To think this could be a fake note

Sorry dont know where to put this. I have attached a photo. There's another 2 like this as well. The paper feels slightly funny (I think) If you hold them up to the light the hologram is shown but you can see it when it is not held up to the light as well. The hologram does show a 10 but not a picture when you tilt it. It smells a bit like bleach as well. £30 pound is a lot to loose if i went to tesco what are my chances of them spotting it (if it is a fake) and if they are spotted what would happen would the police be called. Thank you

Sorry I was being an idiot. I thought the note was normal other than the 10 being 01. Just got another out and realised it is just a mirror image

X-posted as you can't remember where you got it from you have no hope of getting your money back.

You need to find out from an appropriate authority whether it us genuine. If it isn't then you have simply lost your money sorry. If you try to spend it you could well get in trouble with the police, and could be prosecuted. They may not believe your assertion that you didn't know (or even if they do it may not help - if that was a reasonable defence it would be an awful lot easier for forgers to make a risk-free profit). It's not worth it for £30.

You may find they are genuine but just got something spilled on them or something. Forgers rarely bother with £10 notes when they can make £20 notes for exactly the same amount of effort.

Obviously if you think it is fake you should take it to the bank, not illegally launder money.

Just take it to a bank! Nobody on MN will be able to give you a definite answer either way.

You see where the orange ER box is at the front bottom? If you rub that on a piece of white paper and some orange comes off it is more likely to be real. Also hold to the light and check the queen in the watermark. It's not all that unusual for some people to treat their notes. It's common in some cultures particularly as they like the notes to look new

Who gave it to you?

Have the new non paper notes entered circulation yet?

Looks fine to me

I was coming on to say what JustMeandHim said about seeing if the colour comes off when rubbed on white paper.

Fold it into a point - you can write with real ones as the ink doesnt dry - fakes do.

Realistically, I'd just try and spend them, as I suspect most people would. Hope that they're accepted and if they're not...then probably try my luck in another shop, if I'd been given them back.

I'm not moral enough to risk chucking £xx away by handing them in. I'm more concerned about my own finances atm.

I just got a ten pound note out of my purse which I was given in a shop in town today. It looks exactly like yours even down to the horizontal lines on the back of the note. It smells to me like wrapping paper. Can you see the queens head in the oval when you hold it up to the light?

I paid with a £50 pound note and the lady rubbed it to see if the ink came off before accepting it. So try that.

I took it to tesco, they said they couldn't accept it but aren't saying whether they thought it was fake or not and gave it back i went to sainsburys went through self checkout and it got accepted to anyone who wanted an update. Tesco sai dit mainly looked de faced

For the sake of clarity I've flipped the image.

Lol - what genius produced that? hahahahahhahaahahahhahaha

Notes aren't back to front. On both sides, the writing £10 is £10.

That should be on Britain's dumbest criminals lol.

Likeadivil - you do realise the picture is flipped, hence looking back to front

OutToGetYou · 30/12/2015 17:28

It's not back to front, the photo was uploaded backwards, like the old days when you would spot a reversed negative by seeing a wedding ring on a woman's right hand.

Note looks fine to me, can't understand why Tesco said it was 'defaced' and I bet they take all sorts of notes with stuff written on them (in fact, I bet they write on them themselves when cashing up), usual rule is if you don't think it's fake and it has both serial numbers then you take it.

If you're not sure, only a bank will tell you - but I see you've got rid of it now.

As someone said, £20's are far more risky.

See the flattened diamond shape on the left-hand side? That should have a special ink on it; rub that part VERY hard on to white paper. You should get a mark.

I think self-service tills have built in note checking devices which can tell if a note is fake. The watermark looks okay, the metal loser emblems look okay. It looks as though someone has run a coin down the metal strip on the back of the note, but that's all. It is, however, impossible to tell from a photo on the web. Very new notes can feel odd. The fakes I've seen have the wrong paper in terms of thickness and feel and the watermark of the Queen's head isn't the same - no detail, facing the wrong way, too small, etc.

Metal loser? Metallised!

Did you tell Tesco you thought it was dodgy? Can't see otherwise why they would question it.

I'd rather take a fake £10 to Tesco than an independent trader.
