not had enough wine this evening obviously, but aibu in thinking that asda have cocked up a bit when they describe sausages as veggie/vegan, have found quite a lot of stuff described as v/v when it clearly isn't ! some one needs a kick up the arse, oh, hang on it is probably a computer fault but don't people programme them any more - maybe i should slurp up and have another !

asda doesn't read labels? >helpful

Schrodingersmum · 01/01/2016 21:11

Asda do infact stock vegan quorn and also gluten free quorn products

mysteryfairy · 01/01/2016 21:16

It is actually a bit rubbish. I shop for a vegan and whilst I'm not going to buy prawns or meat by mistake there are plenty of more ambiguous items e.g. I've absentmindedly bought salad with honey in the dressing before. If the categorisation can't be trusted then I wouldn't shop there. I don't anyway, but did make a special trip for the vegan quorn when it came out and was only in Asda and Waitrose.

mrsfuzzy · 01/01/2016 21:19

thank you mystery you know what i'm saying

Quorn has eggs in so not vegan

Not any more. There is a vegan version of Quorn available now, no eggs involved.

skankingpiglet · 01/01/2016 21:26

Honey is a grey area for a lot of vegans (and 'bee'gans) I know though.
Generally I've found a lot of people who really shouldn't be are clueless about what classes as vegan. We got married a few years ago and had a fair number of veggies and vegans attending so asked our caterer for the whole of the cold part of the buffet (plus some of the hot) to be vegan. There was mayo everywhere... when questioned, the caterer replied 'oh no, it's all meat-free' Hmm He genuinely didn't know the difference between veggie and vegan, I just wish I'd discovered the fact before the event!
I also regularly find recipes in the veggie chapter of cook books that contain bacon. Delia, I'm looking at you

TelephoneIgnoringMachine · 01/01/2016 21:31

How silly. They also have smoked pork sausages labelled as vegan.

My favourite is the George Homw Twist & Go personal blender.

TelephoneIgnoringMachine · 01/01/2016 21:32

Sorry, should say "Home". My tablet is always defying me.

AnchorDownDeepBreath · 01/01/2016 21:53

I wasn't implying that you didn't...I think maybe that came across more poorly than I intended, and I apologise if you took offence. I didn't intend any.

Breadandwine · 01/01/2016 22:34

I’m a vegan, so this interests me.

Not a great fan of Asda - I’ve no wish to add to the profits of the richest family in the US.

But I had a look at the website, and the first thing that struck me is that they have vegan Quorn which is a plus .

Then Violife - vegan cheese, £1.87 in my local HFS, £2.28 or £2.48 in Asda.

But then, one click down the page - ‘Peeled Prawns’, described as ‘Suitable for vegans, suitable for vegetarians.’ Shock

And searching for ‘vegan’ also turned up a chocolate cake with dairy cream.

Now I’ve got 4 reasons to avoid Asda!

AbbyCadabby · 01/01/2016 22:38

Honey is not a grey area at all, skanking. It is not vegan. Any wannabee beegan may try and claim it is, but it is as vegan as dairy. i.e. not.

Looks like Asda just have a glitch on their site right now.

CalleighDoodle · 01/01/2016 22:48

what do bees do with their honey?

NewYearNewToads · 01/01/2016 22:48

Surely it's just a glitch in the system?

AbbyCadabby · 01/01/2016 23:40

Calleigh, they consume it in the winter, it is their food store. And for their bee babies. When humans take it, it means death for the bees. Bottom line, it is not ours to take, and we don't even need it. Plus, quite revoltingly, it is bee PUKE. WHYYYYYYYYYY would anyone want to eat that anyway? Cockroach vomit, anyone? If not, why not - does the thought repulse you? If it does, so should the thought of bee puke. It's just that we have been conditioned to think of it as good.

DyslexicScientist · 02/01/2016 08:46

Meh people are generally a bit shit with this.

I encounter people like of the royale family often.

Even my gp asked if I had meat, fish or dairy often. No I'm one of those vegans that doesn't Hmm

QueenofLouisiana · 02/01/2016 08:57

it seems very difficult for people to get their heads round sometimes.

I'm vegetarian, I don't eat meat- yes that includes chicken, ham, bacon- y'know meat. Last year my aunt carefully pointed out the vegetarian foods at dinner, while ladling chicken rice onto my plate (only realised when I looked at what she was doing).

DyslexicScientist · 02/01/2016 09:14

Yep queen I'm not sure why people struggle to understand.

Oh your a strict one, what about a cooked breakfast don't you have bacon? No. How about Christmas dinner you eat meat then right? No. What about chicken? No

Then comes the desert island question that we've all heard thousands of times. So dull.

mrsfuzzy · 02/01/2016 11:04

anchor it's okay, glad to see i'm not the only one who gets irritated with people saying "oh, you're vegan, how weird, " now if i was jewish and didn't eat pork etc no one would comment. dylexsic i feel your pain on this one :)

I thought you meant like Morrison's then, they have a range with MEAT FREE written all over it, its in a section labelled vegetarian, but its not vegetarian. They have another range which is vegetarian but the meat free stuff has other non-veggie stuff in it

sashh · 02/01/2016 13:38

Breadandwine

And yogurt, which it says is dairy free but contains "Yogurt Cultures (S.Thermophilus, L. Bulgaricus)"

Damselindestress · 02/01/2016 14:02

That is annoying. I hope they get the glitch fixed soon. Obviously items such as prawns and continental meats are not vegan but there are some items where the error might not be as obvious and people might accidentally purchase them thinking that they are.

Damselindestress · 02/01/2016 14:03

Regarding the quorn question that has come up, they now produce 2 vegan items: 'chicken' burgers and pieces that are clearly labelled as vegan. The rest of their range still contains egg so is only vegetarian.

Pipbin · 02/01/2016 14:10

I do all my food shopping online and I never trust the filter for vegi stuff. If there is something that is questionable then I look at the ingredients or the packaging just like I would in the supermarket.
The Ocado filter is good but often stuff that is vegi is missed out.

In my experience you need to take responsibility for this yourself and don't trust shops to do it for you.
