To wonder if anyone else 'can't see' HD?

A family member got a new 4k TV at Christmas and it sparked a discussion about whether there's a discernible difference between standard/HD/4k.

Almost all the female members of the family (3/4) say they 'can't see' any difference, but the men (5) can.

I am the odd one out, I'm female but find HD much clearer.

So I was intrigued as to whether there is a genuine division by male/female, or if it's coincidence and another family might find all the women can see it but not the men, or if it's because the women in my family don't really care about TV so aren't observing that closely?

And if there really is a male/female divide, why can I see it? Anything to do with the fact that I'm autistic?

I can't see the difference, but like MotherofFlagon's husband I can't see most 3D either.

seasidesally · 28/12/2015 22:40

im female cant see it,teen son can and cant understand how i cant

have to say dont take any interest in things like that

VegetablEsoup · 28/12/2015 22:40

I can only see the difference with my glasses on

Noofly · 28/12/2015 22:41

I can see a bit of a difference but not enough to get all excited about it the way DH does.

bettyberry · 28/12/2015 22:41

I notice the difference (but My work is in design/photography so maybe I'm trained to see the difference in it)

I don't need to watch regular TV shows in HD but an action/sci-fi movie is fabulous in HD.

The thing that gets my goat is not the lack of HD tv but people have the colour on the TV set all weird and it doesn't look right!

Mmmmcake123 · 28/12/2015 22:42

Female, I see the difference very clearly on most shows and really appreciate it. Dh doesn't usually bother switching to HD tho, drives me a tad mad as we have paid for it but I suppose he never asked for it, it was me that wanted it

WhoTheFuckIsSimon · 28/12/2015 22:43

Ive read that women struggle more to see it. I'm female and can't see it.

Vobble · 28/12/2015 22:43

Can't see the difference unless I sit in front of the tv. The problem is my eyes not the HD I fear! Dh can see a difference...

JohnLuther · 28/12/2015 22:45

Unless you have a 4K source for a 4K TV then you are not viewing true 4K content and there's not a lot of ways to view 4K content at the moment, Sky isn't even full HD for example.

I can see a massive difference between SD, HD an 4K.

Windingstreamswithoutends · 28/12/2015 22:47

Female and there's a big difference.

chickindude · 28/12/2015 22:47

Female, no can't see any difference....thought it was just me.

I don't really see it...

I have flicked between tv/hd channels when the tennis is on and you can see the ball a bit better, but mostly, unless you are watching on a giant tv I think it is mostly all a bit "emperor's new clothes"

We don't have a giant tv, I also don't really watch it...I tend to be pottering with something else with the tv on as well

Dh likes to record stuff in HD, but then to moan that it takes up ALL THE SPACE. I delete stuff when he is out.

mintoil · 28/12/2015 22:51

female - can't see any difference at all. It's all a big con Smile

HopeClearwater · 28/12/2015 22:51

It depends what you're watching and when it was made. Modern nature programmes (think David Attenborough stuff) look brilliant in HD. On the other hand, Mastermind close-ups of contestants are now even less pleasant than they used to be...

JohnLuther · 28/12/2015 22:53

TondelayaDellaVentamiglia what does DH say when you delete stuff that he's recorded? I wouldn't be impressed if my DW did that.

Ughnotagain · 28/12/2015 22:56

I think our TV is about 40". I can see a different between standard and HD.

And then 4K just makes my eyes hurt!

SixtyFootDoll · 28/12/2015 23:00

I can't tell the difference.
dh will flick between HD and SD shouting 'look!'
I don't get it?

Notso · 28/12/2015 23:02

I can't tell the difference on our TV, but I hate massive televisions so ours is only titchy.
I can tell on SILs TV but it looks a bit weird for most things we watch.
It's not something that really interests me.

TondelayaDellaVentamiglia · 28/12/2015 23:04

johnluther ....I tell him he watched it, I'm a very bad person.

ALTHOUGH I did not know until recently it just goes to a deleted menu, so if you really want to delete it then you have to delete it from there too.

He mostly blames SKY and rants about Rupert Murdoch.

Perniciousness · 28/12/2015 23:05

It's your eyesight that is the problem. The difference between HD and non HD is obvious on our TV. It's nothing to do with snobbyness it's just much clearer on HD.

Sport in HD on our tv is a huge improvement.

I'm a bit Shock that you think it might be a male/female thing

Shirkingfromhome · 28/12/2015 23:08

Great thread! This is an ongoing debate in our house. DH is adamant there's a huge difference ("you can see every blade of grass").

The only reason I know he has it on an HD channel is because the sound goes really quiet and I have to turn it up Confused

SevenOfNineTrue · 28/12/2015 23:08

I see a difference (female)
