · 03/01/2016 12:57

Cornelialovett I get "guess what Pokemon I am" and then he proceeds to attack me. It's always 'annoying' Pokemon funny enough.

SouthWestmom · 03/01/2016 12:58

We should have a Pokemon club for them. My 8 and 10 year old are beyond obsessed.
It's very very expensive in mainstream shops though - cards for ten quid etc. Nothing in between soft toys and cards. We use Amazon for books and the adult manga section for cartoon novels.

cakedup · 03/01/2016 12:59

Awwwww! Now I feel really bad!

DS just paused Pokemon on Netflix and asked me "is there anything I can do for you?" He is now making me a cup of coffee.

Pokemon ain't so bad I guess [guilty].

I feel your pain OP.

bruffin · 03/01/2016 20:30

They never grow out of Pokemon, DS 20 bought Dd pokemon cards for her 18thGrin
Just when you think they have forgotten it all rears its ugly head again.
I used to play name a pokemon beginning with A , B etc on the way to nursery with dc, so over 15 years of it.

nocutsnobuttsnococonuts · 03/01/2016 20:31

DD loves pokemon too, its one of the few programmes i would happily sit and watch with her and get v upset if they watched an episode while i did boring housework much better than hearing about sodding paw patrol from the youngest....

I do also play it on the gameboy advance and have a couple of pokemon tshirts myself Grin

Kpo58 · 03/01/2016 20:43

I'm nearly 30 and still obsessed with Pokemon. My DH bought me a Sandshrew Plushie a couple of years ago Grin

Maybe when needed remind your DS that the main characters help with the housework and he should copy that?

PassTheMead · 03/01/2016 20:56

I managed to get some brilliant pokemon plushies from Aliexpress for my obsessed DS (7) Tepig, Oshawott and Magikarp iirc, only a few quid each, and good quality!

dillite · 03/01/2016 21:04

You are never too old for Pokemon! I used to watch it when I was little, and now my dd is watching it on Netflix. She only likes the original ones though. We tried watching Pokemon black and white but ut was all computer made and shit. This is the first thing you could say she's been obsessed by- she gave no shit about Frozen, Peppa Bacon, Cbeebies stuff or Disney. But ahe could not resist the adorable Pikachu though. I managed to get some original character figurines off ebay for Christmas, and she was so happy to get them.

Brock is a bloody creepy sex pest though. I am surprised that none of nurse Jenny's or Officers Jenny's have filed a restraint order against him yet.

My mother though hated it when we watched it and now she hates it when DD is watching it.

ProcrastinatorGeneral · 03/01/2016 21:11

cakedup one of the Pokemon is called Goffatel or some such bollocks and responds to anything said with "goffgoff" and nothing else. I consider that to be all the knowledge I need to hack off an eight year old aspie enough to leave me alone :o

SirBoobAlot · 03/01/2016 21:17

Pokemon is possibly the least annoying of the array of phases out there, I'm going to make the most of it Grin

Geraniumred · 03/01/2016 21:23

I like Pokemon as it is on on a school morning and gets my dd out of bed without any effort on my part. She also likes my little pony. The mine craft phase has faded though.

CoteDAzur · 03/01/2016 21:37

YANBU. I've been in a Pokémon hell for the past 6 years. DD has THOUSANDS of those cards, numerous albums, films, books, and likes to share the love. She spread it to DS, who is likely to carry the torch for at least another 6 years.

They are also both into Minecraft. DD at least plays with it quietly, but DS talks about the frigging game All The Time, and no amount of "Honey, mummy doesn't know what you are talking about" will stop his endless monologue on the subject.

dillite · 03/01/2016 21:39

Are Digimon still a thing?

peppersaunt · 03/01/2016 23:01

Two words: Pokemon mangas. Avoid them like the plague (glad they have some at the library as refuse to buy)!
