To wonder if anyone else 'can't see' HD?

A family member got a new 4k TV at Christmas and it sparked a discussion about whether there's a discernible difference between standard/HD/4k.

Almost all the female members of the family (3/4) say they 'can't see' any difference, but the men (5) can.

I am the odd one out, I'm female but find HD much clearer.

So I was intrigued as to whether there is a genuine division by male/female, or if it's coincidence and another family might find all the women can see it but not the men, or if it's because the women in my family don't really care about TV so aren't observing that closely?

And if there really is a male/female divide, why can I see it? Anything to do with the fact that I'm autistic?

I can see the difference if I click between the two, but I'd never really notice which it was if I walked into the room and a channel was already on. I don't miss HD if I'm watching normal!

OhYouBadBadKitten · 28/12/2015 23:10

I cant see it but I do have sight problems.

WhoTheFuckIsSimon · 28/12/2015 23:10

My iPad is doing the usual thing of refusing to paste anything. But if you google "can men see hd better" there is stuff about this. Apparantly it's a scientific fact that men see differently from women.

BertrandRussell · 28/12/2015 23:17

I can't- ds and dp can.
Coincidence? No idea!

muddymary · 28/12/2015 23:21

I can't see a difference (female) and I usually have good eyesight.

MetalMidget · 28/12/2015 23:23

I can see the difference. We stopped watching Doctor Who in HD because the slightly naff effects benefit from softer edges!

Clayhead · 28/12/2015 23:26

It's a massive difference!
I get irritated watching non HD now - just had my parents over for a few days and they just won't put the right channels on Confused

Mmmmcake123 · 28/12/2015 23:32

Tondelay, that is just so mean n nasty heh heh. Has had me chuckling tho. Well done hidden evil one!!!!

Mmmmcake123 · 28/12/2015 23:35

Agree that some shows such as Dr Who don't benefit from HD, nor grayscale where available, still v ropey, apparently part of the charm, but lost on me I'm afraid.

RealityCheque · 28/12/2015 23:39

Massive difference.

HD is a huge improvement over peasantvision SD

BlueMoonRising · 28/12/2015 23:41

Female, definitely a big difference. Mostly it doesn't bother me, but I love watching F1 in HD because you can really see the graining/the tyre wear SO much better!

19lottie82 · 28/12/2015 23:43

You can buy 4K TVs but you won't get to view 4K shows until TV providers launch the service, which hasn't happened yet!

I got Sky installed recently and the engineer was telling me BT will be the first to offer it in 2016......

howtorebuild · 28/12/2015 23:44

So what are the people who claim 4k is much better, watching?

Difference is huge- I avoid HD if I can, it's harsh!
Blurry standard tv is fine thanks. Also vinyl is making a comeback...

Some people have mentioned the unpleasant "hyperreal" effect - where the lighting looks off. The first time I saw movies on HD I was really puzzled - we were watching some Hollywood blockbuster but it looked weird, like it was Eastenders. I mean it looked sort of bizarre and video-ey and had the lighting I associate with a soap opera. My friend who had the TV just said it takes getting used to.

However, recently someone told me it's to do with the refresh rate of the screen and how it jives with the film speed or something. I Googled it and it sort of made sense. You can adjust the settings on the telly to put it back to "Hollywood" looking.

Archer26 · 28/12/2015 23:52

Oh this mirrors many an argument in the archer household.

DH flicking through endless channels to find its hd version so we miss beginning of program.

Me 'it makes nooooo difference' Angry

Flicky bastard

imwithspud · 28/12/2015 23:54

Female. I can definitely see a difference. Especially if I'm watching the ss version of a channel then switch to the HD version. Saw 4K in action in Curry's today and I can honestly say that it's something else. Our to is only 12months old though so it will be a while before we upgrade.

I don't watch a lot of tv but the picture quality really adds to my viewing experience.

BlueMoonRising · 28/12/2015 23:55

I was told that Amazon have some 4k shows in Prime. Not sure though...

missingmumxox · 28/12/2015 23:58

Let's be honest, there is a difference, only if you are a female like me you don't actually fucking care about it, so you say you can't see a difference because it doesn't actually matter to you...

I see a picture it tells a story end of, and and I am is fucking board to tears with people getting me to compare ..... Please make it stop...

RJnomore1 · 28/12/2015 23:59

The HD channels are definitely louder.

Roussette · 29/12/2015 00:00

We've just bought a new telly from JLewis and according to them there is no 4K at the moment so I've no idea how people are watching that!

HD is a massive difference, so prefer it to non HD. Maybe it's best on a bigger screen?

BillBrysonsBeard · 29/12/2015 00:05

Female and I can tell, but not bothered about having stuff in HD. People on HD iplayer looks so wrinkly and you can see every pore! Actually I like that as people look more real.

Russellgroupserf · 29/12/2015 01:13

It is clearer and interesting about the hyper realism, I'm not keen on it either.
