i just don't get it!

it actually makes me abit sad, signifying the end of Christmas.

Honestly what is it about the forced jollity? Its another year -whoopie.

we make resolutions we know we wont stick to and there is mass hysteria at midnight. Then nothing actually happens Hmm

Im not a grinch. i am a bit of a home body but quite happy for there to be a party if there is. a reason for it.

I absolutely love NYE, it's my favourite night of the year. I will spend a small fortune tonight on overpriced tickets, taxis and drinks but I will have a brilliant night with great friends in a fabulous venue with a fantastic atmosphere and amazing musicians.

For me NYE is a chance to reflect and ask myself what I want to achieve or change about myself my life, so I make resolutions and to do lists for the year ahead. I know that I could do this any day of the year but there is something magical about the blank canvas of a new year.

If it's been a good year then I celebrate all the good times and if it's been shit or uneventful I celebrate the fact it's over and that I get an opportunity to start again and make next year better.

I hate it too.
Dd is spending the night at mil's
Dh is going to see friends (we went out last night instead for a lovely meal at our favourite restaurant)
I'm going to have a lovely soak in the bath, eat my body weight in pate, cheese and crisps, have a few glasses of wine and watch tv.

This is my 54th NYEGrin over the years we have done lots of stuff - big parties, events, balls, stayed home in pj's, had friends over for a party.

All have been good and right at the time and any excuse to meet up with friends is good Smile Tonight we are going round to a friends house where there will be lots of other friends too so it will be fun to see everyone.

I don't really understand why people feel pressured into it though

In the sense of not being a narky old grinch i have told DD (10) she can stay up for midnight, she looked at me like Hmm but we are going to get a take away and play some of her new board games that thankfully aren't soul destroying.

Then of course, true to form, work has gone crazy and i don't envision being out of here before at least 8.30 tonight Shock

I am trying though :)

New Years Eve for us is a trip to the cinema or theatre, a couple of times to a comedy club. Usually easy to get tickets.

When I was a child, my aunt had a small but boozy family party on NY Day so NYE wasn't "a thing". I went out quite a lot when I was in my teens and 20s but it's so overrated. My DH, kids and I had a good one with friends in Scotland in 2009 - neighbours in and out of each other's houses - we were made extremely welcome by everyone despite never having met them before.

I love NYE! My family are at least 50% Scottish though so we have always celebrated. Big family/friends party and plenty to drink, a chance to get dressed up and eat my MILs party food. New start for a new year too. What's not to love?

"What's not to love?"

When you have a small family who live too far away and friends who are busy with other people. That's what's not to love.

Love, love Hogmanay (Scotland). Since I've had kids we just stay in. Tonight the ILs are coming over and we'll have nice food, wine and a game. Then I love watching the fireworks at midnight on the television. January is one of my favourite months of the year. Clean and peaceful after the excitement and hub bub of Christmas.

I can understand people struggling with New Year if they are having a rough time and yes it can bring up sad memories. But I don't understand people who take their decorations down on Boxing Day and grump over New Year for no apparent reason. It seems sad.

I'm a bit meh about it. I used to enjoy going out and getting rat arsed. Now I have dd so it's just another day for us. I'm not looking forward to the fireworks later on that'll no doubt wake her up

I quite like it. I've never really hit the town, usually house parties.
My worst one was heading into town just before my 18th birthday, and failing to get in anywhere with no ID. Most of the upper 6th got in one way or another, but my friend and I just looked too young. At 10:30 we were on the train of shame back to suburbia Blush

I got most out of it in the pre-children years when Christmas was more disappointing. Now new year is more low key, but young children make Christmas better.

Last year we were in but decided to do a games night. Then DS1 snuck down so we let him join in. He loved the bells and fireworks.

I like the chance to reflect and set some goals too.

I don't much like it. When I was younger I used to go out, have to stand 10 deep at the bar for 3 times the usual prices and wish I wasn't there. I now have the excuse of a 3 year old and a baby so we had a few friends over for a cheese and champagne lunch, everyone was gone by 4- will get the kids in bed for 7 and have a bath and relaxed night in with Dh. Can't wait!

Never done anything for new year myself mostly never had friends or family to celebrate with.
This year has been the best so far with positive changes and I am celebrating with a few friends and kids at home we are all looking to the future and that is what Hogmany is about.

Lang may your lum reek. Sums it up for me beautifully.

I don't bother with it these days if I can help it.

Before we had children DH and I would often go out, but I must say I have never really enjoyed the forced jollity of it and was always secretly glad to get back.

Parenthood came to my rescue. I had the ideal excuse of "no babysitter" available to me, and I used it. It wasn't until years later that I openly admitted that, actually, I didn't want a babysitter. I was quite happy staying in with my small family and getting up the next day without feeling too hungover.

Tonight I might curl up and read my book, with a couple of glasses of wine. That will be it.

I prefer it to Christmas (even though I am religious), though I don't go out for it or celebrate: for me, it's all the possibilities contained in the idea of one year ending and another starting. At this point, there is still the hope that things can be different, the anticipation of the potential for change.

It isnt anything special to me really. Its just another day. I stay up and the kids are allowed to stay up until they are tired/fall asleep. They are super excited about this! I am having my mum and brother over tomorrow. We will have some drinks and nibbles to start off the New Year but that's about it. Im not sad abou seeing an end to the year. I am not bothered about 2016 or the starting of a new year. I take every day/week/month as it comes. The date is just a number.

Report
FlatOnTheHill · 31/12/2015 18:24

Totally agree. Pointless false jollity.

Have always found nye underwhelming or disappointing. Even as a teenager. Christmas Eve was always a much better night out. The better nights out recently were a meal out with family and a party with the in laws. We did use to stay up and wait for the fireworks but cannot see the point of it really anymore.

I wouldn't begrudge anyone else enjoying it even though it doesn't do anything for me.

When I was 14 when I made 20 resolutions and broke all of them by my birthday (4 Jan). Since then I haven't bothered.

I celebrated NY until I met my husband and now I don't because he doesn't like it and I have realised that if I cared deeply I might have done something about it.

I used to love it back in the day. when you are younger, any excuse is good enough to party. now I can't even stay awake until midnight and I'm not making any efforts to!
