To take down my christmas decorations?

moopymoodle · 27/12/2015 20:55

I've left the tree up, but removed thr window lights, ornaments etc. A few friends are calling me a humbug, I love christmas but started to feel a bit boxed in! DH agreed it feels more relaxing now :)

Anybody else done the same?

YANBU - ours went down today.. As a c. minder our house if often filled with little one's toys, we put tree up early December...It is nice to put the Lo's stuff in Garage while on holiday and now tree is down more space for DS new stuff to play with...

He was playing out today so much easier to tidy up while he isn't under my feet..I have left the outside decorations up though.

Sallystyle · 27/12/2015 21:46

Mine is only up because we can't be bothered to take down the tree.

We don't really decorate much though. We have an Xmas banner thing, a tree and lights on the wall. The lights are staying forever because I love them.

They will probably get taken down on Tuesday now as we have a busy day tomorrow.

GinandJag · 27/12/2015 21:50

We will take ours down on the 6th January.

Lolly86 · 27/12/2015 21:51

Took all our decorations down today

elQuintoConyo · 27/12/2015 21:59

We're taking ours down on the 7th. In-laws are coming for Christmas lunch (postponed because I got sick last week). Absolutely no one has visited us since we put everything up (19th) and I feel quite sad about it.

Our tree is small and in a corner, so not in the way. I'm always sad when it goes.

Bearbehind · 27/12/2015 22:02

Mine's gone today too.

I don't see the point in putting it up just before and taking it down well after Christmas.

I put my decorations up at the beginning of December and they come down straight after Christmas.

To me the fun of the lights/ decorations etc is the anticipation of Christmas Day, after the day has passed its just irritating clutter IMO.

QOD · 27/12/2015 22:04

I have a lot of large fun ornaments and have started carrying some up each time I go upstairs. Weds I will take it all down as I am back to work Tuesday and Thursday and it seems like it's all over

Palomb · 27/12/2015 22:06

I'll take mine down on Wednesday as its ds's birthday on Friday.

I have never been more depressed by a thread on here than I was by one I stumbled across on CHRISTMAS DAY by people whinging about how they couldn't wait to get their tree down and they hated the mess. It was a proper don't read it! moment. Some people!

FlatOnTheHill · 27/12/2015 22:06

So glad you posted this OP. I feel better now. I have removed everything except the tree. Feel terrible but to me once boxing day gone then they can go away in store room till next year. My mum thinks its terrible Blush

MirandaWest · 27/12/2015 22:09

Ours have been up since the first weekend in December and will be going down at the earliest the 6th of January and probably later as DP will be away and it will be nice to have the pretty lights still there and I can't move everything by myself. We see people after Christmas - would be horrible to visit and not have any Christmas decorations up

TwentyOneGuns · 27/12/2015 22:14

It would drive me bonkers to still have the decorations up in early January! We've got family over tomorrow so I've kept them up for now plus I couldn't be arsed to take them down today but I'd be surprised if they make it to New Year. I love putting them all up a week or 2 before Christmas but am always really glad to get back to normal once it's all over.

TimeToMuskUp · 27/12/2015 22:15

DS2's birthday is on 6th Jan and I always feel a bit funny leaving the decorations up til then, so tend to do them on new years day once I've recovered from my inevitable hangover so that he feels like there's a break between christmas and his birthday.

Ours go up the first weekend in December and it feels like they've been up forever this year. I'd get rid of them all now if we weren't having guests every day.

ghostyslovesheep · 27/12/2015 22:17

Ghosts mine went up 12 days ago - just to nudge your bubble a little

moopymoodle · 27/12/2015 22:17

Mine have been up since 22nd of November as we was on holiday early December so we really did get to enjoy them.

Next year il wait till around 10th December then I won't get so fed up with them!

It's always the over-excited types who put their decorations up early who can't wait to get them down again.

Have people not heard of living in the moment?

Traditionally, decorations should stay up until Twelfth Night (5th/6th January as Christmas Day is the first day).

On Mumsnet, it seems, people are desperately anxious to manufacture twee/sentimental family traditions, whilst being completely ignorant about the actual traditions of Christmas.

Blankiefan · 27/12/2015 22:29

I'm in the mood for taking mine down tomorrow but 2yo dd is away at her granny's overnight. I'd she comes back to a bare house - will she be traumatised forever? will we never get a night off again?

Bearbehind · 27/12/2015 22:30

Whether you like it or not m48294y, for a lot of people, Christmas isn't about the 'actual traditions'

WaitrosePigeon · 27/12/2015 22:31

Tomorrow!

megletthesecond · 27/12/2015 22:36

22nd November Xmas Shock . Give me strength and yabu.

Mine went up on 17th Dec and will come down on new years day. Want to get it packed away before I go back to work.

M48294Y · 27/12/2015 22:36

Evidently not, Bear Behind, from the absurd number of Mumsnet threads about where to get the largest amount of plastic tat for the least amount of money (I believe Poundland features quite often) starting in September.

FlatOnTheHill · 27/12/2015 22:44

M48294Y
Agree. Mine went up 1st December which is too early. Now im sick of them. Removed them today but left tree up. This is also wrong. And i also agree about the meaning of christmas is often overlooked. The correct tradition is the amount of nights they should remain up.

Womaloosh · 27/12/2015 22:44

I left home over 20 years ago, and I'm taking the tree down way for the first time...I'm aware of the traditions, but we're also free to have a personal preference...

scarlets · 27/12/2015 23:09

Our decorations go up on the 5th or thereabouts, and come down on around 30th. Christmas is well and truly over for me by then.

The decorations in Sandringham stay up until the Q leaves in February. Too much!

M48294Y · 27/12/2015 23:10

Yes, of course everyone is allowed to have a personal preference.

Of course they are.

ffs

However, we were asked aibu? This is aibu. I am saying yabu.

Is that actually ok or am I not allowed to disagree?

HoundoftheBaskervilles · 27/12/2015 23:15

12th NIGHT people, please, who puts their decorations up super early??? Christmas for me starts on Christmas Eve then goes for 12 nights of Bacchanalian feasting, it's the darkest time of the year, you need to keep it going.
